Westbrook wins SOS 23rd season opener at Brighton Speedway

A packed and enthusiastic crowd cheered on the Southern Ontario Sprints Saturday as they kicked their 23rd season of competition into high gear with the first of five appearances at Brighton Speedway.  The night presented by Vanderlaan Building Products Ltd., First Place Trailers and Brighton Recycling saw a total of 22 sprint cars signed in for the opening round of the tour schedule.  The action-packed racing card also featured the Vanderlaan Building Products Ltd. Hotch’s Auto Parts Late Model Triple Crown Race 1, Bainer’s OilGARD Anti Rust Canadian Modified Division and the Brighton Automotive Larry’s Towing Thunder Stock Triple Crown Race 2.

Westbrook wins SOS opening night feature
After two rain outs at Brighton, the Southern Ontario Sprints were eager to hit the 1/3 clay oval track and race fans were just as excited to watch them let loose.  No. 10 Mitch Brown and No. 01 Kyle Fraser started on the front row and led the 22-car field to green in the 25-lap main event. Brown held on to his top position and was dominate for much of the race.  Coming off a win from the night before at Oshweken Speedway No. 97 Cory Turner was eager to taste victory again quickly working from his seventh position past the field into the top five on the 3rd trip around.  Turner and returning champ No. 47x Dylan Westbrook, who started 9th were solid behind the wheel sliding right behind Brown on the 13th lap.  On the 19th time around, Westbrook snagged the lead, leaving Brown and Turner to settle second.  A swift slide off turns three and four by Brown secured his second-place finish with Turner in third, No. 91 Ryan Turner fourth and No. 11J Chris Jones fifth.

Brown bags cash in dash
During the intermission, six teams made up of the top two teams in each heat took to the track for the sprint car dash for cash presented by Docks R Us and Four Points Sheraton.  No.10 Mitch Brown led the field to green and dominated the 10-lap race to victory lane.

Sandercock scores triple crown victory
No. 57 Charlie Sandercock’s fourth win on the season didn’t come easy as a tough field of Vanderlaan Building Products Ltd. Late Models made him work for Hotch’s Auto Parts Triple Crown bragging rights.  No. 98 Craig Graham took the field to green in the 35-lap feature and was unstoppable in his 98 machine for the first 19 laps.  Eventual fourth place finisher, No. 89 Austin King proved to be Graham’s biggest contender early in the race, going head to head with the leader as Sandercock worked by the field from his 11th starting place.  Sandercock took over on the 20th trip around the high side of the 1/3rd mile oval and checked out.  On the same lap the door opened for No. 12 Kyle Sopaz to move into third past King.  With Sandercock now at a straight away lead, Sopaz, Graham and King battled it out for the second position with the No. 12 machine securing runner up.  Graham took home a third, followed by King in forth and Caley Weese who remained strong and consistent in her No.77 to score another fifth place finish.

King claims first season win

No. 39 Jonah Mutton and No. 14 Brandt Graham started on the front row for the OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modified feature.  Graham jumped to an early lead on the first lap of the 25-lap race.  A decision to take the outside on an 11th lap re-start proved to be an unlucky one for Graham as No. 07 Curtis King bit down on the inside line and took the lead.  Following King through to the front was No. 91 Kraig Handley still hungry for his first win and No. 87 Andrew Hennessy determined to snag five features in a row, King worked hard to put some distance between him and the field but Handley and Hennessy closed in to apply some pressure, King remained unfazed and cruised to victory lane for his first checkered flag of the season and earning the title of Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week.  Handley scored his second runner-up badge in as many nights leaving Hennessy to settle for third.  Graham placed fourth with No. 12 Adam Whaley earning a fifth-place finish.

Anderson takes Triple Crown

No. 17 Jeff Humphry took the field to green in the 25-lap Larry’s Towing Triple Crown Race 2 and didn’t let up for 15 laps.  Working his way up from his 10th starting position No. 72 Doug Anderson eventually secured runner-up setting his sights on Humphry.  The pair went door to door with Anderson slipping by and taking the lead on lap 16.  Humphry was unable to keep the pace as Anderson pulled away.  A caution on the 21st lap seemed to even the playing field for No. 03 Justin Ramsay and No. 53 Wade Purchase who drove hard from mid-pack resting behind the leader.  Anderson put the hammer down and drove to his second season win.  Purchase solidified runner-up spot with Ramsay in third, No. 85 Austin Reid fourth and Humphry held on to earn fifth.
