Biederman may have also won on the Friday night at Delaware in the Wheelspin News sponsored Late Model Series which would have been quite a Labour Day weekend for him.  Anyone remember?

Statsman...  are the Delaware and Cayuga stories in that same issue? I wish I had saved my 1977 issues! Earl Ross was the overall champion of the Series.

statsman car 61 64 chevelle?

I can never tell a 64 from a 65 unless I can see the bumper and grille but I think it is a 64.
thanks, i still own a 64 street stock that was run until 05, rolled on dirt, i think we will bring it back one more time in the colors that earnhardt won his first pavement race. i would send pics if i could figure out how.

I'm curious does anyone remember who was the champ in Sunset's top division in the tracks first year of operation in 68??? How bout the 69 & 70 track champs??? What was the top division called at the track back then?? As mentioned earlier in this topic Mr. Clean Doug Warnes was champ in 71. My question is: Did he win anymore titles either before or after that one??? I know Tom Milligan won the first track title after Pinecrest closed in the 77 season and if I'm not mistaken that was the start of 5 in a row he won back then. Anyone know for sure?? Any feedback as to old time Sunset champs would be appreciated!! I think we need to get this topic going a little more, so feel free to chime in on old Sunset stories or pics!!!! Thanks guys these Hall of Fame topics are great!!!

The first year Champ at Sunset was the #21 of Rick Batters and he may have won the second year as well .  The top class was Diamond cars and let me tell you the cars were rough compared to what we had at Pinecrest at the time . I only attended 1 race at Sunset the opening year but the one thing that stands out about the cars was the giant bumpers .

Batters did run Wasaga and South Shore but i dont think he ever won a title anywhere else .

Edit i will see if i can find a pic of his car .

I was born in 69 so would explain why the name didnt ring a bell!!!

Heres a pic of Rick at Wasaga in his B Bomb (six cylinder modified) around 1967 where he did win the points championship in this car . I think Rick still lives in the Barrie area . I think his mom (Dolly)who also raced this car in the Powder Puff division .

statsman... I also donated all my Wheelspin papers several years back, mine went to the Hall of Fame archives. Hopefully with the passing of Dizzy this week, they will use them in some sort of tribute. God bless his soul and family.

All I can say is wow! My grandparents built the race track, and I haven't seen half of these photos. However my mom has some good arial shots of when the pits we're on the other side, in corner 3-4. And she has a lot of Victory lane photos from the time she was Miss. Sunset...

Keep adding these..

Great old school pic PINEY!!!! Let me ask you a little about South Shore!!! Is that the same as Sutton Speedway???

Yes South Shore Speedway is Sutton . It was located about a mile west of Sutton on Baseline Rd . The grandstand was a hill with posts pounded into the ground with planks on it .  It was a paved 1/4 mile oval and probally the narrowest  track i have ever seen .

The pic that statman posted of Del Meeks car gives you an idea of what the bumpers were like at Sunset back then  but Del did not have the as big of bumpers as some of those guys ran .  Looking at that car of Dels that looks pretty rough its hard to believe that in just a few years and after he made the move to Pinecrest Del had some of the most professionally prepared and clean looking cars around .

Later on I'll try and get some pics up from 1998 - I have some scanned from the books. I know it's not as old as the stuff that you've talked about, but it would be kind of neat to look back to even that for some of us younger people ;)

Ok now that I've kinda got this picture thingy worked out...lets get the ball rolling again ;D

This is from Sunset in '68 or '69. From what I understand this car, a '57 Pontiac called the Pony Express, with a 302 Z in it I think, was a track champ one of those years.

This is Sunset in '72 or '73 a '64 Corvair in the 6 cylinder class. Love that "soft wall" they had then   ::)

Here is a diecast I made of the same car ;D

I am pretty sure that the #60 Corvair was previously a v8 powered Diamond class car that ran at Barrie in 1969-70. Same colours but it was numbered #260 (after the Sunoco gas) and driven by John Mason from Orillia.

Cool looking diecast. I think.I need to get a magnifying glass :)
