(December 10th, 2008) - On our spin through 2008, we come to the Wallace Equipment Hobby Stocks. This class includes six cylinder automatic race cars which have been dominated in recent years by Novas and Mustangs. Mark Wilson of Lantz would hope that fact stayed true as he would try to repeat as Hobby Stock titlist in 2008, but drivers such as Mike Alexander (Cole Harbour), Terry Moore (Shubenacadie) and the Slauenwhite's (Wade and Stu of Beaverbank) looked to challenge for the title.

The Hobbies shared the stage on opening night with the CARQUEST Maritime Pro Stock Tour and Alex Johnson (Enfield) took the checkered flag in the Heat and Main Feature on May 24th. Wilson and Alexander put their Mustangs into second and third by the end of the first night of the season.

Wilson and Alexander each advanced their positions by one the next week as Wilson led the #75 car across the line on May 30th. Terry Moore, sporting the new #40 Mercury in 2008 reeled off a third place run on Q104 Rock N Race Night.

It didn't take long for Alexander to parlay the third and second place finishes into a win as he powered his R&R Kinsman Mustang to victory on Wallace Equipment Night. Alexander led Bryan Watson (Windsor Junction) and Johnson to the line. Alexander would lead the points by six following this event.

Bryan Watson, who had missed the first race of the season, rebounded on AMP Energy Night to win his first event of 2008, backing up his second place run the week prior. Alexander chased Watson to the line to extend his points lead to seven points after four races, proving just how tough the competition is in the Wallace Equipment Hobby Stock division.

Alexander would be the first repeat Main Feature winner in 2008, collecting the win on June 27th. Alexander would extend his lead to ten points over the #14 car of Alex Johnson, who finished third on the night behind Alexander and Wilson.

Alexander made it a hat-trick the next week as he took his third victory of the season on Metro News Night. Brandon Watson (Windsor Junction) put his Floors Plus Ford into second, just ahead of the blue and yellow #40 of Terry Moore. Johnson finished ninth on the night, creating a 27-point advantage for Alexander after the sixth race of the season.

Things would turn sour for the #75 Mustang the next week as a problem onboard the Ford would relegate him to a last place finish in the Main Feature behind eventual winner Mark Wilson. Wilson bested Terry Moore and Johnson to take the win on Lockhart night, a night on which Alexander's points lead dwindled to a five point margin.

The rookie from Elmsdale would finally break into Victory Lane the next week as Gordon Ritchie put his Ritchie Renos #26 to the front of the field on Bargain Hunter Night. Ritchie outlasted Brandon Watson and Alexander to the line for his first victory. Ritchie closed the point gap to twenty three between himself and the rookie point leader Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood). Alexander still held a seven point advantage over the field as the Hobbies got to halfway in the season.

Speaking of rookies, Eric Neilson of Enfield would take his turn at parading the checkers the next week as he piloted his #25 to victory. Neilson also took the Heat win away on Z103 Night as he moved into eighth place in points. Alexander finished one position ahead of Johnson which closed him within two points of Alexander following the event.

Alexander showed again that he was the driver to beat in '08 by winning on Atlantic CAT 250 weekend, beating Bryan Watson and Eric Neilson on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Alexander extended his lead to twenty four points as he attempted to break away from the field as the drivers neared seasons end.

Wilson proved he wasn't going down without a fight as he kept his dream for his third Hobby title alive by winning on Canadian Forces Appreciation Night. Ritchie and Bryan Watson rounded out the podium on August 15th. Alexander's lead was extended to 39-points with only three events to go.

The rookies came back to the front on Kiddie Night as Ritchie bested Neilson once again. With that, Neilson took the rookie lead by 16 markers over Thibodeau, with Ritchie only nine points behind the #69 Ferguson Auto Parts car.

Alexander took wins number 5 and 6 to close out 2008 as he swept the last two events on the Wallace Equipment Hobby Stock division schedule. Alexander's final points tally was 62-points better than Terry Moore's, making the sophomore driver from Cole Harbour our 2008 Hobby Stock champ! Moore nipped Wilson by three points at season's end with Brandon Watson and Rookie of the Year Eric Neilson rounding out the top five in points.
