OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO, CANADA
NIGHT BEFORE THE NATIONALS
PRESENTED BY BURGER BARN
TOTAL ENTRIES – 119

———————————————————–
NIGHT BEFORE THE NATIONALS 360 SPRINT CARS (60 entries)
— The first race on the schedule for the evening was a makeup A-Feature for the Empire Super Sprints tour which was postponed by weather on August 5. Jordan Poirier and Paul Kinney brought the 24 car field to the green flag after Steve Poirier dropped off the front row with brake issues. Jordan Poirier and Kinney exchanged slide jobs twice over the opening three laps before Kinney emerged with the lead.

Kinney was in traffic 10 laps in, and holding off Ohsweken regular Dylan Westbrook at the same time. The race was slowed on lap 12 when Dave Dykstra coasted to a stop with a flat tire. Following the restart, Shawn Donath got by Westbrook for second, while Kinney stayed up front.

Donath took the lead from Kinney in turn three on lap 19, and the two drivers continued to battle in traffic. Kinney retook the lead coming to the white flag, and held off Donath to secure his first career win at Ohsweken. While he didn’t start the race, Steve Poirier had already locked up his seventh career Empire Super Sprints championship.

— Jared Horstman led the first of the Twin 15 lap Night Before The Nationals A-Features to the green flag. Dylan Westbrook quickly jumped up to second, while Bryan Howland and Steve Poirier battled for third.

The race was slowed twice, on laps 7 and 10. Westbrook took the lead from Horstman after each restart, but the latter driver consistently maintained his pace and retook the lead. Horstman went back to the outside lane on lap 11, and took the lead from Westbrook for good one lap later after a side-by-side race for the top spot.

Westbrook and Poirier swapped the runner-up spot several times over the final two laps before Poirier came away with that position ahead of Westbrook. Horstman earned a guaranteed starting spot in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Feature with the Night Before The Nationals victory.

— Mark Smith lined up third for the second Twin 15, but wasted no time darting to the lead past pole-sitter Brandon Wimmer in turn one. Yan Bilodeau quickly drove to second, while Jordan Thomas raced into third.

Smith dominated the race, leading by a full straightaway before Bilodeau reeled him in while they raced through traffic. Smith wouldn’t be stopped though, as he navigated through the traffic without incident to claim his guaranteed starting spot in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Feature.

— Empire Super Sprints champion Steve Poirier led all 12 laps of the Dave McLeod Memorial Shootout for his second win of the weekend, following a heat race win earlier in the night. Poirier stayed ahead of NRA Sprint Invaders champion Jared Horstman and Ohsweken Speedway champion Mitch Brown to claim the victory.

— Yan Bilodeau started at the front of the 13 lap Kevin Ward Jr. Young Stars Challenge, and held off Southern Ontario Sprints champion Dylan Westbrook for the victory. The youngest starter in the race was 15-year-old Paulie Colagiovanni, while the oldest was 21-year-old Devin Caron.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS (17 entries)
Holly Porter set a new time trial track record and lined up on the pole for the final full length Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car race of the season. Second starter Mack DeMan challenged Porter for the lead at the halfway mark as he cut into a significant lead which Porter had built.

A pair of cautions slowed the race in the latter half of the 20 lap affair, and Porter proved strong enough to hold off Mack DeMan for the win. Jesse McDonald drove to a strong 3rd place finish, followed by Shone Evans and Ryan Hunsinger.

Mike Thorne was the only one of the four eligible drivers to accept the “602 Challenge”, and charged from the back of the field to finish 6th.
