Second Prince Edward Island Stop Saturday for Maritime League of Legends Tour

(BEDFORD, NS – August 1st, 2018) – The Maritime League of Legends Tour will take to Oyster Bed Speedway in Oyster Bed Bridge, Prince Edward Island for the second time in 2018 this Saturday evening. The Island Coastal Services 50 marks the halfway point on the Summer for the Series as Saturday’s race will be the fifth of ten on the 2018 schedule. Racing begins on Saturday, August 4th at 6pm.

Shelby Baker (Fall River, NS) enters the Island Coastal Services 50 as the point leader on the Series on the strength of three podium finishes in four races. Baker finished second at Petty International Raceway in Round Four and was the runner-up to Craig MacDonald (Waverley, NS) in the Island ICF Incorporated 50 at Oyster Bed Speedway in June.

The gap back to second place from Baker in the standings is 23 points to Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow, NS) and the No. 12 car. Rogers has placed fifth in his first three Maritime League of Legends Tour starts and hopes to move up onto the podium and closer to Baker on Saturday.

Emily Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines, NS) sits third in the standings, one points off the No. 12 for second spot. While Meehan has battled for the point title before on the Series, she is creating a season worth of career firsts. Meehan raced to her first Tour win at Petty International Raceway two weeks ago and took her first Oyster Bed Speedway podium finish a month ago in the Island ICF Incorporated 50.

Meehan, like any other driver would on the Series, credits her early season success to her team.

“We’ve changed our mindset as a team this year,” said Meehan of the prep work for the first five races of 2018. “Adam (Meehan) is putting in a lot of hard work and I’ve been trying to get him as many wins as possible. He will be filling in for Kyle Shipley this weekend, so we are looking forward to putting two cars up front and have some fun at Oyster Bed Speedway. It is a unique and challenging track and requires you to be on the wheel at all times. The fans will see a great show Saturday night!”

Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB) and Josh Langille (Coldbrook, NS) find themselves fourth and fifth in the standings, respectively, with MacDonald and top Masters division driver Jeff Cruickshank (Hantsport, NS) not far behind. Darren Sherwood (Cambridge Narrows, NB), who drives with backing from Charlottetown’s Red Rock Harley Davidson, Kevin MacDonald (Antigonish, NS) and Kyle Shipley (Spryfield, NS) complete the top ten in the standings. As mentioned, Adam Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines, NS) will be filling in for Shipley in the No. 28 on Saturday.

A number of Prince Edward Island drivers are expected to compete for the Island Coastal Services 50 on Saturday, led by longtime Legends driver and Masters competitor Gary Dunning and Oyster Bed Speedway graduate Kyle MacEachern, both of Charlottetown. Cody Byrne (Orwell Cove) has a Legend car but struggled with mechanical issues during the Tour’s first Island stop in June. More Island based drivers are expected to toss their hat in the ring for Saturday’s fifth round but the full list is unavailable as of press time.

The 2017 edition of the Island Coastal Services 50 saw Shane Lively (Middle Sackville, NS) drive to his first Maritime League of Legends Tour podium. He and Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville, NS) have seen constant improvement over the previous two seasons and will be in the mix when the green flag drops on Saturday.

The Fleet Brake Atlantic Rookie of the Year chase sees Cormier lead Rogers by 76 points as the field races towards the halfway point in the season.

The Island Coastal Services 50 at Oyster Bed Speedway is the fifth of ten races on the 2018 season for the Maritime League of Legends Tour. Also included on the Saturday, August 4th card is the eighth round for the Maritime Pro Stock Tour as they contest a 150-lap feature and a 50-lap Oyster Bed Speedway Street Stock event. Pit gates for Legend competitors open at 1pm. Racing action gets under way with qualifying races for feature events at 6pm. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. For complete venue information, including admission prices and much more, visit OysterBedSpeedwayPEI.com.

Fans are encouraged to “like” the Maritime League of Legends Tour (@MaritimeLegends) on Facebook for their chance to win two tickets to the Farrell’s Excavating Limited 50 at Scotia Speedworld on Saturday, August 11th. For every 1,000 likes the page has on August 9th, the Series will make a draw for two tickets. For example, if the page has 3,000 likes, three pairs of tickets will be drawn for.
