Babin and Mulders Team-Up to Chase 2015 OMRS Rookie of the Year Award
By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media
Racing’s most common goal is to do better than the other cars on the track. Occasionally, drivers will have a teammate who they’ll help get toward the front on the pack, but for the most part its one competitor against the other and only the strong survive. With the start of the 2015 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – schedule just a couple of weeks away, good friends Ryan Babin and Christopher Mulders will break from tradition and share the same ride during their inaugural season with the popular open wheeled division.
With a rich Peterborough Speedway history, the pair is ready to head into battle with their new piece. 24 year-old Babin, from Oshawa won the Mini Stock track championship in 2014, finished 3rd in points and claimed the Autumn Colours Classic checkered flag a year earlier. Mulders, a 25 year old from Bowmanville finished 12th in last year’s Mini Stock standings, 2nd in the Mini Stock points and 4th in the 2013 Super Bowl of Stock Car racing and was runner-up in the 4Fun Autumn Colours order for 2012, after earning the track title. Their equipment – a former Darren Kearnan ride – scored multiple wins in OMRS events at the former Mosport/Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Speedway oval. Babin says there is only one piece missing in the puzzle.
“Neither Chris or I have ever turned a lap at Flamboro,” admitted Babin with a nervous chuckle. “We’re looking to acquire as much knowledge as possible throughout the year and that includes adjusting to a new track. We’ll be splitting the schedule right down the middle, so hopefully that will help us accelerate the learning curve as much as possible when it comes come figuring out the new car and different venue.”
For their inaugural OMRS season, the duo of Ryan Babin and Christopher Mulders will be backed by Roy Nichols Chevrolet, N.A.S.C. Hockey, M.R. Automotive, Cooper Fuels, Link Greenhouses, ATD Automotive, Action Promotions and CN Produce.
Since its inception, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – has been committed to providing a competitive, affordable series for racers, by racers. Officials have worked hard to offer a manageable schedule of events for all teams, while giving sponsors a strong brand and providing a great show for the fans whenever and wherever they race. In addition to the Babin/Mulders partnership, drivers competing for the 2015 OMRS Rookie of the Year award include Willow Barberstock, Donny Beatty and Jamie Wagar.
