Trendell and Atkinson Split Twin 20 Features For Canadian Vintage Modifieds at Flamboro

By Clayton Johns

MILGROVE, Ont. – July 30, 2016 – The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds returned to action following a week off to recharge on July 30 at Flamboro Speedway for a pair of 20-lap features. The ninth event of the club’s 50th anniversary season was also the fourth visit of the season to Flamboro.

Brian Atkinson and Daryl Henwood brought the field to the green flag for the first feature event after Amanda Stoner and John Karley elected to start at the rear. Atkinson took advantage of the pole starting position and jumped to an early lead ahead of Mike Podd’s No.5 and championship point leader Jason Keen.

The race was slowed on lap three when Cassidy March spun to a stop in turn four, but he refired the car to rejoin the tail of the field. Atkinson held the point on the restart, but this time Keen advanced to second with Trendell in tow. The top three drivers separated from the rest of the pack and set a lightning quick pace while running bumper to bumper. Atkinson maintained his line around the bottom and held off Keen and Trendell for the victory. Daryl Henwood and Karley completed the top-five.

The final 20-lap event saw Stoner take the pole position with Henwood lining up outside the front row. Henwood gained the upper hand at the drop of the green flag while Keen quickly darted to second with Trendell in third.

Disaster struck early for Henwood when the power plant expired on his No.29 in turn three. The No.29 drifted to the outside wall while Keen and Trendell had nowhere to go. Keen made contact and cut a brake line in the incident. Trendell came to a stop, but avoided incident and assumed the lead for the restart.

Trendell was flawless following the return to green and cruised to his fourth feature win of the season, holding off Atkinson and Podd in the process. Karley and March rounded out the top-five finishers.

Adam Misener’s No.33 and Ron Easton’s No.00 suffered mechanical problems during the afternoon practice sessions and were unable to race for the remainder of the night. Bob Gilbert rolled in No.03 to a stop during the pace laps for the first 20-lap feature and could not continue. Noticeably absent was TJ Marshall. He suffered another engine failure to his No.15 during the series’ last race at Delaware Speedway on July 15.

The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds take a one-week break from active competition, allowing a handful of drivers the opportunity to lick their wounds and recover from mechanical issues. The tour will return to Flamboro for race 10 on Saturday, August 13. Visit www.flamborospeedway.ca and www.vintagemods.com for more information.
