McLean, Young Dominate Opening Night

Varney ON -  On Friday May 23rd history was made in Ontario stockcar history with the opening of Full Throttle Motor Speedway, formally Varney Speedway Motorplex.  Gord Bennett of Cambridge took over the speedway on May 1st and after 3 weeks of intense cleaning repairing and painting the Bennett family and their staff greeted racers and fans from across the province.

On top of all the cosmetic changes to the speedway the format of the racing has also been updated to the delight of drivers and fans alike.  Gone are heat races and every division now running at Full Throttle Motor Speedway will run two twenty lap features per night with the overall points earned in both races determining the weekly pay outs.  Line up is done by a draw of numbers at the start of the night for the first feature and the second feature is a complete reverse of the line up of the first race.

The opening race of the season saw the Open Wheel Modifieds take to the track from the drop of the green flag the car to chase was #91 Mike Westwood followed close behind by #8 Gary McLean until they caught up to some lap traffic causing some contact with #91 of Westwood which also caught #8 Mclean sending both cars to the pits.  This opened the door for #7 Brent McLean of Conn to take over and hold off the hard charging #88 Tommy Robb of Durham for the first victory of the 2014 season, third was #23 Paul Milligan.  The second feature of the night for the Open Wheel Modified saw young Brent McLean in his #7 Plow Boys Racing machine work hard to hold of his older cousin #8 Gary McLean to take the sweep on opening night, third went to #4 Aaron McLean.

The V8 Thunder Stock division saw a large and impressive field show for opening night with great door handle to door handle racing as the leaders turning the quicker laps had to work their way through the lap traffic on the ¼ mile highbanks which make up Full Throttle Speedway.  In the end it was three cars making their way to the front in each feature.  Feature 1 saw #36 Ken Grubb make a late race pass to taking the checker followed by the young gun #17 Tristan Gill and rounding out the top 3 working his way from the back was #76 Shawn Arnott.  Feature 2 saw #76 of Shawn Arnott on pole and he would not look back as he went wire to wire in this feature, followed this time by #36 Ken Grubb and #17 Tristan Gill.

In the Mini Stock division #36 Cory Young set the bar for the season as the car to beat as he took both features but they were not handed to him by his fellow competitors.  In feature one it wasn’t until lap 15 that Young would get past #85 Bill Clarke of Mount Forest to make his run to the checker, rounding out the top three was # 50 of Chad Corcoran.  In feature 2 after a lap 5 caution for #50 Corcoran loosing fuel #36 Young would line up on the inside of the defending Mini Stock champion from Waterloo #51 Clark Hartman and they would battle hard for the remaining laps but Young was flawless not giving Hartman a chance to pass.  Rounding out the top three this time was #85 Bill Clarke.
Pure Stock action also saw a large number of cars take to the track for both features but the outcome would be the same for both races after some hard battles.  The top 3 would be the same for both races.  Winning both features was #76 Shawn Taylor, followed by #17 Nick Clarke and #43 Joey Schouten.

Next racing action at Full Throttle Motor Speedway is this Friday May 30th with Sportsman Cup 25’s, V8 Thunder Stocks, Outlaw 4 Modifieds, Pure Stocks and the Crazy Trains, green flag is 7:30.
