FIREWORKS AND RACING
EDMONTON, AB - To celebrate the Canada Day long weekend, many communities across Alberta will be holding spectacular fireworks shows at night. This Saturday and Sunday in Sangudo, Alberta, there will be a rare opportunity to see some fireworks in the daytime. Sangudo Speedway hosts its first ever, Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series two-day points race. On-track fireworks are expected at the scenic race facility located one-hour northwest of Edmonton. Whitecourt, Alberta's Kevin Wheeler, the defending NPP Series Champion, leads the early season points chase heading into the first two-day race weekend of the 2014 season. Wheeler is already considered the early favorite. "I started racing stock cars in Sangudo back in 1991," admits the driver of the Tundra Oilfield/Bill Weins Trucking #3 Dodge, "ran the stock car for five years then moved into the Alberta Outlaw Modified class." Wheeler went to victory lane at last Septembers NPP Late Model Series event in Sangudo. "I had never run a late model in Sangudo before until last year. To win it was a big bonus." Wheeler won the season opening Feature in Edmonton back on June 7th to become the first driver in the 14 year history of the NPP Series to win back to back season openers. "Things have been clicking for us as of late. We've found the sweet spot on this car as far as the set up. We're keeping it [car setup] to ourselves." Wheeler enters the Sangudo race weekend poised to set another NPP Series record. Wheeler has five consecutive Feature wins dating back to last season. Only one other NPP Series driver has accomplished the same feat. Retired NPP Series driver Mike Tom won five features in a row over two seasons (2010/2011). Wheeler could break the tie with Tom with a trip to victory lane Saturday afternoon. "That would be a nice record to have."

Two-time NPP Series Champion Dwight Kennedy sits second in the championship point standings heading into the Sangudo race weekend. "It's going to be a carnage filled race. That's my prediction. Dirt tracks and daytime is never a good combination." For the Sangudo Speedway season opening weekend, held back in May, track conditions proved extremely trying for both race officials and all competitors. The driver of the Northern Provincial Pipelines #81 Dodge realizes that weather conditions will be a major factor this weekend. "It sure will help if its cloudy both days. Hope they have lots of water in the water truck as well. Kennedy hopes to perform well in Sangudo. "I wouldn't say it's [Sangudo] a make or break weekend but I have to stay out of trouble and not get impatient which is tough sometimes. Consistency will be the key for me this weekend.

Calgary, Alberta's Mark Miller scored his first podium finish [third] in the NPP Late Model Series at the 2014 season opener in Edmonton and currently sits third in the championship point standings. The driver of the A1 Autobody #69 Chevrolet is looking forward to a return trip to the Sangudo facility. "I've only run their once and it was a good fun track." Last September, Miller scored his first top-five NPP Series finish at Sangudo Speedway. "Our car ran very good there last year. Sure hope we can repeat. We have the setup numbers from last year's race and we will be going back to them." Miller has close to 10 years of pavement late model experience running in Western Canada and Montana. Miller finished ninth in the 2013 NPP Series Championship points chase........ his first full season on the 'dirt'.
