Tyler Hawn Scores Hat Trick in OSCAAR Hot Rod Series Season Opener

If the season opener is any indication, it’s going to be a great year of competitive OSCAAR Hot Rod Series racing. At the end of the first event, though, a familiar face was in victory lane as Tyler Hawn scored the win.

Tyler Hawn won the first heat ahead of Dan Archibald, Douglas Fischer, Steve Book, Lance Foster, and Derek Henderson. For both Foster and Henderson, mechanical issues kept them from contending.

Billy Alderson Jr. won the second heat ahead of Brad Martin, Jeremy McLean, Dan Price, and Bill Clarke.

Tyler Hawn went for the daily double ahead of Alderson Jr., Henderson, Foster, and Price.

Dan Archibald won the fourth heat ahead of Clarke, McLean, Book, Fischer, and Martin.

Come feature time, it’d be Douglas Fischer leading the field to green ahead of Bill Clarke, Jeremy McLean, Billy Alderson Jr., Dan Archibald, Tyler Hawn, Steve Book, Lance Foster, Dan Price, Derek Henderson, and Brad Martin.

The feature started off with a battle side-by-side for the lead between Clarke and Alderson Jr., with Alderson putting the No. 18 Billy’s Speed Shop Varney / Reliance Printing Walkerton / Hanover Snacks in Durham / Home Hardware Durham Chevelle out front on Lap 2. Hawn was then able to slip up into second, with Archibald taking the third spot on Lap 4.

Clarke now ran fourth ahead of Fischer, Foster, McLean, Book, Martin, Henderson and Price. Martin continued his climb from the back, getting alongside Book for eighth at Lap 8, completing the pass a couple laps later. He was then able to get by McLean for seventh and pass him at Lap 13.

The shuffling continued all throughout the field with Fischer and Foster battling for fifth, with Foster initially taking spot. However, trouble for Foster brought out the race’s lone caution, dropping him to the rear.

The restart saw a close battle for the lead between Hawn and Alderson, with Hawn taking the top spot shortly after. Tyler Hawn then led the final laps en route to putting the No. 2 Fox’s Bakery and Deli / 400 Transmission / TSS Top Shops / Watson Garage Baumont into victory lane.

“The car was a little tight, so when he chose the inside, I’m like, ‘Perfect, I can use the outside to get a run-off,’” Hawn said in victory lane. “I was working for that. There’s a lot of motor in that thing. I was giving it everything I had.”

Alderson and Archibald spent the final laps side-by-side, battling door-to-door for second, with Billy Alderson Jr. just edging Dan Archibald at the line. Brad Martin finished fourth, followed by Bill Clarke, Douglas Fischer, Steve Book, Jeremy McLean, Lance Foster, Dan Price, and Derek Henderson.

Of note, Art Rodgers showed up to take part in the show as well, but was sidelined following a blown motor in practice.

The OSCAAR Hot Rods will be back in action at Sunset Speedway on May 19 and 20 as part of the track’s Spring Velocity. They will be joined by both the OSCAAR Modifieds and OSCAAR Pro Sprints. Event details, as well as pre-event ticket sales, can be found at http://www.sunsetspeedway.ca.
