Old Wheelspins News
« on: August 26, 2010, 08:07:24 PM »
Looking to buy or borrow copies of the Wheelspin News. Does anyone know the date of the first issue and the last issue. Also looking for Performance Racing News (PRN), Stock Car (News Journal), Inside Track, OMSA Racing News, Can-Am International racing news etc.  Also any old racing programs from tracks around Ontario.

Try Greg MacPherson @ Inside Track. He was associated with both Wheelspin News and PRN. He should be able to answer your questions.

I believe the last issue of Wheelspin was Vol.20, No.18. (September, 1984). It started publication in 1965. I think in the spring, but I don't know the exact date. Good luck.

I'm surprised that there isn't a Wheelspin News site that has old issues posted. That would be a great site.

Maybe copyright issues. I suppose Dean Murray's wife holds the rights to it.

The Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame talked about scanning the full run to CD. Never happened. Doubt it ever will. Those guys talk big but never get beyond the talking stage with most things.

Looking at Dean's obits, most of them say Wheelspin started in 1964. If that's true, it must have been late in '64. Before Wheelspin, Dizzy sold a tabloid called Internatinal Motorsport News. It was published by Carl Fredricksen of Hamburg, NY. That was the best source for Ontario racing news in the early sixties.

Wheelspin News had awesome coverage of racetracks and pretty well anything that had to do with racing, sure miss being able to read the latest in the racing world, too bad there wasn't someone to pick up after Dean Murray.I do think that Inside Track is doing a great job in reporting the news too.

Well if whomever (whoever  :P ) owns the rights put back issues from the 60's and 70's on CD I'd pony up for that! Imagine the awsome library of pictures they have from back in the day.

I donated about 50 issues of Wheelspin to a guy who said he represented The Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame around 2000. These were from 67-69 if I recall correctly. He told me I would get a tax receipt in the mail, I never did. I have no idea now where they ended up.  ???

That doesn't surprise me. It was kind of a sleazy organization. It is supposed to be a new organization under new management now but it seems to have some of the same people as before. I don't see any reason to think it is any better now. The people in charge are like a little private club with no connection to grassroots racing. They hired a guy as their executive director. It was a fulltime paid position, only they never paid him so he quit. Most people who have dealt with them in the past won't give them a dime. They got tired of the BS and the big plans that never happened. The new management's big idea is to find a way to get someone in government to give them tax dollars.

The Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame always sucked when it came to recognizing oval racers. Maybe what this country needs is an oval racing or stock car racing hall of fame. No BS about being a tax deductable charity or overpriced banquets, just recognition for great racers from around the country.

P.S. I would also pay for CD with backissues.

If the Canadian Motor Speedway actually becomes a reality then that would be a good place for it.

Also members here have tried to start a CRO version.

I know that there was a guy that used to be pretty active on the internet that had an awful lot of that stuff. As far as I know, he donated a vanload of old Wheelspins and PRNs to the Hall of Fame. I almost took them off his hands but the deal was I had to take all of it....and at the time I just didnt have any place to put it all.

And yes, for internet long-timers, is was "he that shall not be named"

I volunteered with the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame archives back in 2001 for the summer.  At that time, they were trying to organize all the memorabilia that was donated- programs, pictures, drivers helmets, suits, etc.  I did not come across many Wheelspin newspapers then, maybe they were still in boxes.  There was a ton of stuff that had to be looked at.  I came across lots of Road Racing items, but not much Stock Car programs or pictures.
The people running it had very good intentions but it was all volunteers with not alot of funding.  Everything was treated like gold so I'm sure the Wheelspin collection is still around.

I hope I didn't give the impression I was criticizing the volunteers at the CMHF. There are good people who have done good work. There were some good people on the board. Problem was, there were a few weasels on the board who did some really sleazy stuff. That stuff cost them volunteers and financial support. As I explained above, the new management may not be much better.

If anyone does CDs of Wheelspin, it won't be the CMHF. It couldn't pull it off. A few years ago, the archives sold CDs of Track & Traffic as a fundraiser. A lot of the CDs didn't work. People complained. They were ignored. They kept complaining. It looks like sometime this year they may all finally get working CDs.

Ed Moody, George Webster and some other guys are scanning magazines. Ed used to run the CMHF archives. The CMHF treated him really badly. They aren't scanning the magazines for profit, just to make them available to people who share their interest. They did the Canadian Motorsport Bulletin and they are working on Autosport Canada. They were road racing mags. After that, they want to do Wheelspin. It is a huge job. Hundreds of issues. Large format scanners are needed. If it gets done, it won't be this year. Whenever it gets done, something will be posted on CRO.
