Well to be honest SLEEPY, I do have lots of albums, but think my Dad had more of the racing related ones and now hes down east. He will be helping out at Scotia Speedworld in some capacity, and for the record I am envious of that as they have some great true Late Model races down that way!! I'm kickin my butt that I think most of my old programs were thrown out around the mid to late 80's but do have a few really old photos in the albums I retained just no scanner!!! But one of me and John Eacott that I would like to enlarge just unsure how to do it!!! Does anyone remember a photo guy that worked at Barrie in the mid 70's named Brian Campbell??? Anyways, he put together a string of 7-8 photo albums of Barrie action and cars that my dad still has, will work on getting him to bring to Barrie this year as I think he will be coming to check out a week or two of action and maybe I can get Rod to scan them for us all to add to one of these topics!!!!

Kinda off topic but does anyone remember what kind of car it was that GILGAN from Calgary drove??? I just remember his car was quite unique looking to me in the day. but then again I was 7-8 years old!!!!!LOL

That pic with Ray McGill  # 42 LM sure brings back memories for me as Ray is my hubby and passed away January 15 2008, he really luved the racing and just sold his race car 4 yrs. ago but we still attended race tracks all over and followed Nascar every week. "Thanks for the Memory".

Lloyd Howard may not have been one of the quickist cars at Sunset but he was there from the time the place opened its gates the first year until the late 70s . Lloyd never had much money but built his own cars and his own engines and it was not unusual to see Lloyd by himself at the track doing all his own crew work .

This is an earlier car of Lloyds he built in 1969 and this shot is from Pinecrest but he ran this car for several years at Sunset .

For who ever put these pictures in, a "BIG THANK-YOU."  Brings back a lot of memories !  The picture with the car with Traceys name on the back of it was when that car went up the bank and sharply turned going thru the fence and hitting a couple of young gentlemen breaking a couple of limbs. Remember that one very well. The the night that a car came off corner four up the bank and tasking out the starters stand. Ralph Vokey was the starter and jumped out of the stand, just as the car took the whole thing out. Ralph landed on the paved track, with only a few scratches. Daves mother was one of the first ones to get on the track.

I think beside McGill is #79 Dave Isen who raced outts London at the time if my memory is correct!! I was wondering that when the flood pic in the pits was displayed cause hes pitted beside Jack Cook in that one and you get a clearer look at the car!!! But I think Isen raced #79 at that time!!! But if I am wrong someone please correct me!!!

bf-sort of thinking the 79 might be Dundas' Rich Grady in the Serv-a-station camaro owned by Pete Shepherd the 1st.

You are correct MIKE 32!!! The more I thought about it, I remember that Isen raced #42 at the time!!! Was a white, green, and gold paint scheme if I remember!! And as soon as you mentioned the name Grady I remembered it and he most def would probably be the 79.

I think Isen was sponsored by Purolator back in the day. Just wondering, re the car of Shaughessy's (sp?) shown, was that a Corvair body???  The front fenders sort of have a 68 Chevelle look to them, but that car looks really short!
Title: Re: Sunset Speedway Hall of Fame
Post by: sleepy11 on February 18, 2008, 05:35:09 PM
I am pretty sure it was a Corvair bodied Chevy II

So you won't mind if I agree with Dave and say that was 1973 that Kerrry raced that big ole Chevy in the 6-cylinders? :)

I go by what car we were running at the time and I have all my pics filed by year from the history I used to do on my brother's website. Helps to have run a different bodystyle nearly every year. It also explains why I get lost from about 1985 up to the early 90s since we weren't racing and I wasn't around the tracks.

I always thought that the car was a 1963-64 Chev Impala but looking at that big trunk space and the rear window opening I think it may have been a Chev Biscayne.

In the colour pic you can see titleist Doug Duncan's Flying Bedstead 57 Chevy that was dubbed the Ruptured Duck by announcer Doug McLellan.

I'm not 100% sure this is 73 I could be wrong, thou in 73 Sunset and Barrie had combined points, I know cause my dad led the points for the better part of the year, until gettin dq for a questionable part, thus giving the points to Duncan, which for some reason in my mind I thought he drove a chevy II or a nova. I could be wrong?? I dont remember Kerry driving that yr as he was helping my dad.

Regardin Dave Isen

Londoner here, one that grew up a couple blocks from the Isen shop. In the pic Sleepy posted, the car was indeed white with blue numbering. And he is also right about Purolator. The White, Green, Gold scheme came a couple years later, and the sponsor was Southwestern Welder Supply, whose colors the Isen car sported for a number of years.

I only have the photo of the Southwestern car with the 80s style Camaro, though he sported the same colors with an older style body as well. (I do have one pic of it, but its so fuzzy it isn't worth posting)

Neither of the following photos are mine.

I'm new here and not sure how to post a comment, so putting it here.

I see that Barrie Speedway cars have to display decals on fenders , "wonder how many times they'll have to change them" ? LOL

If someone would like to explain how I post a new topic , feel free to do so.

The day after that Sunset feature win in 1977, Biederman won the Maple Leaf 250 at Cayuga I believe. He had an incredible season in the Nova.

