Girl Power On Display On Memorial Night At Flamboro Speedway
By Randy Spencer for Flamboro Speedway - It was the annual Memorial Night at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway and the girls were out to show they are just as capable of winning as the boys are. Stock car racing as been primarily a male sport over time but without a doubt Flamboro has had its share of very good female racers over the years. Courtney Scott and Gillian Hils proved they are very capable racers picking up feature wins here Saturday Night.
Racing got underway at 6pm with 2-1/2 features off the top from last Saturdays show that were postponed due to wet track conditions. The Mini Stocks were first and they got in 9 laps before the rain hit last week and that's where we picked up. On the restart, Shawn Taylor was up front and he led from the green flag until the end and would win the first feature of the night.

Super Stocks were next with Carson Nagy and Jaeger McMaster on the pole. Nagy would lead early with McMaster close behind. They raced that way for seven laps until McMaster got into Nagy causing a spin and the caution. That would put the leaders to the back and Brandon McFerran and Nick Troback would take their place as the new leaders. Troback led from the restart and another caution on lap 12 as McMaster slowed and came to a stop just off the racing surface on the front stretch. McFerran was the leader this time and he held off the pack and picked up the win.
Late Models were up with Gary Elliott and Blair Wickett leading the field to green. Wickett led lap one but Shawn Chenoweth was the leader the next time by. The top two runners started to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Jeff Ruddy brought out a caution as he went around in 1-2 on lap 17 and by this time Billy Schwartzenberg had joined the party at the front. On the restart it was Chenoweth and Schwartzenberg and they would have an ongoing feud all night. The two broke away but Chenoweth would hold off Schwartzenberg for the first Late Model feature of the night.
We then got into our regular program with Pure Stocks hitting the track for the first of their two 20 lap features on the night. Doug Moir was pole along side Leo Labarbera. Moir is having an outstanding season and going into the night he had fairly good lead over the second place car of Mark Thorne. Moir has 1621, Thorne 1573 and Courtney Scott is having a very strong year and is third with 1552. Moir led lap one but it wasn't long before Courtney Scott was on a roll. She would be the new leader next time by and started to build a nice lead and won quite handily. Great to see Courtney having such a great year. Good for her and all those young female race fans out there to have someone to look up to. Also nice third place finish by Chris Pendlebury, he looked pretty happy as he crossed the line!
Mini Stocks were next and Kaitlyn Wallace and Erik Dalla Riva were out front. Wallace in her rookie season is having a strong run as well. She sits in sixth in points just two behind Mike Hooper for fifth. Dalla Riva, who's experience is road racing and the like hasn't taken too long adapting to the oval track. He has picked up several feature wins this summer after picking up the car from Billy Schwartzenberg. He would lead lap one but a caution would bring the field back to even. On the restart it was Jake Gilbert taking the lead and he wouldn't look back and was the winner. Russ Aicken still leads points going in, 1411 to 1367 for Allie Ditner but he had a DNF as his problems seem to be mounting ever since he wrecked in early August.
The Ontario Pro Challenge were in town for their final appearance of the 2017 campaign. They are one of the last remaining divisions to still run heats and one feature. In heat one, Larry Majuery and Mike Johnston were pole. Johnston led lap one and battled throughout the ten laps with the 5 car of Paul Klager but Johnston held off Klager to pick up his first win.
Super Stocks were next and this division is at a dead heat going in. Nick Troback and Brandon McFerran are tied at 1313 points a piece. Troback was pole with Carson Nagy to his outside. Troback got out to a good lead and would win going away. McFerran was fifth in this one.
Late Models were next and Blair Wickett and Hudson Nagy led a twelve pack of cars to green for their first 25 lap feature. Wickett led lap one. A caution on lap three as the 14 car of Keith Temple was slowing an came to a stop on the front stretch. On the restart Billy Schwartzenberg was the leader. He started to build a sizeable lead and it was a full straight away at one point. Chenoweth, Wickett and Chad Corcoran were battling for second through fourth. A caution on lap 21 and the 88 of Scott Gibson and Jeff Ruddy were involved in turn two. Not what Schwartzenberg wanted, the filed was back to even. As the field took the green, looked like maybe some contact caused Wickett to get loose, he tagged the wall and turned back into traffic and clipped the 02 of Mark Burbridge. Wickett lost the nose of his car and Burbridge was around tagging the wall on his left side. Once again contact on the restart and Schwartzenberg was around as Shawn Chenoweth was into him. Schwartzenberg was facing the wrong way in turn one and as Chenoweth made his way around again Schwartzenberg started to pull away causing Chenoweth to stop. On the restart Schwartzenberg was behind Chenoweth. One lap past but as the cars were going through1-2, Schwartzenberg was into Chenoweth and a big smoke show was the result as Chenoweth was around. Race director Doug Leonard had had enough and told both drivers to take it to the pits. Heading into the night, Chenoweth lead Schwartzenberg by nine points. On the restart, just six cars remained for the final six laps. Chad Corcoran was the new leader and he held on until the checkers for the victory.

