Standing around a shop the other night where an acquaintance is restoring an early 70s Supermodified the conversation turned to discussing this car . I have only heard second hand stories about it and other then a few people that claim to have seen it after about 4 beers I really don't know much about it since I was living out of the country at the time .  I have been told they took it to Sandusky and had Tim Richmond test it and it was wicked fast and Oswego banned it before they even saw it but I thought you or your cousin might know the truth about this thing .

I posted this under Outlaw because although this might not be a WoO car its as outlaw as I have ever seen .

Yes the car was tested by Tim Richmond at Sandusky, I emailed Superdave in Ohio, I am sure he will have the car's full history which I will post later

Curious, what super from the 70’s is being restored?

Thanks very much Statsman . I searched for some info on the car but couldn't find a thing . Did you already have the info on this car or are you just one of the best data miners ever ?

,, and no its not that car being restored as it says in the article the car was cut up and scrapped , what a shame.

Pinecrest- You did your research into forgotten history,, In short you could get a part on CSI !!
I had only heard of the car and I never seen it run but the story goes that Richmond said the car was wicked fast and easy to drive, although a real tire burner on the right side. Just like the Tyrell in F1 that made its debut with the six wheel configuration (2 rear tires and 4 fronts) it was so way out in left field that F1 had no way to tech, judge or feel safe about running it.
The very same goes for the ASA car Mark Martin ran which was put together by Dillon Chassis using
only 3 springs and 4 shocks (LF, RF, LR and nothing on the RR), the car was very quick and did away with the problem at hand in those days which was RR tire wear.
All in all, this car is way out in left field when it comes to rule books and I am sure that is why we never get to see to many of these one of a kinds.

Just for the record- I feel Tim Richmond was the best Racer of all time and proved he could drive what ever was thrown at him. From Boats to Planes to Supers to Indy Cars to kicking ass right out of the box in NASCAR, Richmond had the talent to overcome any fear or doubt with a machines capability. If he would have learned to keep his boys in his pants I believe he could have gone onto challenge Dale Sr., or Petty in the record books not for the most chapionships but more for his ability to win and run in the top five.

Crazy car Pinecrest, and crazier yet- the brains that built such a car.
Who Say's R&D was not creative back in the 60's and 70's !!!!

I agree with you 100 % on Tim its a shame he left this world so soon . I saw the 3 spring Dillon car run several times and besides getting through the turns very well the Baker power it had at the time made it handle pretty good on the straits as well .

Since this is a Canadian site I thought I would post this pic of some Canadian ingenuity of the same era in Supers , This  is Guy Chartrands car from Quebec running at Oswego it was very very fast with that Hemi in it the cars nic name was the SideCuda

Very cool car Pinecrest and yes, idea's of the past were pretty ingenious.
I am not bias, but my cousin Doug did allot of R&D with the Supers and that is the reason he won so many races and Championships.
As A.J.Foyt once said- " There is no car that is to fast or to out of this world.
If its fast once it will be faster next time !!"

Good article on Harold Brown, and he is also one of my all time favorites, and still is today.
It does not matter how your day is going, good or bad, Harold always has a smile and a pat on the back for you. One of the very best of all time, past and current.
I have a photo album that I started when I was about 10 years old, and one of the photo's in the book is of Harold Brown in his #10 Blue and White Chevelle. I need to get it Autographed by Harold but I feel a little weird asking him now because I have more grey hair then he does.
The guy will always be a fan favorite and champion in my books.

I remembered seeing that pic on one of my geeky model car forums posted by someone who knows supers a lot better than I do, the only trick was digging through the archives to find the post. :)  I also agree with the comments about Richmond. I saw him win one for one of the last times at the Glen.

Here are a couple of other pics of Jean Guy Chartrand who also drove a pretty famous #69 modified for New York's Ed Cloce as well, the Hemi Cuda:

This looks like an earlier incarnation of the Cloce super, note the higher cage:

I love this shot of the car, definitely got a Hemi in it :)

Cloce was inducted into the New York State Stock Car Association hall of fame in November 2005, here's summary from that induction.

"Potsdam's Ed Cloce first fielded a car at Plattsburgh's Airborne Park Speedway in the early 1960's and soon rose to prominence as owner of the Jean Guy Chartrand driven Hemi-Cuda #69,with the big engine and unusual styling capturing the hearts of scores of fans. Chartrand, a steady winner at Airborne and Albany-Saratoga, later dominated the action at Owego's Shangri-La Speedway. His retirement brought a cast of all-star replacements, with such notable talents as Jimmy Shampine, Reggie Ruggiero, Chuck Ciprich, Jerry Cook, Mike Ewanitsko and Brian Ross filling the #69's seat over the years.

Major wins included Ross' triumph in the Race of Champions at Pocono, the Oswego Bud 200 with Shampine, a trio of Oswego titles with Ross and three second place finishes on the NASCAR modified tour with Ruggiero. Cloce remains active, fielding modifieds for son Tommy in NASCAR and Race of Champions events."

That Chevelle was a beauty as was the Camaro he ran after it. It was one of my favourite cars when I was a kid :)

This pic is from Cayuga.

I didn't get to see him run much but always rooted for him on infrequent visits to Cayuga or those Export "A" races.
