Saint John, NB, Canada 6/15/10- Not since the PASS South event on April 3rd at the Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, North Carolina had the Lonnie Sommerville Racing team rolled out their #23 A.E. McKay Builders Chevy Impala for competition. Their return to racing this weekend at their home track of Speedway 660 for the PASS North tour’s only trip to Canada was just two positions away from a perfect race as Lonnie would bring home the third place hardware.

The finish, by Sommerville, was the highest among the eight Canadian locals hoping to fend off the American invaders. While the plan to become the first Canadian winner on the PASS North tour in quite some time didn’t go as planned, the solid podium finish was still a great way to start the 2010 Canadian racing season.

“This third place finish tonight is bitter-sweet because every year this is a race I really want to win and we’ve come up just short the last couple of years. The top five cars were all pretty close together in my opinion, maybe Johnny (Clark) had a car that was just a bit better than everyone else so that’s probably why he was the winner at the end of the night,” stated Sommerville after the event.

The 200 lap event, divided into two 100 lap segments, produced some tight hard-nosed racing with a lot of give and take style racing among the leaders making a good show for those who had bought a ticket. Over the first thirty-five laps Sommerville was able to make his way into the top five with ease. It would take the remaining amount of laps however to make it to the fourth position at the event’s halfway break. The five-minute break allowed the Sommerville camp to change two right side tires, add fuel, and make a small chassis adjustment in hopes of giving their A.E. McKay Builders/Pub’s Bottle Exchange Chevy that extra bit of grip to have a shot at the win.

The final half of the event went clean and green with the racing among the leaders and lap cars becoming intense at times. Clark was able to pull away out front due to the advantage of the move-over flag for lapped vehicles. This left Sommerville battling with Cassius Clark for a chance at the runner-up position in the closing laps, but without some type of contact or mistake on Clark’s part, it was not to be, forcing Sommerville to cross the line third.

Next up for the Lonnie Sommerville Racing team will be back at Speedway 660 in Geary, NB on July 10th for the Max 1 Advanced Synthetic Oil 150 “best of the best” pro stock event.
