With Danny O’Brien’s home tracks still two weeks from opening for the 2012 season, he was looking to get out on the track and as defending champion of the race, he was looking forward to Saturday night’s events at Merrittville Speedway, as they hosted their 50 lap Spring Sizzler.
After struggling in his qualifying heat race, O’Brien reported back to the pit area and made some adjustments to the car before the 50 lap main event. Coming from deep in the field, he knew it was going to be tough, but his 22nd starting position didn’t faze the veteran racer. By lap 18, O’Brien was into the top 15, and continued to move forward. As the race hit the halfway mark, O’Brien was up to 14th, and advanced to 11th as the checkered flag waived.
“Track position was key here tonight, and we just started way to far back”, claims O’Brien. “We had a good car, and was able to pass quite a few cars along the way. We had hoped to finish a little higher, but we will take it, and move on”.
This coming week, O’Brien will race at Can Am Motorsports Park on Saturday night. He will be driving a Big Block Modified owned by Mike Adderley. The following week, Danny will be back in his own car, as Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway both open for the 2012 season.
“Mike (Adderley) had asked me to take the car out and make sure everything is ok before he comes back home from North Carolina to race this summer”, explains O’Brien. “We were going to do it opening night, but it got rained out, and last week the Modifieds were not on the schedule, so we will do it this week”.
Danny O’Brien would like to thank 1000 Islands RV Centre, Pat’s Rad, BOB FM, Ponte Bros. Masonry, Morrison Racing Engines, Snap-On Adam Way, Wurth, Bicknell Racing Products, and Integra Racing Shocks for their support going into the 2012 season.
