I am pretty sure that the #60 Corvair was previously a v8 powered Diamond class car that ran at Barrie in 1969-70. Same colours but it was numbered #260 (after the Sunoco gas) and driven by John Mason from Orillia.

Cool looking diecast. I think.I need to get a magnifying glass :)

I'm not sure where the Corvair body came from but the chasis is from the 57 Pontiac which is pictured above in my previous post. Both cars raced at Sunset on Wednesdays and Barrie on Saturdays in the late 60's early 70's. If you notice , I know it is hard to see, but the 57 Pontiac's number is 260. The Corvair is unsponsored in that picture. During that time I think there was some sort of dispute either with the track or between drivers and most guys ran unsponsored for part of the season.

P.S. I'm not sure what year the car was changed from the 57 Pontiac to the Corvair but the driver in the pictures is not John Mason.

I don't have a great pic of the 260 that John Mason drove, I think I have a better shot in an old Barrie program at home.

Here he is tangled at Barrie with the original Ridge Road hot shot, the late Terry Barr (Gordie's uncle? Something like that).

Another one of Big Bad John Mason after a flip at Barrie (and this would be a Ron Melson picture from the Glenn Watson collection :))

In 1970 Rookie Larry Stefnik drove a team Corvair to the 260 also sponsored by Mason's Sunoco and it was number 66. I don't recall making the connection before but Mark Donahue was running Roger Penske's #6 Sunoco Camaro in Trans Am at that time. Could be where Larry's #66 came from, Garf Peacock already had the #6 at Barrie.

Anyway the Sunset #60 Corvair triggered a childhood memory of that car and that I had always thought it had something to do with Mason's car given the same colours and number style.

I don't recall the 57 Pontiac at all but in those years of the Diamonds at Sunset I was mainly at Barrie selling programs for 35 cents each. I think I made 4 cents a program plus the occasional tip. We used to work the parking lots and be right there when they got out of their car. Then there would be kids at the gate and after the people arriving thinned out we would work the stands too. On Sundays after camping out at the track my brother and I would go crawling under the stands looking for money and stuff that had fallen from above the night before :)

That reminds me of another story of teaching him to drive on Sunday mornings in the empty parking lot at Barrie when I was 12 and he was 5. I'd work the pedals and let him steer sitting on my knees. No wonder he knows the quick way around now eh? :):):)

Anyone know when the 6 cyl class at Sunset was born? I first recall them in 1972 when my dad started selling them the 8 inch Hoosier recaps that were used in the Barrie Diamonds from 1970 on. They were certainly the forerunner of the Thunders of today, a support division that quite often put on the best show. Romping Ronnie Vellinga, Stomping Tom, Kerry Coburn, Grant Broome, Mike Visser, Doug Duncan, Ron Melson, Gord Graves were just a few of the stars from the early 6 Cylinder days and the class would live on at Barrie into the mid-80s.

I use and recommend Photobucket - free account and the space they give you is huge.  Upload to the account, copy the URL of the picture(s), then use the "insert image" button here (the one in the toolbar between the youtube and globe buttons) to post the picture URLs.
