Title: Jackson still dominant at Kawartha
Post by: slapdown on June 21, 2008, 12:26:38 AM
Larry Jackson is again the man to beat at Kawartha Speedway. Jackson took the checkers in tonights 100 lap feature but he was pressed hard by Dan McHattie. Jackson was at the front from the drop of the green but McHattie challenged him hard several times, including numerous side by side battles. McHattie was able to take the lead at one point but a flat tire mid-way thru the event put him pitside. McHattie charged thru the pack like he was shot out of a cannon and by lap 70 was again challenging Jackson for the lead. He again took the lead on a restart but Jackson took the point for good around the 75 lap mark. Bryan Mercer also made a great recovery from a flat tire to finish 5th. Dave Morgan has rebounded form a tough 2007 and finished 4th and young gun Brandon Watson shook the early season monkey off his back and finished 3rd. Also on hand driving a Brian Cathcart LM was Pete Shepherd III. Unfortunately he broke in the heats, as did Darrin Thring and Norm Mayhew. None of them were able to make the feature so only 21 of the 24 cars on hand took green. Some of the Capital City cars also made the trip. Winners in the other classes were LLM Vic Parsons and Mini 27 Mike Wallace. Sorry didn't see the Thunder winner but I'll guess either Mayhew od Rhynes. It looks like Lynch's decision to go to ACT rules 4 years ago is starting to pay off. 18 cars first night and 24 tonite ( all 18 from night 1 returned ). Also was a nice gesture to give free pit passes and gift certificates to the minis for having to call there race due to curfew on opening night. He also gave them 40 laps to boot.

For those of you that are interested the LM on hand were

84 Jackson, 71 McHattie, 9 Watson, 10 Morgan, 81 Mercer, 99 Brown, 31 MacPherson(CCS), 2 Baird(CCS), 01 Kimmerly, 29 Smith, 55 Thring, 13 Shepherd III, 60 Mayhew, 16 Kimball, 00 Munro(CCS), 7 Sinopoli, 88 Mitchell, 5 Maroney, 85 Powell, 77 Fernandez, 72 Peterson, 07 Baker, 17 Holtom and 10 Kirby.

Another great night at the Downs. If you want to see some incredible racing KD is the place. The fight between Jackson and McHattie is worth the price of admission. Really looking forward to ACT in 3 weeks.

McHattie COULD have won the 100 lapper if he'd have stayed on the outside as he was faster but he doesn't like it out there and a couple of times young Brandon Watson would have got the # 71 if he hadn't made his usual dive for the inside ......................... way to go Jackson "you rule Kawartha  in my books" !

What happened to Holtom and Kirby?  Did the crash or break?  or did they just not have their cars set up right?   Good to see a bunch of CCS cars made the trip.  Hopefully a bunch of KAwartha cars make the trip to CCS on June 28!

The Thunder winner was 77b Brian Strone (not sure about the spelling).  Definitely a great show put on by the late models tonight.  The other classes were also up for the challenge as there were numerous battles in each division.

Anyone know why Shannon is only running her mini at Kawartha and only running LLM at Mosport?  She definitely had a tough break in the semi feature.

I don't know if Kawartha guys check this, but just wondering how many are thinking of making the trip?

I'm out in the Ottawa area next weekend anyway and am planning on going, be nice if there is a big field of late models

Why wouldn't the # 71 , # 99 etc. go to CCS ? It's a series for points and cars should go ....... I can't understand what's wrong with these drivers, this is what's wrong with racing these days too many tracks and no 1 wants to go try anywhere else ............. yrs' ago you went wherever there was a SPECIAL !
I have to say that Tom Walters & Vic Parsons know what racing is all about and move around to race !

Nascar329 also how many laps do you want the 71 on the outside 71 laps because he was on the outside forever.I guess you must be a Jackson lover as you didn't say anything about him going to CCS.Think before you speak and no i'm not a 71 lover.

I couldn't agree with you more on this one nascar , these 2 guys have raced at almost every track in ontario over their long careers and picked up an awfull lot of of followers that go to watch each of them race each and every week whereever they may be racing.I can tell you one thing , if it doesn't rain tonight , me and the gang are heading to sunset to watch 2 of the best go at it .

Bottom line is 90% of drivers don't traval as much as it comes down to time and money.Sorry but can,t stand when fans jump all over driver's when they don't know what the drivers story is.But I will say I don't understand why the 71 doesn't travel as I believe he has the time and money ,but hey I don't know his whole deal? And no I won't be going down to CCS as I have prior commitments. When I said a 3 hour drive to CCS ,I meant long haul for alot of racer's that don't have a chance a even a top 15.As for me I'm willing to drive anywhere.

I was there at Kawartha and I must say that that was some of the best racing up front in the late models I have seen in a long time.  They gave each other room and just went hard at it.  71 and 84 just seemed to have more power than the 9 car did.  I know they are all crates but it was just the way it looked.  I think the 71 ran out of tires running the outside lane so hard and so long.  Just good clean hard racing.  Fun to watch.

How was Ken Baird (#2) with his Kenyon-chassisdynamic chassis for this first appearance there?  We know that last week at Ottawa he won everything, the 2 heats and the feature.

Looks like in the first post he was 8th behind spencer mcpherson but in the kawartha article on the ccs website it says he was the top ccs finisher in 6th. Maybe the 6th is total points for the night as he won a heat race. Article says he and Munro got together in the feature and brought out a yellow.

Just to clarify. My entry list at the beginning of the thread was not necesaarily the finishing order. Hard to get that while spotting. Ken did run pretty well considering it was his first visit. I think.

was in perterborough area this weekend and went to the 100 lap lm invitational and was impressed with Brandon. He went to the outside when he couldn't get a hole in the inside. reminded me of Steve Munro. Hope he comes back to ottawa for the aug 10th race.
