Cayuga Speedway going strong

The tradition continues at Cayuga Motor Speedway where Dale Earnhart once sped through the turns.

The goal is to continue as a premium racing facility, owner Jerry Santucci told council on Feb. 9.

"Our goal is to make Haldimand County the racing capital of Ontario," he announced.

By offering events with various sanctions, the Nelles Corner oval course will not compete the fan base enjoying other local tracks, he added. With the recession, race fans are supporting their local facilities and the Speedway is an alternative where prices are affordable for families, says Santucci.

This summer the Speedway will host six race weekends.

The highlight of the season will be the late August NASCAR Legends with Rusty Wallace and friends.

In January, track publicity and promotion manager Kevin Davis said Kenny Wallace, Jimmy Spencer, Michael Waltrip and Matt Kenseth are signed up for the Aug. 22 and 23 event and four others are expected to join them on the 5/8 mile track.

Santucci also told council that the Speedway has some expansion plans and will be transparent and working with council on them prior to implementation. In response, Coun. Tony Dalimonte said the community appreciated openness and is excited about what has been done so far under new owners.

"(The Speedway) has a great reputation and we're going to do everything we can to enhance it," replied Santucci.

It's not only the first line that bothers me, it's the first three lines.

"Premium racing facility" c'mon, the last time I was there I swear, there was grass growing in the cracks of the asphalt!! Granted, that was a few years ago, and from what i hear, not much has changed.

Haldimand county, the racing capital of Ontario?  Really, how does having 6 weekends of racing in one year allow someone to say that?

Don't get me wrong here, Cayuga is a wonderful place to run, the both times we ran there in the past, we had a blast.  This article though, is a little much.

Just my opinion.

Back in Cayuga's glory days, they ran less than 6 weekends. Food for thought. Personallyy, I like the way things are sounding and am cautiously optomistic that great things can happen. I just like the fact that council is talking to them

They pulled the grass out and now there are 6" deep cracks  ;)

You would think they could at least take the time to update their website.

If you don't know that Cayugas glory days were when they ran every Friday night under Bob Slack i have a hard time taking what you say seriously . Put me down with longstreet and racer43 on the rest of it .

First time i saw cayuga was last may,  i have to say it bleeds  heritage  and it is wicked fast. The bump up off of four is as intense as any track i have seen.  Other than the light issue  in the second race,  the place is great.I  think what we all have to do is have faith in the future,  buy into this season and enjoy it. It is going to be very difficult for tracks ,teams and fans to get through this season,  lets help each other out and support wherever you can.  Forget the past,  we cant change it. see you all at cayuga in may!!!   jason white   #21  NCTS

Jason, I used to always go and camp for the big races. All my friends will agree with me, that camping at Cayuga was the best! Hydro & water for $10.00 a night then last year, it was free. I remember another track charging $10.00 for dry camping at the time. They always had something going on in the pavilion out back too! I just forget how many acres they have out back, I think it's 300 or something??? Anyway, we alway's enjoyed ourselves there and racing was always 2'nd to none.

And back when they had the Shootout, they packed the place again! I'm hoping it happens again this year.

Season is upon us, no schedule, no ticket sales, and the fans are restless...

What do we think, is the strong season now officially DEAD??
