Sky Financial Series – Lakeview Insurance 150

It was literally a race against the weather Saturday night at Wyant
Group Raceway.  The forecast looked good all day but as we approached
intermission about 7:30 a quick check of weather radar showed a system
was building and we could expect rain in the Saskatoon area in the next
couple of hours.  Officials made a quick decision to change the schedule
around, just in case.

Drivers were informed of the changes, which would move the super late
model Lakeview Insurance 150 to the first feature after the
intermission.  This is a fixed length race, while the others on the
schedule are variable to suit schedule, weather and yes, car count.

With he starting grid for the Sky Financial Series super late model
Lakeview Insurance 150 having been set earlier in the day, the cars
rolled out with Tim Kammer on the pole.  While Trent Seidel and Matthew
Shirley had earned the inside and outside pole positions through the
heat races, that pesky dice roll of 12 inverted almost the entire field.

Kelly Admiraal and Rob Janzen, as the top qualifiers, had already
decided to take the Three Rivers Challenge of $1,000 for winning the
race from the back.  With those two out of the equation and the dice
roll of twelve, Andy Clewes was the only car not affected by the
inversion.  Tim Kammer would have the pole, with Ian Admiraal on the
outside.

#04 of Tim Kammer showed the way around the first couple of laps, Ian
Admiraal took over at the front in lap three, leading the field around
until Jim Gaunt decided he wanted a turn in lap 22.  By this time Rob
Janzen and Kelly Admiraal had worked their way up to 5th and 10th.

The field was so competitive and the racing so tight, the first car
didn’t go a lap down until lap 41, when Jim Gaunt cleared by Andy
Clewes.  By this time Janzen had moved up to second, while Kenny Heintz
and Matthew Shirley battled for third.  Kevin Dyck, Kelly Admiraal and
Trent Seidel were all battling for the fifth spot.

A close call in lap 22 as the #55 of Jim Gaunt couldn’t slow up going
through corners one and two, getting into the #9 of Ian Admiraal sending
his car squirrelly and into the water and mud behind corner two.  But he
managed to pull it through and it wasn’t until lap 67 that drivers saw
the first caution flag fly when the #88 of Jason Gervais spun out on his
own.

For the restart it was #55 on the pole.  At the cone, Dave Bone and Tim
Kammer both chose the inside line.  #62 Kenny Heintz was the first car
to choose the outside, putting him on the outside pole beside Jim Gaunt.
Ian Admiraal was the Lucky Bastard on this first caution.

Heintz got a jump on Gaunt at the green flag, but it was Jim back in the
lead as they came around to complete lap 68.  While Kenny was trying to
keep up with Jim, a battle was brewing behind and Kelly Admiraal was now
working on Janzen’s back door.

Admiraal dispatched of Janzen fairly quickly and set his sights on
Heintz.  Kelly finally got by Heintz for lap 80 and was chasing down Jim
Gaunt as the second caution of the race came in lap 81 when the #88 of
Jason Gervais spun out #9 Ian Admiraal.  Jason tapped out, giving
Admiraal his spot back in the line.  The #38 of Dave Bone was the Lucky
Bastard in this second caution.

This time with Jim Gaunt on the pole Kelly Admiraal took the outside
line at the cone.  Admiraal got the jump on Gaunt and took over the lead
of the race coming in to finish lap 82.  Admiraal continued to lead with
Jim in pursuit, but Jim soon found his mirror full of #70 Seidel.  The
parade of #8x, #55, #70 continued when the third and final caution of
the race flew in lap 100 as the #62 of Kenny Heintz had a tire go down,
sending him up the race track in corner two.

This time it was Gaunt who surprised everyone by following Admiraal down
the inside line at the cone, giving Seidel the outside pole beside
Admiraal and putting #10 Kevin Dyck in the second row beside Gaunt.  The
#12x of Aaron Deagnon was the Lucky Bastard recipient on this caution.

This time it was Seidel getting the jump and taking over the lead for
the next 20 laps.  At this point you could see Trent’s car fading and
the #8x of Kelly Admiraal easily took over the lead.

#55 Jim Gaunt also slipped by Seidel with 10 laps remaining.  Trent
would hang on, bringing the #70 Elance Steel Camaro in for a third place
finish.  The #55 Sky Financial, The Mortgage Centre Impala SS of Jim
Gaunt was second and finishing first was the #8 Swan Rentals Chevrolet
of Kelly Admiraal who picked up his first Sky Financial Super Late Model
Series win of the year, taking home the checkered flag in the Lakeview
Insurance 150.

In other racing action, Blake Erb continued his quest towards the
Saskatoon Shrine Club Sask Legends championship, winning the feature in
his #21 The Flaman Group 1934 Ford Coupe.  #19 of Greg Slater was a
close second and #27 Country Style BBQ 1927 Ford Coupe of Jody Stewart
was third.

In the Law Enforcement Bandolero division, Tyler Emond made the trip
with his dad from Leduc and easily brought the #18 to the checkered
flag.  The #47 of Cale Heilman was second and Dakota Wollf piloting the
#21 was third.

In the Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stock Division, running twin features
tonight to make up for the August 3rd rainout Cole Nixey in the #23 33rd
Street Automotive Neon edged out the #4 of Shawn Magee.  Jim Barnsley
was third in the #41 Streetwise Service Neon.

In the second Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stock feature, this time Shawn
Magee’s #4 Streetwise Service Honda Prelude edged out #23 Cole Nixey,
with #41 Jim Barnsley taking up third.

By the way, there was a couple of light sprinkles through the features.
The rain started about 9:48pm, with about 8 laps remaining in the final
feature of the night.  We made it!!

We’ll be taking the long weekend off with racing action returning on
Saturday September 10 with the annual Martensville Valley A&W Street
Stock Invitational.  Along with the street stocks, the Tiger Automotive
Pro Trucks will be here with a twin feature, the Law Enforcement
Bandoleros are here and the Saskatoon Shrine Club Sask Legends take to
the track with their second Mac’s series race of the year.

Racing is Saturday, September 10.  Front gates open at 4:30 with the
first green flag at 6:05pm.  Don’t forget, there will be action and car
displays throughout the day in Martensville along Centennial Drive.
