OSCAAR Don Biederman Night Huge Success At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer for Flamboro Speedway - A huge crowd and great weather for the annual Don Biederman Memorial as OSCAAR were the headliner and were joined by the Budget Tire Pure Stocks and the Lucas Oil Can AM Midgets and Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway.

Matt Young and Mark Thorne led the field of Pure Stocks to green for their 20 lap feature. Three wide action made it exciting the first few laps. Gillian Hils led the first lap and was out front early. Eric Crow got sideways heading down the back stretch on lap two, rode the wall momentarily and was around bringing out the caution. Hils continued to lead and she took the white. Points leader Doug Moir was on Hils bumper pretty much throughout and was charging hard for the win. But Andy Wheller, who started dead last, 17th in the field made his way to the front and the three were side by side and bumper to bumper heading into one on the final lap. Out of two Wheller went high and Moir went low to get past Hils and several other cars followed. At the line it was Wheller first followed by Moir and Jeff Miller. Hils was left hanging and she came home sixth after leading the entire race. That's racing.

1st feature for the Pure Stocks

The Can Am Midgets were next and they were trying something different on this night. They usually run two ten lap heats and a feature but tried two features on this night like most of the other divisions that race Flamboro. Ryan Fraser led lap one and he would battle early with Adam Racine. Adrian Stahle caught the front two and they would battle for several laps. Stahle got by Fraser with a nice move on lap ten and then the cars ran in twosomes for most of the remainder of the race. Josh Shantz was in the 40 car for Mack Deman, his first race with the Midgets. He ran a couple years back but in practice the throttle stuck and they wrecked so he never got a chance to race that day. Lap fourteen, Shantz was around in 3-4 bringing out the final caution of the race. As the cars took the checkers it was Racine followed by Stahle and Fraser.

The OSCAAR Modifieds were up next for two ten lap heats. Chris Milwain led from start to finish to pick up the win. In the second heat, Aaron McLean and Gary Elliott battled up front. Elliott took the lead half way through and held off a hard charging A.J. Emms to pick up the win. Always exciting to see the "Iron Man" take a checkered flag.

The Canadian Vintage Modifieds were next with fourteen cars taking the green. Ian Burney and Jeremy Barton led the field to green with Barton leading the first lap. A few cautions early as the 57 normally driven by Steve Trendell was into the turn three wall. Nice to see my favorite CVM driver Phil Shaw back behind the wheel. His night would end early as he made contact with the turn three wall on lap two. Didn't see what happened and although the damage didn't look too bad, I heard the frame was bent and some other damage would cause the car to miss the remainder of the night. Shame for Shaw and the Trendell team as the were running close to the top of points. Mike Podd led for a short time but Jason Keen was the new leader on lap ten, followed by T.J. Marshall and they would battle to the end. Keen was first followed by Marshall and Darren Dryden.

OSCAAR Pro Midgets were next for two ten lap heats. J.R. Fitzpatrick was in Ted Greenwood's new car and sat on pole along side Brody Rickwood. Fitpatrick led the first lap but Jordan Hanna had a very fast car all night and shot past Fitzpatrick in turn one on lap four. Hanna would extend the lead to half a straightaway as the checkers fell on him on lap ten. The second heat had Steve Belfry and Gary Triska on the pole. Shawn Paul who started fifth was the leader first time past and would build a big lead. He would lead the rest of the way for the win followed by Craig Pitchell and Brent Kemps.

OSCAAR Modifieds were next for their second set of ten lap heats. A.J. Emms sat on the pole for heat three and he and Luke Gignac would break away from the rest of the field. Emms was the winner followed by Gignac and Corey Horner. The fourth heat saw John Harper lead from the pole and would lead all the way for the win followed by Cliff Hodgkinson and Tim Tolton.

The OSCAAR Super Late Models would run two features on the night. Tyler Hawn and Dario Capirchio led the field of nine to green. Hawn led lap one and led a few laps until a caution on lap four. Andrew Gressel who always does well at Flamboro was the new leader on the restart.  A caution on lap 18 wouldn't faze Gressel and he held on for the win in the first feature followed by Glenn Watson and Tyler Hawn.