You are correct. That year they divided the Maple Leaf into twin 125 lappers. Each race started 50 (not a typo) cars. Bieder won both halves...much to this kid's chagrin.

I hated the guy back then and wanted any car but that butt-ugly nova to win.  :D

(We drove down to that race in my Mom's best friend's orange camaro...so we were rooting mostly for either Speedy Jack or Ron Pearn.)

Biederman may have also won on the Friday night at Delaware in the Wheelspin News sponsored Late Model Series which would have been quite a Labour Day weekend for him.  Anyone remember?

Statsman...  are the Delaware and Cayuga stories in that same issue? I wish I had saved my 1977 issues! Earl Ross was the overall champion of the Series.

I can never tell a 64 from a 65 unless I can see the bumper and grille but I think it is a 64.
thanks, i still own a 64 street stock that was run until 05, rolled on dirt, i think we will bring it back one more time in the colors that earnhardt won his first pavement race. i would send pics if i could figure out how.

I'm curious does anyone remember who was the champ in Sunset's top division in the tracks first year of operation in 68??? How bout the 69 & 70 track champs??? What was the top division called at the track back then?? As mentioned earlier in this topic Mr. Clean Doug Warnes was champ in 71. My question is: Did he win anymore titles either before or after that one??? I know Tom Milligan won the first track title after Pinecrest closed in the 77 season and if I'm not mistaken that was the start of 5 in a row he won back then. Anyone know for sure?? Any feedback as to old time Sunset champs would be appreciated!! I think we need to get this topic going a little more, so feel free to chime in on old Sunset stories or pics!!!! Thanks guys these Hall of Fame topics are great!!!

The first year Champ at Sunset was the #21 of Rick Batters and he may have won the second year as well .  The top class was Diamond cars and let me tell you the cars were rough compared to what we had at Pinecrest at the time . I only attended 1 race at Sunset the opening year but the one thing that stands out about the cars was the giant bumpers .

Batters did run Wasaga and South Shore but i dont think he ever won a title anywhere else .

Edit i will see if i can find a pic of his car .

I dont remember Batter's myself but pretty sure hes still in the area as my Dad told me he bumped into him at the Simcoe Hotel a few years ago and asked if I remembered him!!! I was born in 69 so would explain why the name didnt ring a bell!!!

Heres a pic of Rick at Wasaga in his B Bomb (six cylinder modified) around 1967 where he did win the points championship in this car . I think Rick still lives in the Barrie area . I think his mom (Dolly)who also raced this car in the Powder Puff division .

If so thats where my Dad bought his first and only race car in what was a very short lived driving career!!!LOL Got old pics of him and that car but think they could be down in N.S with him when he moved!! But as I say I'm going to get a hold of those old albums and post some pics here but that wont happen till mid summer at best!!!

All I can say is wow! My grandparents built the race track, and I haven't seen half of these photos. However my mom has some good arial shots of when the pits we're on the other side, in corner 3-4. And she has a lot of Victory lane photos from the time she was Miss. Sunset...

Keep adding these..

Great old school pic PINEY!!!! Let me ask you a little about South Shore!!! Is that the same as Sutton Speedway???

Yes South Shore Speedway is Sutton . It was located about a mile west of Sutton on Baseline Rd . The grandstand was a hill with posts pounded into the ground with planks on it .  It was a paved 1/4 mile oval and probally the narrowest  track i have ever seen .

The pic that statman posted of Del Meeks car gives you an idea of what the bumpers were like at Sunset back then  but Del did not have the as big of bumpers as some of those guys ran .  Looking at that car of Dels that looks pretty rough its hard to believe that in just a few years and after he made the move to Pinecrest Del had some of the most professionally prepared and clean looking cars around .

Ok now that I've kinda got this picture thingy worked out...lets get the ball rolling again ;D

This is from Sunset in '68 or '69. From what I understand this car, a '57 Pontiac called the Pony Express, with a 302 Z in it I think, was a track champ one of those years.

This is Sunset in '72 or '73 a '64 Corvair in the 6 cylinder class. Love that "soft wall" they had then   ::)

I am pretty sure that the #60 Corvair was previously a v8 powered Diamond class car that ran at Barrie in 1969-70. Same colours but it was numbered #260 (after the Sunoco gas) and driven by John Mason from Orillia.

Cool looking diecast. I think.I need to get a magnifying glass :)

I'm not sure where the Corvair body came from but the chasis is from the 57 Pontiac which is pictured above in my previous post. Both cars raced at Sunset on Wednesdays and Barrie on Saturdays in the late 60's early 70's. If you notice , I know it is hard to see, but the 57 Pontiac's number is 260. The Corvair is unsponsored in that picture. During that time I think there was some sort of dispute either with the track or between drivers and most guys ran unsponsored for part of the season.

P.S. I'm not sure what year the car was changed from the 57 Pontiac to the Corvair but the driver in the pictures is not John Mason.

I don't have a great pic of the 260 that John Mason drove, I think I have a better shot in an old Barrie program at home.

Here he is tangled at Barrie with the original Ridge Road hot shot, the late Terry Barr (Gordie's uncle? Something like that).

