Cory Horner Scores OSCAAR Modified Hat Trick at Sunset Speedway
Showing speed right from the start of the event, Cory Horner scored the hat trick on Sunday at Sunset Speedway.
Duane Cinnamon won the first heat ahead of Kelly Balson, Mike Hearty, Dan Price, Jase Cornell, and Jason Keen.
Gary McLean won the second heat ahead of John Harper, Gary Elliott, David Balych, Jason Bowden, Branden Bullen, and Wally Wilson.
Cory Horner came from the back with a last lap pass to win the second heat ahead of Darryl St. Onge, Dale Reinhart, Jeff Showler, Chad Strawn, and Marshall Schrenk.
Gary Elliott won the fourth heat ahead of Hearty, McLean, Cinnamon, Balych, and Price. Price would fail to finish following mid-race contact with McLean.
Horner went for the daily double ahead of Strawn, Harper, St. Onge, Bowden, Bullen, and Wilson.
Mark Gordon won the final heat ahead of Reinhart, Keen, Showler, Schrenk, and Cornell.
Come feature time, Mike Hearty started pole ahead of Cory Horner, Duane Cinnamon, Gary Elliott, Mark Gordon, Darryl St. Onge, John Harper, Dale Reinhart, Gary McLean, Chad Strawn, Jeff Showler, David Balych, Jason Bowden, Jason Keen, Jase Cornell, Dan Price, Marshall Schrenk, Branden Bullen, and Wally Wilson.
Off the drop of the green flag, Cory Horner took the top spot ahead of Hearty, Elliott, and Gordon as Harper and McLean battled for fifth ahead of St. Onge, Keen, and Reinhart. Harper got the fifth spot on Lap 5 ahead of McLean, as Reinhart got alongside St. Onge for seventh a lap later. McLean got back alongside Harper for fifth at Lap 7 ahead of Reinhart, St. Onge, Strawn, Keen, Cinnamon, Showler, and Bowden, with Balych and Price side-by-side for 14th.
McLean would get the fifth spot on Lap 11 ahead of Harper, Reinhart, St. Onge, Strawn, and Keen. Cinnamon then got alongside Keen for 10th at Lap 13, as Strawn got alongside St. Onge a lap later. Strawn moved up into eighth on Lap 15 ahead of St. Onge, Cinnamon, Showler, Keen, and Bowden.
With 17 laps on the board, Horner led Hearty, Gordon and McLean as Harper and Elliott battled for fifth. Harper got the spot on Lap 19, with Reinhart following him through. Elliott now ran seventh ahead of Strawn, St. Onge, Cinnamon, Showler, Keen, Balych, Price, Cornell, and Bowden.
The first caution of the event would fly on Lap 23 as Schrenk went around for the spin in turn four. Under caution, McLean headed down pit road with a flat tire; Elliott would also make a pit stop at this time. With 17 laps to go, Horner led Hearty, Gordon, Harper, Reinhart, Strawn, St. Onge, Showler, Keen, Balych, Price, Cornell, Bowden, McLean, Elliott, Schrenk, Bullen, and Wilson.
The first attempt at a restart brought forth the second yellow as Gordon went for the spin going into turn one, making contact with the outside wall and ending his night, after contact from Strawn. Under the yellow flag, Elliott made another trip down pit road.
Horner got a good restart to keep the lead ahead of Hearty, Reinhart, Harper, St. Onge, Showler and Cinnamon. However, the caution would fly once again, this time on Lap 27 for Reinhart spinning Hearty in turn one. With 13 laps to go, Horner led Harper, St. Onge, Showler, Cinnamon, McLean, Keen, Price, Balych, Strawn, Bowden, Schrenk, Cornell, Hearty, Reinhart, Elliott, Bullen, and Wilson.
Horner got another good restart ahead of Harper and Shower, but it was short lived as the fourth caution flew on Lap 30 for McLean spinning St. Onge in a battle for fourth. With 10 laps to go, Horner led Harper, Showler, Cinnamon, Strawn, Price, Keen, Schrenk, Balych, Bowden, Cornell, Hearty, Reinhart, McLean, St. Onge, Elliott, Bullen, and Wilson.
The first restart brought forth the fifth caution due to Harper jumping the restart. Under the yellow flag, McLean headed down pit road, done for the event. The second attempt was no better with Balych spinning in turn three following contact with Cornell. Both drivers would be done for the event.
Choosing the top for the restart, Horner kept the lead as Strawn battled Harper for second. Strawn got the spot on Lap 32 ahead of Harper, Showler, Schrenk and Keen. The caution would then fly on Lap 33 for Bowden and Price getting together.
Horner got another good restart to keep the lead as Strawn battled Showler for second. Showler got the spot on Lap 34 ahead of Strawn, Harper, Cinnamon and Schrenk, with Keen and Hearty side-by-side for seventh. Hearty got the spot with six laps to go, getting alongside Schrenk for sixth. Hearty got the spot a lap later, with Elliott looking to follow him through. Unfortunately, the pair made contact, sending them both around for the spin.
Following the eighth caution, the race was called with just 38 of the 40 laps complete. Cory Horner picked up the win ahead of Jeff Showler, Chad Strawn, John Harper, Duane Cinnamon, Mike Hearty, Dale Reinhart, Jason Keen, Darryl St. Onge, Marshall Schrenk, Gary Elliott, Wally Wilson, Gary McLean, Dan Price, Dale Reinhart, Jason Bowden, Jase Cornell, Branden Bullen, Mark Gordon, and Kelly Balson.
The OSCAAR Modifieds will be racing at Kawartha Speedway on Friday, July 13 alongside the OSCAAR Hot Rods, Ontario Legends Series who will be partaking in the Canadian Nationals, and Bone Stocks.
