Another Scorcher at Brighton Speedway

For Immediate Release
May 27, 2012
By: Angie Rinaldi

With a full race card on tap to close out the month of May, track officials were anxious to begin the Campbellford Chrysler Car Load Night at Brighton Speedway.  With over a record number of car loads averaging six passengers each the stands filled up quick on the warm spring night to catch the action on and off the race track.

Those early to arrive were able to meet #57 Charlie Sandercock and #77 Caley Weese in the courtyard and pick up an Anti Bullying T Shirt that Weese Racing has on sale in support of the cause.  The goal is to sell enough of the Anti Bullying T Shirts to fill the grandstands in pink for Sunday September 2nd, Brighton Speedway’s and Weese Racing’s Official Anti Bullying Day at the track.  T shirts can be bought through Weese Racing or at the Souvenir Booth.

The first feature for the night of racing was a fierce battle in Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modified Class and would set the tone for the rest of the classes.  This 25 lap feature was an intense battle throughout.  At the front defending Champion #11 Dan Ferguson and #19 Zeke MeKeown were see sawing around the track with the #55 Jamie Marshall in the battle as well. Around half way #91 Kraig Handley, #84 Walley Alderdice, #48 Derek Greig and #15 Hector Asmar tangled on the back straight rolling Handley into the air well Greig and Asmar actually drove underneath the rolling car tearing pieces from all cars involved.  All drivers were fine although Handley made a mandatory stop at the medical station. When an unexpected series of cautions at lap 23 pulled the field together, not once, not twice but four times.  Ferguson was made to defend his slim lead on all four double file restarts and was able to hang on for the two lap dash to take his first win of the season, followed by McKeown, Marshall, #18 Kevin Scott and #1 Shawn Gregory rounding out the top five.

There was some fierce rubbing in the Quinte Septic Stinger Division that saw five disqualifications in a division that holds zero tolerance for contact.  Substituting for his daughter, Andy Fletcher in the #41 defaulted to the front of the line due to the disqualifications picking up his first win of 2012.  The stingers are back in action on June 16th.

The fiery hornets, otherwise known as the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division hit the track with 23 cars starting the feature saw #03 Justin Ramsay take his first feature win of the season, coming from 11th in the middle of pack to pass #29 Richie Sanders for the lead.  The Comp 4 Division which sees the greatest number of participants ran a good, clean, fast race to the delight of the fans.  #17 Jeff Humphrey finished fourth behind Brandon Wilkie #44 and has received the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Month honours for the most accumulated points in May well feature winner Justin Ramsey would pick up the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the week honours.

The Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models started and finished with #29 Phil Potts in the lead.  With contact between McDonald and Hunt at the start of the race and a spin by Caley Weese on lap two, the remaining 28 laps were relatively clean.  Potts would chose the inside on the lap two restart and #25 Greg Belyea would pull up along the high side.  Many would question Potts decision as the high side seemed to be the fast way around the 1/3rd mile oval.  Potts would get the hole shot and maintain the lead and with the exception of a couple of lapped cars Potts would race on to his first victory of the season.  Hard charger award to #57 Charlie Sandercock who started 11th and ended up 2nd, followed by #11 Corey Earl,  #42 Adam Nayler and Belyea.

The fifth and final feature of the night, the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks saw #72 “ The Big Smooth” take his third feature finish of the year.  Behind him the battle was for second with  #2 Leslie Mowat and #36 Mitch Rosborough to the thrill of the fans.  Rosborough would beat Mowat to the line for his seasons best second place finish, mowat would come home third followed by #35 Jerry Kimmerly and #83 Jay O’Hara to round out the top five.

June will kick off with Dibbits Excavating Fan Appreciation and Larry’s Towing Spectator One on One racing this Saturday, June 2nd starting at 7:00PM.  Don’t miss your opportunity to meet your favourite driver up close and personal.  We will also welcome all of the Coldstone Creamery Grade 3 Race to Read Participants and honour Ms. Solomon’s winning class from Northumberland Hills Public School.  The Race to Read program is an initiative encourage students to read at home.  The winning class will join Speedway Driver and Spokesman #11 Corey Earl for a pizza party before the races begin.  For more details on this and upcoming events visit www.brightonspeedway.com.

awesome racing at brighton on saturday night. well worth the drive from north of peterborough, will be making more trips there this summer. other than the great racing that kawartha puts on, not much good racing to see in our area. nice to hear drivers talking about helping each other out and real clean racing as well. great job staff and drivers!