1st feature for the OSCAAR Super Late Models

After intermission the Pure Stocks were up. Matt Young and Leo Labarbera were up front for this one. An early caution as the 50 of Ross Winters was around out of two got squirrely and made contact with the wall down the backstretch bringing out the caution. Eric Crow showed no ill effects from the contact he made with the wall in feature one and was out front early and got out to a nice lead and would lead all the way for the win. Clinton Kerkhof was next followed by Mark Thorne.

The Canadian Vintage Modifieds were next for their second feature. Bill Stoner and Jermy Barton were out front and Stoner would be the early leader. Brian Atkinson, who is looking to sell his two cars as he has raced since the late 70's was the new leader on lap four. He would get out to a good lead and the battle was behind him for the next four postions. As the checkers flew on a quick six minute feature it was Atkinson followed by Darren Dryden and John Karley.

2nd feature race for the Canadian Vintage Modifieds

The OSCAAR Hot Rods are still working at growing car counts for the fledgling series. They are older style cars like the Late Models that ran at Ontario race tracks in the late 60's into the 70's. Four cars were signed in but just three made it for the green. Nick Clarke, led all the way even though having some fuel issues causing the car to sputter and picked up the win. In victory lane he mentioned he was looking at building a few more cars so hope to see this group really take off!

feature race for the OSCaar Hot Rod Series

The Modifieds were next for their thirty lap feature. A.J. Emms and Gary Elliott were on the pole. Emms led early with Elliott close behind. A caution on lap five as Aaron McLean was around in1-2. Elliott was the new leader on the restart. Another caution on lap eight as McLean was around again bringing the pack back to even. Emms was the leader on the restart followed by Chris Milwain. A caution on lap 13 as Dale Reinhart got into John Harper. Harper got it restarted and went the wrong way around heading right for Reinhart and the two stopped in 3-4 nose to nose and sat there for what seemed an eternity staring each other down. As safety crews approached Harper spun around and the two lined up at the rear of the field. Nothing more came of it. Milwain was the new leader and battled Emms side by side and bumper to bumper for several laps. Milwain, Emms and Luke Gignac broke away from the pack and that s the way they came across as the checkers flew.

feature race for the OSCAAR Modifieds

The Can Am Midgets were next for their second twenty lap feature. Dominique Smith and Josh Shantz were on the pole and Shantz led lap one. Shantz continued to dominate although Darren Dryden and Adam Racine made it close at the end. The top three were Shantz, Dryden and Racine. I heard that after the race Shantz was DQ'd for being under weight. Shame for Josh, ran such a good race. This guy can win in just about anything he races.

The OSCAAR Pro Midgets were next for their 25 lap feature. Cool to see the fireworks as the cars were getting ready to take the green. B & B Fireworks is a supporter of the Pro Midgets. Kelly Summers and J.R. Fitzpatrick were on the pole and J.R. led lap one. Dan Hawn and Jordan Hanna were battling for second and third for several laps. Hanna got by Fitzpatrick heading into one on lap eight like a shot out of a gun. A caution a few laps later brought the field back to even. Hanna and Fitzpatrick battled side by side for a few laps but Hanna would retake the lead and get out to a good lead once again and would win the feature followed by Fitzpatrick and Craig Pitchell.

Flamboro Speedway, OSCAAR Pro-Midgets, July 29,2017
feature race for the OSCAAR Pro-Midgets

The final race of the night was the 25 lap feature for the OSCAAR Super Late Models.Charlie Gallant and Tyler Hawn were on the pole. Gallant would lead early and start to build a good lead. The real battle was for second through fourth as Hawn, Glenn Watson and Andrew Gressel battled nose to tail. Watson and Gressel both got past Hawn heading down the back stretch on lap 18 and thats the way they finished, Gallant followed by Watson and Gressel. Andrew Gressel was the overall winner for the Super Lates on the night for the Don Biederman Memorial Night.

That brought to a close a very exciting night of racing. Amazing fireworks closed out the show, thanks once again to OSCAAR sponsor B&B Fireworks for the great show!!  Thanks to all the fans that came out to enjoy such a beautiful late afternoon and evening of racing action.
