Wheelstander Makes History At Full Throttle
« on: July 20, 2014, 09:54:49 PM »
Varney, ON- It’s not often that the world of drag racing and oval racing come together on the same track, but that is what happened this past Friday at Full Throttle Speedway.  Just a few miles south of Durham, history was made.  NitroMike, from Mission BC brought his Guinness World Record holding, wheelstanding PT Cruiser out to show it off, prior to racing action.  The alcohol blown, injected, Chrysler 448 PT Cruiser did a couple of laps, putting on an amazing fire show for the fans.  Then the racier kicked in, although NitroMike informed track staff he would not make an attempt at a wheelstand due to the banking of the track, he lined it up out of corner two and did it, history was made, a wheelstand at an oval track!  Mike and his wife Wanda tour all over the United States and Canada with their amazing “Walking Tall PT Cruiser” and will be performing Grand Bend in a couple of weeks.  For more information on NitroMike check out his web site at nitromike.com

Even after witnessing history before the first green flag was in the air how would fans have known they would witness even more history along with the ever growing excitement that has become a normal race night at the highbanks.  The Outlaw Four Modified where on had to try their run at three twenty lap features.  Even though the field may have lacked cars they defiantly were not short on driver talent.  With the likes of returning feature winner A.J. Emms in the 10, the 0 piloted by Cliff Hodgkinson, 46 driven by Shawn McGlynn and 40 by The Ironman Gary Elliot, who also had his first ever run in a roofless car.  Fans where in store for some great racing.  In feature one, the first half of the race saw 0 Cliff Hodgkinson from Breslau, solidly out in front.  A lap thirteen caution for the 3 Rob Divenanzo who got high in corner 2 and slid his ride into the tires at the wall.  On the restart, 10 A.J. Emms would take advantage of his outside pole starting position to jump into the lead that would take him all the way to his first checker flag of the night.  Second was 0 Cliff Hodgkinson, third 36 Dave Hodgkinson from Breslau, fourth 40 Gary Elliot from Waterdown and fifth 3 Rob Divenanzo.  In feature two 10 A.J. Emms would take advantage of his pole starting position to make it two in a row, on hopes of getting the hat trick after intermission.  Second in this race was 36 Dave Hodgkinson, third 0 Cliff Hodgkinson, fourth 40 Gary Elliot and rounding out the top five 46 Shawn McGlynn.  In feature three of the night it looked like 46 Shawn McGlynn was on his way to play spoiler but with two laps to go 10 A. J. Emms was able to get along side and with the white flag flying it was a side by side dash to the strip and in the end he would not be deigned the hat trick.  Third was 0 Cliff Hodgkinson, fourth 36 Dave Hodgkinson and fifth 40 Gary Elliot.

In the Open Wheel Modified class fans got to witness some outstanding bold moves as first time visitor, 57 Andy Jankovich from Buffalo NY, made the three hour trip after seeing the speedway on You Tube three years ago and put it on his wish list of tracks to race at.  He was also looking forward to going head to head with the current number 1 driver in Ontario Open Wheel Modifieds Gary McLean from Conn, on the track he has dominated over the years.   With a good field of cars on hand feature one saw the local favourite start in the number 3 position, while his competitor starting in the number 9 spot.  From the drop of the green, fans were on the edge of there seats, as 8 Gary McLean did everything he could to get out in front and build a big lead.  Back in the pack 57 Andy Jankovich was working his way to the front.  While running third, as the leaders were starting to make their way around lapped traffic, he was able to duck down inside and make the pass to the lead.  Now with 8 McLean, running second he did everything he could to get back around but in the end it was 57 Jankovich, 8 McLean third 4 Aaron McLean from Mount Forest, fourth 13 Bobby Tolton from Guelph and fifth 47 Brian McLean from Conn.  Feature two, Jankovich would start in the fourth position and Gary McLean in the fifth position but McLean would take advantage of his inside line moving while the outside line didn’t get a jump off the green and it would be McLean to the early lead with Jankovich dropping in behind him and following the whole race, trying everything he could to get past.  Then as the white flag was coming out McLean had to make a pass on a lapped car going high, he figured he had the right line but got hung up just enough to allow 57 Jankovich to take the low line and make the pass for the lead.  There was nothing Gary McLean could do but watch the checker fly one more time for the American.  Third in this feature went to 4 Aaron McLean, fourth 47 Brian McLean and rounding out the top five was 23 Paul Milligan from Innisfil Beach.  You can watch this second feature race by following this link  :http://youtu.be/rT6eC9VAYpo?list=UU6fAn1rLsk_0FWitF4dpApw

Mini Stock saw the return of a former regular at the speedway.  He proved he has not forgotten how to hit the marks to make it around the highbanks.  With the return of Brandon Crumbie from Cookstown, it just added another quality front running car to the already long list of drivers at Full Throttle.  In feature one it was the main players 51 Clark Hartman from Waterloo and 36 Corry Young from Owen Sound getting out front running side by side with the 68 Brandon Crumbie following right behind waiting for a chance.  The chance came on lap 14 when a little miscue by Hartman opened the door enough to allow Crumbie the inside line.  A caution came on lap 17 as 14 Brian Wilson from Rockwood would blew a rad hose.  On the restart it was Crumbie inside, Hartman outside and Young right behind.  That is the way they would run the rest of the race. Fourth in this feature would go to 7 Paul Boyd from Harriston and to round out the top 5 would be 35 Tim Tolton from Guelph.  Feature two looked like it was going to be all 73 Scott Schlueter from Milverton, as he was able to use his outside pole position to get a great jump on the rest of the field.  As it turned out, lady luck was not on his side, as 68 Crumbie and 51 Hartman were able to track him down close to the halfway point in the race, slip past and that is how they would finish, 68 Crumbie getting his second checker of the night followed by 51 Hartman 73 Schlueter hanging on for third, fourth going to 7 Paul Boyd and rounding out the top five was 36 Corry Young.

In Pure Stock action drivers would test themselves and their machines, as they would also try three features on this night.  In feature one saw the return of 01 Travis Farrow from Dromore, after a couple of weeks off he showed he was ready to race as he got himself out front and was able to stay there the entire race.  Second would go to 17 Sandy Eccles from Ayton, third 14 Luke Bos from Conn, fourth Jesse Lamont from Hanover and rounding out the top five 34 Don Tremble from Durham.  Feature two saw the one two battle to the finish right from the drop of the green, 14 Luke Bos would use his pole starting position to fend off the hard charging 43 Joey Schouten from Mount Forest.  Even after a number of cautions, the way they started is the way they finished.  Third would go to 84 Matt Hopkins, fourth 34 Don Tremble and fifth 5 Lyle Lorenz from Listowel.  The third and final feature for the night, again with a number of cautions did see an amazing finish.  As this race looked all but over with the 17 Sandy Eccles on cruise control for the final lap, he made the turn coming out of corner four to the checker when the right rear tire of the car came off, spinning him to the infield, much to the delight of 14 Luke Bos who now found himself in victory lane!  Second was 01 Travis Farrow, third 34 Don Tremble, fourth 84 Matt Hopkins and rounding out the top five 43 Joey Schouten.

Next action will be this coming Friday July 25th as we have V8 Thunder Stocks for three features, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks, and the Crazy Trains.  Everything as always kicks off at 7:30PM, and be sure to find us on Facebook to stay updated on coming events and attractions!
