Kawartha Speedway 2012:  OSCAAR Teams Sign-in for Biederman Memorial

By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications

After a break in the schedule for the civic holiday long weekend, Kawartha Speedway gets rolling again Friday, August 10th with the first of 3 consecutive weeks of action.  The NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models, Thunder Cars, as well as the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks will be on the show.  Also on the bill is the 2012 edition of the Don Biederman Memorial for the OSCAAR Super Late Model teams.

The name Don Biederman is well known in Canadian asphalt racing circles.  Originally from Oakville, Ontario he is said to have paved the way for Canadians to compete in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.  An aggressive racer and car builder, Biederman was one of the sport’s original barnstormers, running whenever and wherever he could.  His most legendary battles came in head-to-head competition with Junior Hanley.  Biederman entered the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2001, a year after Hanley.  OSCAAR president Dave Gainforth says the series’ premier event appears to have found a home at the 3/8th mile Fraserville oval.

“With the casino, restaurant and enclosed grandstand, it’s the perfect location to hold our marquee show.  It’s a great place to bring sponsors and entertain special guests,” said Gainforth.  “We used to rotate the race between all of the venues on our annual schedule, but this will be our 3rd straight year at Kawartha.  The drivers love the place and they always put on a thrilling show when we run there.”

Georgetown, Ontario’s Jeff Hanley will take a 4 race winning streak into this year’s edition of the race that carries the name of his father’s rival.  Although he has made a limited number of starts this season, OSCAAR officials have confirmed he’ll be in the starting field August 10th.  While Hanley looks for another trip to the winner’s circle, Glenn Watson is looking for his first Biederman win.  After finishing second in championship points in 2006 – his rookie season – the Barrie, Ontario speedster reeled-off a string of 4 successive OSCAAR series crowns, beginning in 2008.  Despite his impressive accomplishments, Watson still wants a Don Biederman Memorial trophy for his display case.

“I had a good run going last year and pitted for some fresh rubber during a mid-race caution,” said Watson.  “I started at the back of the pack and had made it all the way up to second at the checkered flag.  I just ran out of laps at the end.  There are a number of people in our tour who can win that race, but I hope this year is my turn.”

Gates will open at 3:00 Friday, August 10th with rotating practice sessions for all divisions getting underway an hour later.  The night’s first green flag is at 7:00.

Kawartha klips:  To make-up for the cancellation of the June 1st season opener, Kawartha Speedway’s Thunder Cars will run a double points show Friday, August 17th.  NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model drivers will get the chance to pad their point totals at the Friday, August 24th event...At the start of the year, Kawartha Speedway and Capital City Speedway announced a Thunder Car challenge series.  In addition to regular race purse, drivers will run for a bonus payout of $250 for 1st, $150 for 2nd and $100 for every competitor.  The 50 lap events are Friday, August 24th at Kawartha and Saturday, September 8th at Capital City.  Registration by August 15th is required and drivers need to run both events to eligible for any bonus award...See the complete track schedule and the latest news at www.kawarthaspeedway.com.
