Kawartha Speedway 2012:  Maybe the Third Time Will be the Charm

By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications

Since the checkered flag flew Friday, August 24th race teams, fans and officials at Kawartha Speedway have been waiting for the 2012 season finale.  The first attempt to wrap-up the current campaign was scheduled for Friday, September 7th but predicted heavy rains and thunderstorms delayed the show to Friday, September 14th.  Everyone was checking the forecast and hoping for the best, but there must be something about Fridays in September, because for the second straight week, the last show of the year was delayed.  Promoter/General Manager Derek Lynch says its unfortunate, but they’ll keep trying to take care of the unfinished business.

“There are tight point battles throughout our 3 regular divisions and we owe it to the drivers and the fans to settle things on the racetrack,” said Lynch.  “We keep a close eye on the weather for every race because it has always been our policy to give the crowd a complete show.  I’m a race fan too and the last thing I want to do is start a program we can’t run through to the conclusion.”

Kawartha’s final night of the season is a full night of racing with a 50 lap feature for the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks, along with regular action Thunder Cars and the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models.  The show will also include the much anticipated 75 lap Don Biederman Memorial for the OSCAAR Super Late Models and the first Fraserville appearance for the OSCAAR Modifieds.  Before making the decision to postpone their latest attempt at finishing the schedule, Lynch says his team of officials needed to see what some of the other tracks in the area were up to.

“We looked at the 21st of September, but that’s the first night of a big weekend at Brighton,” said Lynch.  “Another factor that ruled out that date was the ACT Invitational in New Hampshire.  Dan McHattie, Ryan Kimball and Bryan Mercer will be attending that race September 22nd.  They’ll be representing our track and we couldn’t have them miss the final night of points.  After working the phones and various web-sites for a couple of hours, we made the decision to go with Friday, September 28th and hope for the best.”

Kawartha klips:  The Friday, September 28th show – with the exception of the Ontario Legends Series – will follow the same format Kawartha Speedway officials had scheduled for September 7th.  Gates open at 3:00, with racing starting at 6:00.  Kawartha will host the annual NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season finale Saturday, September 22nd.  A schedule and details for the running of this year’s race – The Pinty’s 250, presented by Dodge – can be found at

Since his win in the first Thunder Car feature of the year, Matt Spence has held the top spot in points.  The Bailieboro, Ontario racer is looking forward to closing out Kawartha Speedway’s 2012 season Friday, September 28th.