Another one of Big Bad John Mason after a flip at Barrie (and this would be a Ron Melson picture from the Glenn Watson collection :))

In 1970 Rookie Larry Stefnik drove a team Corvair to the 260 also sponsored by Mason's Sunoco and it was number 66. I don't recall making the connection before but Mark Donahue was running Roger Penske's #6 Sunoco Camaro in Trans Am at that time. Could be where Larry's #66 came from, Garf Peacock already had the #6 at Barrie.

Anyway the Sunset #60 Corvair triggered a childhood memory of that car and that I had always thought it had something to do with Mason's car given the same colours and number style.

I don't recall the 57 Pontiac at all but in those years of the Diamonds at Sunset I was mainly at Barrie selling programs for 35 cents each. I think I made 4 cents a program plus the occasional tip. We used to work the parking lots and be right there when they got out of their car. Then there would be kids at the gate and after the people arriving thinned out we would work the stands too. On Sundays after camping out at the track my brother and I would go crawling under the stands looking for money and stuff that had fallen from above the night before :)

That reminds me of another story of teaching him to drive on Sunday mornings in the empty parking lot at Barrie when I was 12 and he was 5. I'd work the pedals and let him steer sitting on my knees. No wonder he knows the quick way around now eh? :):):)

Anyone know when the 6 cyl class at Sunset was born? I first recall them in 1972 when my dad started selling them the 8 inch Hoosier recaps that were used in the Barrie Diamonds from 1970 on. They were certainly the forerunner of the Thunders of today, a support division that quite often put on the best show. Romping Ronnie Vellinga, Stomping Tom, Kerry Coburn, Grant Broome, Mike Visser, Doug Duncan, Ron Melson, Gord Graves were just a few of the stars from the early 6 Cylinder days and the class would live on at Barrie into the mid-80s.

I use and recommend Photobucket - free account and the space they give you is huge.  Upload to the account, copy the URL of the picture(s), then use the "insert image" button here (the one in the toolbar between the youtube and globe buttons) to post the picture URLs.

When replying to a post you will see a bunch of options above you. The first row will start with [ B ] [ I ] and so on. The next row will have icons. Choose the 3rd icon in from the left hand side. It will be insert image.

When you do so this will come up in your message...
[ img ][ /img ]
Simply place your link in the middle of the 2 brackets like this...
[  img ] http:/www.racingporn.com [ /img ]
Please note that I had to add spaces to the above example as this message thought I was trying to insert an image and would only display a broken link graphic

Hope that helps!

LOL!!!! Jim Cutting has the same haircut!!! and man, someone should take that pic of Dario to the track and give it to Paula, his wife! Im sure she would get a giggle out of it!

Hey Junior, you like that picture do you?  We actually have an ashtray with a similar photo in it!!!! hahaha I am guessing it was one of Bettys items...was looking through some old programs and also noticed mention of Dario missing out on the championship in 1996, nice to see that someone else remembers that other than us..it definitely sucked...I may add some details of this on the thread that ladybugprincess has started on history from 1996-2003....

That would be a good idea as that'd be a story to tell since it was a good part of the history and something that should be remembered. And yah, that's probably (98% sure) one of Betty's.

kootie30, check out canadianracer.com and racepulse.com...

Both of those gentleman I believe are regulars here... and have a few pics of Pinecrest on their sites.

Other than that, maybe someone like Statsman would have a few, after all it closed in 1976... most of us were just new fans then.  ;D

I used to go with my Dad when I was a kid to Pinecrest all the time. I remember how I used to beg him to go sit in the sand pile next door to watch the racing cuz it looked like so much fun. There was a big mountain of sand (I guess for the roads) that people would climb up and park their butts to watch for free.

I also remember, as a kid, that Pinecrest had better stuff to find under the stands than when we went to Sunset..lol.

Those pictures are fantastic they bring back great memories of the good old days. the quality of drivers was second to non the who' who of that era. The thing that blew me away was the crowd comletely jammed but that was reality back then every Saturday night and Sunday of long week-ends greta job Lady Princess!

Here is a diecast I made of the same car ;D

Here's another shot of John Mason's #260 from Barrie in 1970.

I hear what you are saying on the geneaology of the #60 but that half-windshield and rear view mirror on the side and the angle and way the door bar sticks out at the back  are all pretty similar. At least could explain why I thought they were the same car back then in addition to the number/paint scheme.

Statsman does have nice photos but the first three are mine from when I posted them last year. I just figured out how to make them bigger and clearer. The last one Statman added from a Barrie program I believe.

Statsman, I sent an email off to my Uncle about the 260. We'll see what he says.
If you notice the first pic the car is also #260 and sponsored by Crown Hill Sunoco so there may be a link there. I know when the #60 Corvair was being raced my Uncle worked at an ESSO on Gasoline Alley so the Sunoco sponsorship probably wouldn't have been a good idea especially since the car was parked at the ESSO station.

Statsman it appears that yet again we are not worthy and must bow in your presence ;D
I emailed the pictures of the 260 and it appears that you are correct in your recollections. When I know more about the chronology I will post more or PM you.
