School Bus Action at Brighton Speedway

Sunny skies and the ever-popular Workman OK Tire & Automotive School Bus races brought hundreds of fans eager to take in a thrilling night of dirt track racing at Brighton Speedway on Saturday.

After two consecutive weeks of rained out races, fans were not left disappointed as Lange & Fetter Ford along with Hotch’s Auto Parts presented an action packed program featuring four regular Brighton divisions plus the school bus races had the crowd on the edge of their seats.

A three-wide-formation start to the school bus feature was a spectacular site and moved fans to their feet during the wave lap.  Thirteen buses stocked the field for the evening. Once the green flag dropped the mayhem began as the full size buses battled their way through turns one and two.

No. 77 Bernie Rhebergen was quick to take the lead on the second lap of the 15-lap feature. He held on four six laps until Dean LeClair claimed top spot on the seventh trip around and would not relinquish it.  The fierce battle and often a bump or two between ‘Bernie’ and ‘The Jerk’ LeClair left fans cheering in delight.  The driver’s solid skills kept the buses on all fours throughout the feature however numerous mechanical issues thinned the field leaving only five buses finishing the feature.  With Bernie settled into second, No. 55 Paul Quick secured third, No. 9 Derrick Vreugdenhil “Maestro” took home fourth and No. 15 Dylan Lobb fifth.

Sandercock To Victory Lane

The 35-lap Northern Late Model Association race saw the No. 57 Charlie Sandercock come from deep in mid-field to snag another win on the season.  Starting next to pole sitter No. 55 Bradley Rayner, No. 12 Kyle Sopaz jumped on the top spot on the first lap and fought hard to keep it.  A caution on the eleventh lap allowed Sandercock to turn up the heat and snap the lead.  The battle for second was a fierce one with Sopaz claiming runner up and No. 46 Brandon Mowat settling for third.  Another feature highlight saw Canadian Modified champ No. 87 Andrew Hennessy behind the wheel of Phil Potts’ No. 29 machine which he also came from behind to score fourth place.  Rayner rounded out the top five.

Hat Trick For Hennessy

After winning the first heat race of his young Canadian Modified career No. 3 Nathan Rinaldi earned pole sitting rights in the Bainer’s OilGARD ABC Taxi Triple Crown 30 lap feature.  Sticking to his line and holding off No. 48 Derrick Greig through four laps, a hard spin out cost Rinaldi the lead.  Greig moved on to take the lead in a neck and neck battle with No. 91 Kraig Handley.  Determined to keep his undefeated streak alive No. 87 Andrew Hennessy worked his way through an intense field and with three laps left he tasted satisfaction briefly only to have Greig take back what was his on the 29th lap.  With the pressure mounting as they rounded turn four a sharp turn on the inside line by Greig forced a collision with Hennessy. The tap pushed Greig out of contention and Hennessy sailed to victory lane with Handley close behind.  No. 39 Jonah Mutton clinched third, No. 12 Adam Whaley took fourth and No. 07 Curtis King fifth.

Reid Rides to Victory Lane

Polesitter No. 85 Austin Reid earned prime real estate by virtue of a heat race win and used the advantage to pace all 20 laps of the Brighton Automotive Thunder Stock feature.  Reid pushed hard to secure his first win of the 2018, leaving No. 14 Chris Dorland’s and No. 53 Wade Purchase to settle the battle for second.  Dorland prevailed just as No. 03 Justin Ramsay entered the fight to finish fourth. No. 2 Warren Mowat took home fifth place.

Flieler With Three In A Row

Driver of the month Adam Flieler held tight to his undefeated streak in his No. 11.  He sailed to victory lane taking his second Bill John’s Comp 4 Lava Clean Triple Crown race Saturday night. A false re-start by No. 0 Tyler French allowed Flieler to score the lead on the fourth lap of the 20-lap feature and he never looked back.   French settled for second. A solid run allowed No. 43 Devon Kippen to hold third place.  No. 50 Willy Bulten and No. 82 Terry Gorgevat summed up the top five.
