Chad McGlynn Wins 100 Lap Late Model Sportsman Race At Flamboro

By Randy Spencer (Flamboro Speedway PR) - After a rain out last weekend, the wetter and cooler than normal spring seemed to want to continue the trend on this night at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. The start of the race program was delayed as the track had to be dried. A few other short delays as a few showers would pass throughout the evening.

The Pure Stocks hit the track just before 7pm for the first feature of the night. Ross Winters Jr. and Eric Crow would lead the field to green with Winters leading lap one. On lap three the 13 car of Matt Fraser had a flat and retired to the infield. On the restart, the red flag came out when a fire under the hood of Winters car and he retired to the pits. A father and son duo would be out front and started to break away from the rest of the field. Mark and Wayde Thorne were the class of the pack and would soon be joined by the 90 car of Andy Wheller. They raced for several laps bumper to bumper but a lead change would take place on lap 14 as the cars headed down the back stretch. Wayde Thorne got by Mark and was followed by Wheller. As the cars crossed the line it was Wayde followed by Wheller and Mark Thorne.

The Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks were next with Matt Young and Michael Kenny up front. Kenny led lap one and would hold the lead until lap seven when Shawn Taylor took over the lead through one and two. Lapped traffic would become an issue half way as Russ Aicken moved up to Taylor's bumper and would get past when Taylor once again lost power and was off the pace. Aicken was the new leader and was followed closely by Jake Gilbert in the 03. They would race bumper to bumper until the 45 of Kaitlyn Wallace spun down the back stretch bringing out the caution. On the restart, Gilbert took the advantage and would be the new leader and although Aicken made a couple of attempts to retake the lead, Gilbert would hold on for the win.

The Ontario Pro Challenge series made their 2017 debut with a ten lap heat race. Peter Hattin led lap one and he would battle the 83 of Tim Batty. Tim Norris started to make a move and he would get by Batty to take over second. As the checkers flew it was Hattin followed by Norris and Batty.

The Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets also made their season debut with the first of two heats. Ryan Fraser led lap one. Adrian Stahle would get by Fraser in one-two on lap three and led the rest of the way picking up the win.

The second heat would see Adam Racine lead all the way to pick up the win. He was at the track early as he raced with Waterloo Regional Kart club and then raced a car borrowed from Mack Deman since his wasn't ready.

The Lucas Oil Sportsman series had eleven cars signed in for the first race of the year. Just ten cars took laps as the 88 car of Scott McPhail blew a tire in practice hitting the wall and would start scratch in the 100 lapper. With the "green" track, the LOSC track record of 16.005 set last September would likely not go down. Although it came close, Chad McGlynn set the fast lap at 16.251 and would take the provisional pole followed by Alvin McNichol, Brandt Graham, Donny Beatty and Doug Cathcart. The top five would change however as the Fast Five draw would take place prior to the start of the feature.

The Pure Stocks hit the track for their second feature. The 31 of Brandon McFerran and the 16 of Mark Thorne were called for jumping the green. McFerran was the leader and built up at least a ten car lead on Wayde Thorne. Lapped traffic came into play but wasn't a big issue and Thorne was gaining and soon was on McFerran's bumper. With a few laps to go a caution came out for debris and the two cars that jumped the original green were put back two spots each. On the restart for the green white checker, Wayde Thorne was the new leader followed by Clinton Kerkhof in the 78 and McFerran. The white came out and as the cars rounded four, McFerran had a bumper on Kerkoff and that's the way it finished, Wayde Thorne winning both features, followed in this one by McFerran and Kerkhof.

The Ontario Pro Challange were next for their second ten lap heat. Ken Lillycrop led lap one. A caution on lap two brought the filed back to a restart and Rick Seeley was the new leader. He would continue to lead, held off the field and picked up the win followed by Lillycrop and Tim Norris.

The Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks were next for feature number two on the night. Mike Hooper led lap one. An early caution as Hooper and Rick Robinson were around. On the restart, David Gallinger was the new leader. The 03 of Jake Gilbert brought out the red flag and on the restart, Gallinger and Jake Watson would battle for the lead with Watson taking over first place. Another caution came out on lap nine and on the restart, Russ Aicken was the leader and led the rest of the way picking up another feature victory in the early season followed by Watson and Gallinger.

The Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets hit the track with twelve cars taking the green. As always, their salute to the fans as "Only the best go four abreast".  Veteran Barry Dunn led lap one. He would lead until lap six when Adam Racine was the new leader. A caution two laps later as Steve Murdock and Dunn spun out of two. Racine continued to the lead as the race wore on. The win looked in the bag but 2016 champion Mack Deman started to gain and with two laps to go he was on the bumper of Racine. On the final lap, the two were battling through three and four and were side by side heading for the line. As they crossed it was Racine by a tire length as he picked up the win followed by Deman and Ryan Fraser.

As the cars took the checkers it was Norris followed by Batty and Seeley.

The final race of the night it was the 100 lap feature for the Lucas Oil Sportsman. The fast five draw took place as the top five in qualifying drew for the starting order. Prior to the draw it was Chad McGlynn, Alvin McNicol, Brandt Graham, Donny Beatty and Doug Cathcart. Alvin McNicol drew the pole followed by Beatty, Cathcart, Graham and McGlynn. McNicol would lead lap one. Brandt Graham would be on McNicol's bumper for several laps and the two battled hard. McNicol got loose a few times but continued to lead. Lap 46 saw fan favorite Kevin Gallant slow and retire for the night a couple laps later. McNicol and Graham would trade the lead a few times. On lap 64 a caution as McNicol spun in 1-2. Chad McGlynn was the new leader on the restart followed closely by Graham. With 25 laps to go McGlynn and Graham had a half track lead on the rest of the field. McNicol and Cathcart battled side by side for third and fourth and would trade that spot back and forth throughout. Graham would regain the lead on lap 81 as he got by McGlynn in 3-4. McGlynn would retake the lead on lap 91 and managed to hold off the hard charging Graham and pick up the win. The top five, McGlynn, Graham, McNicol, Cathcart and Brent Wheller came home fifth.
