Brighton Automotive and Mystical Distributing present Canada Day Championships at Brighton

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON (July 2, 2015) – The 48th season of racing action at Brighton Speedway resumes Saturday with a full card of action for all five local divisions. Drivers will get their shot at setting new track records and fastest lap bragging rights on Saturday night with single car time trials. Time trials are scheduled for 5:00pm prior to the 7:00pm start time.

RUSH Pro Late Models

The Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Models were off the schedule two weeks ago, but several drivers chose to compete against the World of Outlaws Late Models Series. The drivers who competed against the Outlaws will get their second chance at time trials this season. Last year, Greg Belyea (No.25 Excel Tower Service) was fastest with a lap of 15.317 seconds.

RUSH weekly series action resumes this week with Corey Earl (No.11 Hotch’s Auto Parts) at the top of the 2015 point standings. Earl will look to park in victory lane for the second time on Saturday night. Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Deerhaven) has won three times, but a pair of subpar finishes have the No.57 second in the current standings. Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan), Kyle Sopaz (No.12 Free Flow Petroleum) and Steve Baldwin (No.5 Smokin’ Speedway) complete the current top-five in the standings.

Canadian Modifieds

The Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds were the only weekly division on tap during the Mud Slinger 50 two weeks ago. Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive) became the first driver to repeat in victory lane this season. Five different drivers have earned checkered flags in six races this season. The 2014 champion, Ryan Scott, turned the fastest lap in time trials last season at 16.374 seconds. Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care) was second fastest at 16.591.

Hennessy has finished in the top-five in every start so far this year and sits atop the standings with a narrow 20-point lead over Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise). O’Blenis suffered a mechanical failure last time out of the box and fell to third in the standings, but has half a season to make-up a 170-point deficit. Curtis King (No.07 Ajax Nissan) and Kraig Handley (No.91 Tri-Canadian Energy), on the strength of a third-place finish two weeks ago, sit third and fourth respectively in the division standings.

Pro Stock

The current division point leader, Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire), is the only Pro Stock driver to race since the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock drivers last hit the track at Brighton on June 13. Ramsay travelled to Brockville Speedway last Saturday and fell one-spot shy of his fifth victory of the season. Ramsay’s success at Brighton hasn’t come without its challenges from Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Landscaping), among others. Anderson was fastest in time trials last season with a quick lap of 17.289 seconds.

Anderson sits second in the current standings, just 20 points behind Ramsay. Wade Purchase (No.53 Performance Auto Sales) is the only Pro Stock victor this season, besides Ramsay and Anderson, and will look for win number two this week. Jamie Marshall (No.55 C&L Upholstery) and Leslie Mowat (No.2 Tri-County Plastics) have been in the hunt every week as well and will be eager to claim their first victories of the season once again.

Comp 4

The Bill’s Johns Comp 4 drivers return to action after a long three-week hiatus. Several drivers travelled east to compete at Brockville over the last two weeks. Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) finished third at the BOS on June 20, the same spot he occupies in the current Brighton standings. French won at Brighton when he last unloaded the No.0 on June 13.

French’s teammate Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) is the current point leader and has one victory this season. She was also fastest in 2014 time trials at 19.324 seconds. Austin Reid (No.85 Young Drivers) sits just 35 points behinds Mills for the lead. Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating) is fourth in the standings. Courtney Mastin (No.97 DW Metal Expressions) is currently fifth in the standings.

Stingers

The Quinte Septic Stingers have been on hold since June 6 and will be back to full speed this week. The Stingers will be the only division not to take part in time trials. Chris Lammle (No.95 Sowerby Signs) won when the Stingers last hit the track on June 6 and sits second in the point standings following the victory. Wins will be difficult to come by this season in the Stinger division with over 25 cars attempting to qualify for just 20 spots each race.

Jorden Pickell (No.93 Sowerby Signs) is the current point-leader with a 25-point advantage over Lammle. Andy Fletcher (No.42 Like-Nu Driveway Sealing), Mike Brooks (No.44 Doug’s Auto Glass) and Del MacGregor (No.19 R. Ward Construction) occupy the current top-five.