The last race before intermission was the second heat for the Ontario Pro Challenge. Rick Seeley and Peter Hattin were out front for this ten lapper. Hattin led early and would continue until lap eight when Kyle Batty got past down the back stretch and would pick up the heat win.
We then went to out intermission and the Highway Men Car Club were on hand with a fine display of classic cars. They would take several laps around the oval, many doing burn outs and showing off their beautiful classic cars. We then honored the many drivers and crew members that left us too soon and the names were read allowed by Gary Colling for our annual Memorial Night.

As we got back to racing, Pure Stocks were led to green by John Ditner and Matt Fraser. Fraser led lap one but a caution the next lap as Mark Dennis was around in two. Ditner led the restart but three wide action the next time by gave the lead to Mark Thorne. He would lead until lap seven when Gillian Hils got past through 3-4. Hils started to build a nice lead in no time but a caution would even it up. Hils led on the restart and once again started to build a good lead. Girl Power was strong in this one as Hils came cross the line first with Courtney Scott coming second. At the end of the night, Moir was leading in points with 1718 but the race for second shrank as Scott closed the lead on Thorne from 21 points to now just 7.

2nd feature for the Pure Stocks
Mini Stocks were next with Jonathan Ayrton and David Gallinger on the pole. Gallinger led lap one. Before long, race one winner Shawn Taylor was battling Gallinger. Taylor started eighth in the field but was side by side with Gallinger as the two would head down the back stretch. As they came out of four and made their way down the front stretch, Taylor would take the lead. Gallinger wouldn't let Taylor too far out of his sights and the two broke way. A fine race for third and fourth was shaping up as Ayrton and Mike Gilmour were battling hard. Gilmour moved to third on lap 12 and a "gaggle" of five cars made it exciting. As the race progressed Taylor once again started to break away and won handily. Great to see David Gallinger come home second in this one!!
Super Stocks were next and this one saw Brad Collison and Brandon McFerran on the pole. Collison led lap one. They would battle close early on but McFerran got a little too close on lap ten and Collison was around. That would make the two lead cars Nick Troback and Chris Howse. These two have battled hard all year and tonight was no different. A side by side battle would soon see Troback take the lead and hold off the pack for the win. Tied going in, Troback would hold a 12 point lead when all was said and done on this night. Just a note in this one, Brad Collison's spin to the infield saw him take out one of those little trees on the grass on the front stretch. These were planted by the Waterloo Regional Kart Club, namely Brad's father, Flamboro Speedway Hall of Famer Jim Collison. Brad was joking later about it and I know that all of us in the booth were wondering when that would happen. Took quite a few years but it happened. Sure Jim will "nurse" it back to health. Not sure what we will do several years down the road when those trees maybe bigger than some of the race cars out there.

first feature race of the night
Late Models were next and I'm sure most like myself were eagerly anticipating the resumption of the fireworks from the last race that saw Billy Schwartzenberg and Shawn Chenoweth sent to the pits. Jeff Ruddy and Hudson Nagy were pole for this one and Chenoweth would start fourth with Schwartzenberg fifth. Ruddy led lap one. Mark Burbridge took the green but retired to the pits after taking one lap. Ruddy was around through 1-2 on lap four as Chad Corcoran made contact with him. Chenoweth was the leader on the restart. Another caution on lap nine saw the cars back to even and on the restart the battle would be back as Chenoweth and Schwartzenberg battled. Chenoweth would continue to lead as Schwartzenberg battled hard with Corcoran. Chad got past Billy for second and the three would battle close for the remainder with Chenoweth picking up the win. When all was said and done at the end of the night, Chenoweth led Schwartzenberg by 13 points.
Last race of the night saw the feature for the Ontario Pro Challenge. Mike Johnston and Paul Klager led the field of eleven cars to green. A tight pack entered 1-2 on lap one and it appeared (on the video) that the 8 of Peter Hattin slid up the track and tagged the 83 of Tim Batty causing him to hit the wall. Rick Seeley had to let off the gas, tagged the wall and the 88 got sideways as did the 38 of Kyle Batty. The 3 of Dean Pronovost was around and the 4 of Darren Dryden stopped to avoid. On the restart, Klager was the leader. Tim Norris who has owned Flamboro over the past decade was up to second on lap three. A few laps later Norris took the lead through 3-4. Darren Dryden with his first time racing with the OPC started dead last and by lap eleven was up to third. A caution on lap 22 as Larry Majuery slowed off the surface to the grass. Norris led once again and would not look back as he led to the checkers for the feature win. Good job Darren Dryden coming in second!!

That brought to a close another very exciting night of racing at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. Congratulations to all the winners, especially the double winners, Shawn Taylor, Shawn Chenoweth and Nick Troback!!
Just two night of regular racing left, don't miss the action and the exciting points battles to see the champions crowned in two weeks on September 23rd. Join us this Saturday, September 16th for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series for a 100 lap main event. They will be joined by the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the Budget Tire Pure Stocks, the Pro Four Modifieds and the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds. The Pro Fours and CVM's will run an extra feature from the rainout on September 2nd.
Pits open at 4pm, front gates at 5pm with time trials for the LOSC at 630pm. Features to follow.
