Travis McLean Excited to Get Season Started at Sunset Speedway
After an off-season filled with making sure their ducks in a row, Travis McLean is ready to kick it all off beginning with round one of the Great Lakes Concrete Series at Sunset Speedway on Sunday, May 20.

After running each weekend at Sauble Speedway last year, McLean Motorsports will scale back their program for 2018, going with a part-time effort focused on performing as well in the events they choose to run.  With the new rule changes in place, combined with the hours put in through the winter, the youngster enters the season feeling confident in his chances for success.

“We want to win races, of course, but we know how strong the competition is,” team owner and Travis’ father Derek McLean said. “So our goals is to qualify for all the big shows, solid top 10 runs and possibly a heat win or two.”

The team’s confidence also comes based on a rookie campaign that saw them put together a string of solid performances, despite admitting that it took some time for both driver and crew to get comfortable with the new car.

“We feel we progressed nicely throughout the season running with the extremely competitive Sauble roster,” he said. “Most nights would run caution free and if you started at the rear staying on lead lap was even a challenge which after the first night we always did. Seeing the progression from running with the pack to running in the middle of the pack was satisfying. Capping the season off qualifying for Autumn Colours through the heats with two fourth places and having a top 15 finish our first time there with this car definitely ended the year on a high note.”

On top of the hopes for their own success, McLean also sees potential in the Super Stock division for 2018, hoping to see good car counts in each event they attend.

“It seems more and more veterans seem to be making a home in this class which raises the bar for the new guys coming in and I feel that makes for a great mix of talent,” he added.
