Danica Upset With Rule Change
By NATE RYAN,USA Today
Posted: 2008-03-25 12:16:37
An Indy Racing League rule change has Danica Patrick feeling as if she'll be penalized for being petite - which the popular driver said wouldn't happen in other sports.

Starting this season, the minimum weight for IRL cars will include the driver, and Patrick is the series' lightest at 100 pounds according to the 2007 media guide (which lists other female drivers Milka Duno and Sarah Fisher at 120 pounds apiece; Ed Carpenter is the heaviest at 165).

"If someone's going to take the hit it's going to be me," Patrick said Thursday. "It's disappointing the league decided to do that. In so many other sports, athletes don't get penalized for being too strong, or too tall or too fast.

"(It's) just your God-given stature is being penalized. What am I going to do, though? It's not my decision. That's the people higher up (who) made their bed, and they've got to lay in it."

Patrick said she asked IRL officials about the reason for the change but said "they didn't really have one.

"I just follow the rules," she said. "Maybe I'll get more specific reasons somewhere down the line --"

IRL spokesman John Griffin said the rule was intended to reduce the difference between the lightest and heaviest drivers, which is a gap that can range from 75 to 100 pounds.

"We want to make absolutely clear this is not a Danica rule," Griffin said. "You look at guys like Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti, and they're light guys."

Griffin wouldn't disclose the cars' minimum weight but said drivers are broken into three weight classifications. The heaviest would have weight reduced from its car while the lightest would have a maximum 35 pounds of ballast added.

"It's something that had been looked at and was in the back of our minds every year," Griffin said.

Every professional racing series has had a car weight + driver formula except the IRL and its high time they leveled the playing field . To put it in perspective her weight advantage would be equal to over 160 lbs in NASCAR
Somehow Danica sees this as a rule against her which it is not . Last year when the IRL let her put power steering on the car because those little chicken wings she calls arms were getting tired during the race she thought that was just fine . Hey Danica just shut up and drive .

Girls shouldn't even be allowed to race with the men IMO they should still be in the Powder Puff division .

That the cars weigh equal only makes sense...........
I think she brings some recognition to racing, and I find her attractive myself, but I dont think she is suited for the type of pic you have shown at all. She is starting to remind me of that tennis player.....

All all this woman negativity.........
Pinecrest....did you not get breast fed as a child? LOL.

WOW!!!! If Danica needs a shoulder to cry on she should dial 1-800 blkflagagain!!!LOL But really I would cut off my left one and change my CRO name to ONEBALLPAUL for a evening alone with her!!!LOL Have to disagree with you though PINEY I feel a woman has every bit as much of a right to drive a race car as a man!! Take drivers such as Amanda Conolly, Anna Milligan or Paitra or Tia in the Charger division they sure dont look outta place driving in their particular classes. But agree DANICA always seems to think shes been descriminated upon and I'm also sure she knew this was perdominantely a male orientated sport when she entered it so when it comes to that I have to agree with you that she should just shut her pie hole and race.

Was she weighed in the FHM outfit or the race out fit that could make a difference  ???  :o

I agree with every word Pinecrest said, up until just below the picture. Does anyone here race in a division that weighs the cars without the driver? I'm willing to bet probably not. It's not an anti-Danica rule, its a this-makes-more-sense rule. She's not being penalized for being petite. Before, every other driver was being penalized for being average sized.

She still has an advantage, because she can put that extra lead anywhere she wants in her car.

Good point regarding weight placement.

I was also thinking ...

I do not follow IRL, and don't know the drivers well enough to cite one of them, however, Jeff Gordon walked past us in Daytona this speedweeks.  I can't imagine Danica would weigh any more than him. ;)  I'm sure there are other IRL (male) drivers who will be affected by this rule change.

I remember quite a few years ago, I was reading an article where Jimmy Spencer was complaining about the advantage drivers like Gordon had because of their weight, and before long, NASCAR started adding in the driver's weight. I wonder where in those IRL cars you would put extra ballast?

I believe the IRL will dictate where the weight has to be added to the monocoque , and yes even Danica has a monocoque .

As for those who did not care for my comment that women should have their own division , why not they do in almost every other sport ?

  This is a real Racer
