MACEDO AND THORNE TAKE WINS AT CANADIAN SPRINT CAR NATIONALS

By Tommy Goudge (September 16, 2017) Ohsweken, Ontario - 80 drivers signed in to race at the 13th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals presented by Arrow Express on Saturday. Carson Macedo and Mike Thorne visited Lucas Oil Victory Lane.

Sam Hafertepe, Jr. and Carson Macedo appeared set to decide who would win the 13th edition of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals between themselves, but Jordan Thomas did more than just keep the two stars honest; Thomas took the runner-up spot away from Hafertepe with three laps to go in the 35 lap feature, and tried to run Macedo down for the win. Macedo was not to be denied though, and became the first Californian to win the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, while Thomas settled for the runner-up spot, and Hafertepe held on to finish third. Ryan Susice moved up steadily to finish fourth, while a late charge moved Dylan Westbrook from eighth to fifth during the last two laps.

Hafertepe took the early lead with Macedo in tow, but the race slowed after just three laps when Jonathan Preston, Dain Naida, and Bryan Howland were caught in a jingle. Naida was able to keep rolling and Howland restarted the race at the tail, but Preston's car suffered damage which ended his race. Double-file restarts were new to the Nationals in 2017, and the new wrinkle made things interesting when the green flag flew again with 32 laps left. Shawn Donath attempted to get past Macedo and Hafertepe on this restart, but the two front row starters were able to break away again.

The leaders encountered traffic with ten laps complete, and Macedo made small gains on the leader as Hafertepe tried to get through the congestion. Before the traffic could play a larger role, the race was stopped when Dain Naida crashed hard in the first turn; Fortunately Naida was able to climb uninjured from his heavily-damaged machine. Macedo and Donath used the ensuing double-file restart to make runs at Hafertepe's lead, and those three briefly raced three-wide out of turn two. Macedo was able to steal the lead, but Hafertepe fought back to retake the top spot on lap 16. Jordan Thomas also made his move into the top three during this stint, passing Dustin Daggett and Shawn Donath in quick succession.

Hafertepe, Macedo, and Thomas began to encounter traffic again as the race reached the halfway point. The top three drivers were very close together with ten laps left, while Jared Horstman was making gains on them until briefly slipping off the edge of the track. Hafertepe doggedly continued to hold the lead despite a partially deflated right rear tire, but a brief pocket of open track allowed Macedo a chance to make the winning move in the bottom groove with six laps remaining. Thomas was subsequently able to pin Hafertepe behind a lapped car and take the second spot, but Macedo threaded his way through traffic and locked down the $12,000 USD win.

"For awhile there I couldn't decide what I was going to do," Macedo noted after the race. "I got my wing back a little bit and got settled down and got patient. Sam's a hell of a racer and just to compete with him at this level is pretty awesome."

While the win was Macedo's first at Ohsweken, it was far from the first one for the Joe Gaerte Racing team; Shane Stewart drove the #3g to three CSCN victories before moving on to the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series with Larson/Marks Racing.

"This 3g team is awesome," Macedo exclaimed. "These guys - Tim Norman, Cindy Norman, Joe Gaerte[...]this car is always fast and I'm just the lucky guy who gets to drive it. (Ohsweken Speedway) is awesome. If I could race here all the time, I definitely would. I do this for a living so I travel around and I get to race at a lot of places and have a lot of fun, so that's what it's all about. Thanks to these fans for coming out. This place is awesome and I can't wait to come back."

Despite finishing second, Jordan Thomas was ecstatic with his team's results over the weekend.

"This is a win for us, and I'm at a loss for words," Thomas revealed. "Beating the best in the business with Hafertepe behind us second to Maceo, it's...I'm at a loss for words."

Hafertepe wasn't quite so happy with third, but the 2011 CSCN winner was philosophical after the race.

"Hat's off to Carson - he drove a really good race," Hafertepe observed. "We fought a little bleeder issue there right before the A (feature) started and we thought we had it fixed, and then just later in the race we had about nine pounds there in the right rear. With the track condition that it was, we weren't going to get it done like that. I felt like we had the car to beat and flexed a lot of strength all weekend long, but Carson's a good racer and we raced real hard and clean and he deserved to win tonight."

