Sunset Question?
« on: May 21, 2008, 10:39:51 AM »
Well, this saturday I originally planed to go to Barrie or go see dirt racing at Brighton, but there both about 90 mins away....and I have to work untill 6:00pm(closing) so by the time I get on the road will be about 6:15, closits tracks for me would be Mosport or PTBO..but both the tracks are struggling with car counts..and I want to see some better racing this weekend, and the next closest track is Sunset.

so my question is(since I am somewhat unfamiliar with sunset's format) I will get there around 7:15-7:20...how much racing will I actually miss? I know it starts at 7:00..but whats with the pre-race qualifying? is that like heats?     with the way gas prices are now..I don't want to go somewhere and miss a good bit of the show.

Thanks

pre race qualifying is just one round of four cylinder heats and one round of four fun heats

youll more than likely see a whole lot of racing, even if you arrive at 7 20 or so

Ok, Thanks guys!

If I miss a couple of heats that's fine...I just was making sure I was not gonna miss a good chunk of the racing.

lol....so, they race qualifiers starting at 6:30...but they dont tell fans to come till 7?...do these guys part of the show??
so anyone sponsoring these guys gets no exposure to fans and they race with no fans watching???
that is the weirdest thing i've heard of.
when we do that at Flamboro....its called hotlaps...and our hotlaps are as rough as a race sometimes.

Spencer mentioned....

and I reply...

I was hoping I didn't have to go there. Pre race qualifiers are a way of getting the first round of heats out of the way before the racing program starts. It is the first round of heats for 4 cylinders and 4 funs and meant to get the evenings events over with sooner (which can be a good thing). I do notice that they choose to not run Thunder or LLM though.

It is not mentioned on a 7:00 start night that the actual racing starts at 6:15 because if somebody misses that start time they will be inclined to say the heck with it since they are running late and go to BSW otherwise they could just have a policy to start racing at 6:00 as a normal evening.

I have had friends, family and sponsors come to see me race and miss my first set of heats only to catch my second heats then leave at intermission because they were cold and not that big of a race fan anyway.

As far as it being advertised take a look at the sign outside of Sunset it will read start time of 7:00 and in fact as of last night when I was there was advertising last weeks race. Take a look at the website at www.sunsetspeedway.ca and it will read... "Don't miss the first School Bus Race of the season this Saturday May 24 ... Racing starts at 7:00pm" right at the top of the home page.

It does get mentioned on the schedule at top of page reading... ***"Pre-race qualifiers at 5:15 for 6:00 starts and 6:15 for 7:00 starts". When there were ads on The New VR there was NO mention of "pre-race qualifiers".

As far as Spencer mentioning it I don't really hear the PA system in my car on track or in the pits but knowing Spencer I am sure he makes sure people know other than that it is Sunset's little secret.

LOL...still weird to me...why not just run all the pre race qualifiers for everyone before hand...then have features start at 7pm...seems like crappin on the low buck guys and their sponsors too me...man i'm glad i know this now, i would feel ripped off if i missed ANY racing after driving all that way.

Couldn't start pre-race qualifiers for everybody before 7 as it takes 45 minutes for 4 cylinder and 4 fun to do theirs and we do have 2 rounds of heats for all divisions so pre-race for all would have to start at 4:30 or 5:00.

I say just make a stand and say we are the track that starts at 6:00 and gets you outta here earlier so your family can be home and kids tucked in bed by 9:30.

2 rounds of heats?...i use to like that at Flammy, only because i liked to race as much as possible...but now with gas prices, admissions and everything else going thru the roof, i appreciate the one set of heats and consi...the consi is like a mini feature all its own for the minis at Flammy now. I'm feeling better about Flammy treatment to minis...lol. I posted on chat site too see what other drivers think.

I like the 2 rounds of heats because it seems fair. When you draw a number and start at the back of the pack you know on your second set of heats you will get inverted to the front.

I always wondered about the guys that make it in the consi and have to turn around and run the main feature. What if you didn't bring enough gas, what if you have pushed you car too hard and what about those hot hot nights and having to get back into a 200 degree car.

With a consi thought I like the idea of being able to be a leader amongst the slower cars if all the cars in the main feature are fast you might not ever get the feeling of holding a checker flag.

with a consi you usually end up running with other non qualifiers and have a better chance of a checker, i think....and with the draw, you usually have a few top guys to deal with both heats.
i just read on another board that the fun fours run before racing "officially starts", with no fans and last, at nites end, when most fans have left...lolol...and they have the most cars in a class too?
