Border Patrol – A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

This past weekend was the season finale at Mohawk International Raceway with two full days of racing on tap beginning on Friday night with the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series, Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stocks Go Nuclear Late Models and the Mod Lites and Bandits. Time Trials on Friday had just been completed when the skies opened up. The track waited out the rain as long as possible but it soon became evident that they were going to have to make alternative plans. The decision was soon made to run the entire weekend’s scheduled all on Saturday, setting up a crazy day of racing.
Saturday was a much better day, as they picked up where they left off on Friday before the rain. After the qualifying heats, they moved on to the main events. Jimmy Phelps, of Baldwinsville, New York captured the 100 lap Big Block Modified race for the second year in a row, holding off Dale Planck at the checkered flag. Justin Haers, Carey Terrance and Steve Bernard rounded out the top five. Joey Ladouceur dominated the Pro Stock main event, winning by a nearly a half lap over second place finisher Ryan Stabler. Jody Swamp, Bruno Cyr and Allen Peters rounded out the top five. Sean Beardsley won the Go Nuclear Late Model event over Greg Belyea.
With Friday’s portion of the events over, the stands cleared, and the teams that were not participating in Saturday’s events cleared out to make room for the cars that were coming into the track for the 358 Modified and Sportsman Series races. With many cars on hand in all divisions, it made for a late evening. 358 Modified track champion and Frenchie’s Champion Billy Dunn took the win in the 75 lap Series race over Australian racer Peter Britten, Matt Billings, Dale Planck and Danny O’Brien. Mathieu Desjardins from Quebec won the Sportsman Series race finishing ahead of Chris Herbison, Brandon Easey, Devin Caron and Gary Lindberg, while Dale Caswell edged out Adam Turner in the Go Nuclear Late Model main event.
This coming weekend is the annual Applefest Weekend at Brighton Speedway as they host their inaugural Mr. DIRTcar Series races for both the Sportsman Series and 358 Modifieds. The Sportsman will compete on Friday night along with a full show of Pro Stocks, Stingers and Comp4’s as well at the Vintage Modifieds. The 358 Modifieds will race on Saturday night joined by the Late Models, Canadian Modifieds and a $1000 to win Hoosier Stock/Street Stock Challenge as the Brighton Speedway cars battle the Merrittville Speedway Hoosier Stocks.
There is still plenty of racing in store as the 2012 season winds down. After this weekend’s Applefest at Brighton we move on to the annual Outlaw 200 Weekend at Fulton Speedway the following weekend, then its Super DIRT Week followed by the 1000 Islands RV Centre DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals at Brockville Speedway on October 12th to 14th.
