Rain Wins Out At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer for Flamboro Speedway - Light rain fell on and off for most of the day but it cleared in time for racing at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway on Graybar Night. The end grandstand and the turn one tower were both filled and they were hoping for an exciting night of racing action. Thanks to everyone at Graybar, a great supporter of Flamboro Speedway. The Grisdale Late Models were on hand along with the Ray’s Auto Centre & Towing Super Stocks, the Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the Pro Four Modifieds the Ontario Pro Challenge and the King of the Hill spectator races at intermission. Also a special attraction, Kevin Gallant vs Brandon McFerran.

The first race of the night was for the Mini Stocks. Kaitlyn Wallace and Russ Aicken sat on the pole and Aicken led lap one. After a rough end to the night last week, Aicken was looking to turn it around. Aicken led Allie Ditner by 41 points going into the night. He built a nice lead by Jake Gilbert was starting to catch Aicken. The two would battle for several laps and at one point were approaching a lapped car. They split, one high and one low and both got a bit squirrely but both managed to keep it straight and raced on. A caution as Erik Dalla Riva was around and a lap later Kaitlyn Wallace  was around out of two and that brought a caution. Tyler Mayhew tried to hit the brakes to avoid and they gave way and he tagged the wall and was off on the hook. On the restart the leaders battled once again, door to door. On the final lap, they battled door to door but as they went through three and four Gilbert got a little lose and Aicken came across the line first. Further back in the pack, a pack of cars were involved in a crash with a few cars as they came out of four, David Gallinger, Dalla Riva and Michael Kenny received some damage. Too bad to see Kenny with the amount of damage he received to the car. After over heating problems Kenny seemed to have the car running good and now the future is uncertain for him he tells me after racing. Gallinger too has had a rough go of late. The winner was Aicken followed by Shawn Taylor who got by Gilbert who got lose, Gilbert third and Rodney Rutherford and Allie Ditner rounding out the top five.

Next out was the first heat race for the Ontario Pro Challenge. Tim Shanahan led lap one but Bryan Stevanus was leader next time past. He built a ten car lead but a caution when Paul Klager got into Dean Pronovost in turn three and that brought the field back to even. On the restart, Ken Lillycrop would be the leader and come across the line first to get the checkered flag.

The Super Stocks feature was up and eleven cars took green. Brandon McFerran lined up along side Carson Nagy to lead the field to green. McFerran was the early leader and built a sizeable lead. This one was clean and a good race, not a lot of rough moments like the past few weeks. McFerran led flag to flag to pick up the win followed by Chris Howse and Kevin Gallant.

1st feature race for the Superstocks

The next race was the first Late Model feature and it was very exciting. Hudson Nagy and Kevin Albers were out front and led twelve cars to the green. Nagy led early. Billy Schwartzenberg and Shawn Chenoweth were close behind. On lap seven, Schwartzenberg got by Nagy to take the lead. It lasted one lap as Chenoweth got past and was the new leader. The two battled hard, were into each other banging and crashing and doing what they could to be the leader. They came into lapped traffic. They trailed the lapped car for several laps and through three and four Chenoweth gave the car a hip check to move him out of the way. Chenoweth and Schwartzenberg continued to bump and grind each other and as they came to the finish it was Chenoweth followed by Schwartzenberg and Chad Corcoran. On the cool down lap the top two were looking to spar but cooler heads prevailed.

The Pro Fours were next and lined up to take the green. Light rain had started to fall and most cars got lose and yellow flew. The cars went to the pits and we took intermission. Kevin Gallant and Brandon McFerran came out on the track for their showdown. Gary Colling read the rules. They had to run, do pushups, run some, more pushups, situps, jumping jacks and some more running. They had to run sideways and McFerran was focused on winning he took off running and the race belonged to Gallant. The older of the two, nice to see him win one for us older guys. McFerran said he would make a meal for Gallant and that would be Kraft dinner. A rematch was mentioned, we'll see how that goes. Make sure you watch the video, good job guys!! Thought Gallant may need some oxygen but he was ok.

Flamboro Speedway, the battle of Kevin Gallant and Brandon McFerran July 22, 2017

Then we would run the King of the Hill. Eleven cars were ready to battle to the last car standing for the $100 prize. As the cars came to the last few, rain began to fall again. A few cars got lose and then one, his first time at a track, hit the brakes and slid into the turn three wall. He was taken off on the hook. The final two cars decided they would run the final, and it was tentative. The VW from Kitchener was the winner. Thanks to all the drivers and to announcer Gary Colling for making it exciting for the fans, riding with drivers, in their trunk and the bed of a truck. The rain began to fall once again, this time heavier. Racing was called as the track was just to wet to continue. The second set of features will be run August 12th. The Ontario Pro Challenge return September 9th. Any fans in the grandstands will be able to use their ticket from tonight to save $5.00 off for August 12th only. See the Super Late Models, Modifieds, Pro Midgets and the Hot Rod series. They will also be joined by the  Budget Tire Pure Stocks, the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds and Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets. Pits open at 2pm, front gates at 5pm with racing starting at 6pm.
