South Buxton
« on: July 16, 2007, 04:13:03 PM »
Talked my wife into attending the SOS sprints last Saturday night at South Buxton.  Only our 2nd time at a dirt track in 28 years.  I was very impressed with the upgrades to the track, they need a little more lighting, and some spectator upgrades, namely washrooms.

Track was in fabulous shape.

Heat races and pursuits were top notch.

Feature race for the sportsmen was excellent

feature for the sprints was a little drawn out for my wife's taste, I expected a sprint car show to drag so I was prepared for it.

feature for the late models dragged and we ended up leaving at 10:45, I assume that the locals are okay with the late timing (realizing that they lost about 45 minutes right at the top of the show to rerun in the track due to a Little shower) we however facing an hour and 15 minute drive left early.

The bottom line --- definitely will be going back for a regular show and for the next sprint show.

It's a decent show out there....From what I hear, it could be a TON better, but still, it's a good time...

Back to South buxton for the third week in a row.  My wife is really liking the dirt shows ( I had forgotten that we had already switched from dirt to pavement by the time I met her and that she never experience the dirt shows of the early seventies)

HOWEVER the show dragged, a couple of big wrecks in the sprint feature pushe the start of the second last feature to 10:50 and we left, my wife was not to thrilled to miss the modifieds feature ........... so bottom line we will look at some other shows.

Hello Srama re Buxton I was at Buxton Saturday also stayed for the whole show and it finished up at 11:15 . I talked to a couple of regulars and this year there shows are finishing up at approx 10:30 .That show would have finished up at approx 10:30
if there had not been 3 red flags ( Sprints ) and approx 20-25 minute intermission to roll the track. Noticed on there schelude Sprints on Dirt are there Last Saturday in August.Fans told me to the show to come to is the last show of the year end of September they call it the Late Model Challenge where they expect a big field of Late Models. If you have not seen Late Model cars on Dirt you have to see it

I've always liked Buxton. Haven't gotten there yet this year, but I know last year they were really getting a handle on keeping things moving. Selfishly, I liked the way that (last year anyway) they ran the Sport Stock and LM features first, that way if the mods and minis went late, you could leave feeling you'd gotten your money's worth. I tend to think SS and LM are their best show....assuming a regular nights racing. (Nothing against the minis or mods...just that the mods seem to take forever to finish a feature whenever I see them.)

My only three beefs with Buxton
-Yeah, the washrooms are kinda non-lady friendly.
-their announcing (in past years) has been pretty hit and miss.
-their program needs work with regards to letting he fans know who the drivers are and where they come from. That comes back the the announcing, and the fact that the best written thing I've ever seen is a slip telling you who the top 10 in points is...no hometowns or anything.  Most of the info that I actually DO pick up has usually come from the nearest regular that I'm sitting near.

Othewise, Buxtons a great show!

It also has the honor of being the place where I saw the freakiest crash I ever personally witnessed. The LM guy on the outside pole in a heat race comes roaring to the start line, makes contact with the guy beside him...rides the front fence, goes off the end of the turn 1 pit exit, and goes barrel rolling right thru the middle of the pit area. They needed a fire truck and a can opener to get the guy out after about an hour's work. And this was the first race of the evening!

Anyway, cant speak for the sprint shows, but if you can get there for a big LM race, don't miss it.

Buxton raced last night 20 car late model feature great race cars were turning times of 16.30 Sec (Kirk Hooker ) 15.60  (Andrew Reaume). Hooker raced  last night after taking  a big crash with his late model on Friday at Delaware. Word is that car was totaled and he is hoping to have a new car for the labour Day show at Delaware. As for rumours that the track has been sold is just rumours but again anything is possible. Anybody looking for a great show Buxton is having a Sprint Show ( SOD) plus Sport Stock field 20 Lap feature, Comp4 feature 15 Laps and Late Models (25 Lap feature next Saturday night (Aug.25 th )
P.S. Hookers big accident from Friday night can be seen on You Tube
