Kevin Bridge Picks Up Second Straight Championship at Sauble Speedway

Despite battling engines issues late in the year and a wreck mid-season, Kincardine's Kevin Bridge did everything that he needed to do to be crowned the 2017 Sauble Speedway Mini Stock Champion, marking his second straight track title.

“I can’t believe that it actually happened,” Bridge said. “It took five years to win the first one and then to go back-to-back is incredible.”

Entering the night, there was some understandable nerves as the team has been battling motor issues the past couple of weeks, having blown a pair of engines in two weeks. Though another wrench was thrown in the plans when Bridge was caught up in an incident in the heat, resulting in doubts about starting that night’s feature.

“When we went out and crashed on the third lap of the qualifier, I was almost heartbroken,” he said. “I thought the season was done. When I got out and surveyed the damage I was mentally going through the parts that I keep in the trailer and knew that we had everything to get it back together.”

The hard work paid off as the No. 17 Honda was back together for the feature. Bridge jumped out to the early lead and led a fair chunk of the feature, before dropping back to the runner-up position following a mid-race caution. The second, combined with three feature victories, was enough to clinch the championship, all while primary supporter LiUNA was sponsoring the night at the speedway.

While admitting that clinching the title on his sponsor’s night was huge, Bridge said the other big highlight of the year has to be the third win of 2017.

“It was the most fun that I had in a car in a long time racing with Jason Tolton and Craig Kamarath, (and) then having five of us cross the line all essentially under a blanket was amazing,” he said.

The two-time Sauble Speedway Champion may not be done racing this season, yet, with a possibility of running some of the year-end invitationals.

“I honestly don’t know where we will be,” he said. “I’ve got a hectic work schedule coming up with weekend and nights, and the Sauble Speedway banquet is the weekend of Frostoberfest. If there is a rain date or work frees up, then you may see us at the velocity weekend (Sunset Speedway) or Frostoberfest (Flamboro Speedway).”
