Petty International Raceway to Host Second Annual MetalCore and D.R. Scrap Metals Night of Destruction Saturday
Demolition and stock car events co-headline busy night on River Glade oval
(July 6th, 2016 - River Glade, NB) - Petty International Raceway has set the stage for a “smashing” night of motorsports action this Saturday, July 9th. In addition to a full card of stock car racing action, the track will host their second annual Demolition Derby presented by MetalCore and D.R. Scrap Metals. The green flag on Saturday night will fly at 6pm.
The MetalCore and D.R. Scrap Metals Demolition Derby has drawn interest from Demolition circuit enthusiasts and stock car stars alike to crash and bash for the $1,000 top prize. Josh Lounsbury of River Glade, New Brunswick won the inaugural Demolition event last year at Petty International Raceway but if he plans on defending he will have some stiff competition to drive through, no pun intended, to get the top prize once more.
Among the early entrants include Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour star Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro, NS), who won the Petty 100 for the Series in June on the high banked oval. Mackenzie Racing of Salisbury, NB, will field three cars in addition to their stock car program on Saturday night. Also entered is stock car veteran Jamie Creamer (Spryfield, NS), commonly known around the circuit as “The Pit Lizzard.”
Also a part of the MetalCore and D.R. Scrap Metals Night of Destruction activities include a barrel race and a reverse race for Demolition competitors.
Headlining the stock car portion of the show is the Late Model Sportsman division as they will contest a 100-lap point paying feature on Saturday evening. Defending track champion Luc Bourgeois (Memramcook, NB) leads the point standings after two events with two runner-up finishes. Andrew Rodgers (Smithtown, NB), who won the Quality Concrete 100 to open the season on May 21st, is only one point behind Bourgeois in the championship chase. Sophomore Sportsman driver Kenny Mackenzie Jr. (Salisbury, NB) is third in points, just five markers out of the top spot.
With $2,000 on the line for the top spot in the MetalCore and D.R. Scrap Metals 100 on Saturday, another stout field of Late Model drivers from around the region are expected to converge on Petty International Raceway for their shot at the big money.
“The Thrill Maker” Craig Ward (Riverview, NB) continues to lead what is a pretty thrilling battle in the Extreme Window and Entrance Systems Street Stock class, where four drivers are starting to separate themselves from the field in the championship picture. Ward, who has won the last two feature events in the class, has a four point lead over Nick Cudmore (Goshen, NB). Mike Duskey of Albany, Prince Edward Island, runs third in the standings with a one point advantage on Shawn Lewis (Salisbury, NB). Lewis has been the quietest of the quartet up front with three fourth place finishes in as many races. The gap from first to fourth in the standings after three events is seven points.
Tim Webster (Beaver Bank, NS) has been pristine through three races in the Mister Transmission Mini Stock class. Webster has cleaned house thus far, winning every feature race contested for the class. Logan Power (Moncton, NB) runs second, only two points ahead of Chantel Ackles (Shubenacadie, NS), who is having a career season behind the wheel of her #30 B&N Distributors Honda Civic. Tucked up tight in the standings include sophomore Rob Poirier (Irishtown, NB) and former track champions JR Lawson (Shubenacadie, NS) and Mike Weagle (Salisbury, NB). Between second place driver Power and Weagle in sixth is only a six point gap, meaning Saturday’s feature could go a long way in shaping the championship landscape leaving the MetalCore and D.R. Scrap Metals Night of Destruction.
The Leisure Days RV Bandolero class also has a tight knit group atop the championship standings after three races. “The Flying Frenchman” Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB) stills leads the championship standings and Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow, NS) remains second in the chase, but the vice has tightened behind them. Josh Langille (Coldbrook, NS) is third in the standings, five points behind the leaders but only a single point up on the tie for fourth between Austin MacDonald (Pictou, NS) and Nathan Blackburn (Timberlea, NS). Cormier, Rogers and MacDonald each own feature wins thus far in 2016.
The exciting Women on Wheels class will make their second of three appearances at Petty Raceway this Saturday. The girls provided an edge-of-your-seat first event in June in which Ashley Campbell (Harrietsfield, NS) took the checkered flag first over Brenda Shortell (Lakeside, NS) and Sherry “Ricky Bobby” Mackenzie (Salisbury, NB). Expect the Women on Wheels to leave it all out on the track Saturday as they try to upstage the boys of Petty International Raceway!
Mike “Sparky” Raeburn (Hampton, NB) took home a non-point feature the last time the Atlantic Modified Tour was at Petty International Raceway on June 5th. He’ll look to take a second checkered flag on the high banked oval on Saturday. Justin Beers leads Joe Hoyt and Doug Matchett in the championship standings heading into Saturday’s Atlantic Modified Tour feature.
Grandstand admission prices for Saturday’s events are $20 for adults and $10 for youth aged eight to 18, while children seven years of age and under will be admitted free. Pit admission is $25 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Pit gates for competitors open at 1:30pm, grandstand gates open for spectators at 4pm with racing getting underway at 6pm.
