Cory Turner, Jesse Costa, Dave Bailey and Nick Masi Claim Wins on Burger Barn Wall of Fame and Kids Race Night at Ohsweken

By Carin Sundin

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (June 15, 2018) – A total of 120 cars were signed in across four divisions as Burger Barn presented Wall of Fame night and Kids Race for the Canadian National Autism Foundation at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, June 15. An on-track ceremony at intermission welcomed five new members to the Wall of Fame, including Fred Carleton, Kaith Dempster, Kelly Hallett, and Ken & Cheryl Pelkie as Ohsweken Speedway honoured those who have been a part of the speedway’s amazing history and helped make the track what it is today. Representatives from Kids Race were also on hand to help raise awareness for the Canadian National Autism Foundation.

On the track, it was Cory Turner picking up the win in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car Feature. Jesse Costa scored his second victory of the season in the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car Feature while Dave Bailey won the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock Feature and Nick Masi claimed the checkered flag in the HRW Automotive Mini Stock main event.

Mike Thorne and Tyler Hendricks brought the field to the green flag for the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car 20-lap Feature event. Hendricks worked the outside lane to gain the early lead over Thorne, Jim Huppenen, Dylan Westbrook, and Ryan Turner.

Ryan Turner, Thorne, Huppenen and Westbrook battled for position as Huppenen pulled a slide job to get past Thorne and Turner for second position. By lap four, Hendricks and Huppenen had a substantial lead over Westbrook, Ryan Turner and Thorne, while Cory Turner and Mack DeMan followed closely in a battle for sixth position.

By lap six, Hendricks was weaving his way through lapped traffic with a half straightaway between him, Huppenen and Westbrook. A red flag came at lap eight when Scott Burke lost the rear end out of his No.9b and rolled on the back stretch. Burke was able to get out of the vehicle on his own and was towed to the pits while Westbrook was sent to the pits for damage to his wing and rad. DeMan also found himself being pushed to the pits with driveline damage effectively finishing both of their nights and ending Westbrook’s bid for an eighth straight win.

The restart saw Hendricks, Huppenen, Ryan Turner, Cory Turner and Steele in the top five positions. Hendricks quickly drove to the lead over Huppenen before Jake Brown found himself off the top in turn three and four to bring out a caution at lap 10.

Hendricks and Huppunen continued to battle upfront on the restart when Mikey Kruchka went around in turn four and collected Ryan Turner to bring out the caution on lap 12.

Hendricks continued to hold the lead on the restart over Huppenen and Cory Turner, but on lap 19 as the three drivers were racing for the checkers, Hendricks drifted up to kiss the wall which opened the door for Cory Turner to drive by on the inside as he held on for the win over Hendricks, Huppenen, Steele and Mitch Brown.

Shone Evans and Holly Porter started on the front row for the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car 20-lap Feature. Evans took the lead over Porter and Jesse Costa but a caution on lap one saw Brian Nanticoke, Paul Ballantyne, Liam Martin and Jacob Dykstra all collected up at the bottom of turn 4.

A single-file restart had Evans take the lead over Porter with Costa, Brad Herron and Rob Neely rounding out the early top five. A caution came out on lap seven when Nanticoke went around up against the inside retaining blocks in corner two.

Evans, Porter, Costa went three wide on the restart with Herron and Hannah Ferrell giving chase. Porter dove to the inside in a bid for the lead when Nanticoke went around again to bring out a quick caution before the action continued. Porter stayed low again with Evans and Costa taking the high side with Lucas Smith and Aaron Turkey, The caution flag came out again on lap 10 as A.J. Lewis slid up the track and found himself pointed the wrong way in turn three.

Costa used the restart to take the lead over Porter briefly, but the two swapped positions again the following lap. Fast and furious action saw Evans overtake Porter for the second position at lap 15, before Porter ran to the inside to pass Evans and run side by side with Costa in lapped traffic with four laps to go. Lapped traffic slowed Porter just enough for Costa to take the win at the finish line. Porter was followed by Shone Evans, Aaron Turkey and Lucas Smith in the top-five.

Donny Lampman and Aaron Rewutzsky rolled off at the front of the field for the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock 20-lap Feature. Rewutzsky quickly took the lead and was followed by Chris Hale and Brian Teeple.

Hale led the pack when Rewutzsky blew a tire and Billy Bleich Jr. made contact, sending Rewutzsky onto his side in the top of turn 3. Rewutzsky was uninjured but the damage ended his night.

Hale continued to lead following another restart at lap six, holding off Bomberry, Rob Hoskins, Dave Bailey and Ken Sargent. Mark Bauzin looped his car in turn three on lap nine to bring out a caution, causing him to head for the pits for repairs, which also gave Ryan Dinning the opportunity to replace a flat tire. Both cars made it back out on the lead lap for the restart.

On the restart Hale and Hoskins raced for the lead while Bomberry, Bailey and Ryan Beagle gave chase. Dave Bailey raced to take the lead from Hale on lap 13 just before a caution was called for Kasey Huffman.

Lap 16 found Beagle on Bailey’s bumper in the battle for the lead. Beagle tried to overtake Bailey on the inside and it was a dogfight as they raced out of turn four for the checkers, but Bailey took his third win over Beagle, Hale, Wyatt Van Wart and Ken Sargent.

Jason Tolton and Andy Ryckman lined up on the front row for the HRW Automotive Mini Stock 15-lap main event. Ryckman took the lead over Tolton with cars racing five wide behind them down the backstretch on the opening lap. A red flag came out shortly after when Jason Dixon rolled over at the bottom of turn three. Dixon was uninjured.

On the restart, Ryckman and Longboat charged for the lead with Tolton and DeBoer coming up fast behind.  DeBoer passed Tolton for third and then overtook Longboat for second with his sights set on Ryckman. By lap five DeBoer took the lead over Ryckman, Longboat, Nick Masi and Tim Nuell.

A caution came out on lap 10 as Jeremy May made contact with the backstretch wall but was able to continue. DeBoer held the lead on the restart with Tolton, Masi, Hils and Ryckman making up the top five.
Masi, who started the feature in the 10th row was now racing DeBoer for the lead.  The two drivers broke away from the rest of the pack and battled side by side for several laps with Masi taking the lead at lap 13 over DeBoer followed by Ryckman, Hils and Kyle Wert

On the final lap, DeBoer continued to challenge Masi but drifted too high coming out of turn one and found himself coming to rest at the wall in corner two. With the checkered flag out, the race to the finish continued without a caution. Ryckman lost a tire in the final turn as Masi took the win ahead of Wert, DeBoer, Gillian Hils and Martin Schroder.