NOTES:
-66 cars filed pre-entries for the 13th edition of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, with 58 officially competing on Saturday night. Engine problems and crashes on Thursday and Friday kept a number of drivers out of competition on Saturday; The most notable absence was that of three-time CSCN winner Steve Poirier, who suffered a back injury in a crash during the Night Before the Nationals event on Friday.
-Also absent from competition on Saturday were long-time CSCN competitors Glenn Styres and Rick Wilson. Styres is still feeling the effects of a crash earlier in the summer, while Wilson was in attendance as a crew member. Wilson had attempted to qualify for all 12 previous editions of the Nationals, but was unable to bring his car and race team this year. While he did participate in time trials, Jared Zimbardi is also recovering from a recent crash and scratched from the remainder of the evening.
-Bryan Howland and Dain Naida both looked to finish their Sprint Car careers on high notes, but neither were able to finish. Howland's night ended with engine problems on lap five, while Naida brought out the red flag with a hard crash on lap 12.
-Drivers from two Canadian provinces and eight American states attempted to qualify for the 13th edition of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
-Nine drivers competed in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals for the first time, including Davie Franek who earned the Fine Touch Collision Rookie of the Nationals Award.
-Sam Hafertepe Jr. collected the Grisdale Racing Products Fastest Qualifier Award, while Steve Lyons claimed the Inside Track Motorsport News Fastest Canadian Qualifier award.
-Davie Franek started 26th and finished 11th in the A-Feature to claim the Grisdale Racing Products Hard Charger Award.
-Ryan Ruhl and his team were chosen for Corr/Pak Merchandising “Bill Peer Memorial” Best Appearing Car Award honours.
-Ryan Coniam's #5w team was awarded the Travis Rutz Long Tow Award presented by Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel. Originally from Burlington, Ontario, Coniam now resides in Colorado, while his car and race team are based in North Carolina.
-George Suprick and Yan Bilodeau split the Eagle Chassis bonus from Mike Emhof Motorsports.
-Coleman Gulick and Jeff Cook earned Mach 1 Chassis bonuses, while Gulick also received a bonus for driving the highest-finishing Mach 1 Chassis.
-The highest-finishing drivers from each of the six official CSCN affiliate sanctions earned bonus prize money, including Paul Kinney (Empire Super Sprints), Jared Horstman (Great Lakes Super Sprints), Dustin Daggett (National Racing Alliance), Dylan Westbrook (Ohsweken Speedway 360 Sprint Cars), Jordan Thomas (Patriot Sprint Tour), and Shawn Sliter (Southern Ontario Sprints).

Although the boxscore shows Mike Thorne leading all but one of the 20 laps in the Crate Sprint Car feature, the win did not come easily to the former Thunder Stock champ. Thorne fought off challenges from several drivers to claim the second Crate Sprint Car feature win of his career. Polesitter Eric McGlone led the first lap and raced side-by-side with Thorne several times through the first half of the final Crate Sprint Car feature of the season.

The first yellow flag of the race flew on the third lap, as Aaron Turkey and Brian Nanticoke crashed in turn one; Both were uninjured, but Turkey's car was damaged too much to continue. Thorne and McGlone continued their race for the lead after the race restarted, while a good race also developed for the third spot between Jesse Costa and Jerry Hill. McGlone was again wheel-to-wheel with Thorne at the halfway signal, but Thorne used traffic to slip away while Costa and DeMan moved into second and third. With five laps left, Costa looked ready to pounce on Thorne until a collision between Hannah Ferrell and Josh Hansen brought out a yellow flag.

Costa was unable to get back into his rhythm after the race restarted and gave up the second spot to DeMan, but Thorne thwarted DeMan's plans for last-lap heroics by diving low in the third turn. DeMan settled for the runner-up position in his final race for the Barr Motorsports team, while Costa held onto third. McGlone and Holly Porter rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Mike Thorne, Eric McGlone, and Shone Evans.

"On that restart I saw (DeMan) was in third," Thorne noted. "I wanted to get a good restart...I saw him out of the corner of my eye down in (turn) one and wanted to make sure I covered the bottom down (in turn three) - It worked out good!"

Despite the runner-up finish, DeMan leaves the Crate Sprint Cars as the division's all-time feature win leader. The standout driver on both dirt and pavement will take his talents to the 360 Sprint Car division next season.

"I can't say enough about this track, the facility, the safety crew, the friendliness," DeMan exclaimed. "I came from asphalt and I didn't know anybody here. Everybody was so welcoming and I've had so much fun. All the competitors in this Crate division are top notch. I've had a lot of fun in this division and I can't wait to go 360!"

Although he had a chance to win, Costa was happy to get on the podium after some bad luck earlier in the season.

"We're really pleased," declared Costa. "With the way the year started off, we've been running pretty good now at the end of the year, so we're looking forward to next year now."
