Alex Labbe Wins The Pole For NASCAR Season Opener
NASCAR Pinty’s Series driver Alex Labbe of Victoriaville, Que., set the pace for the season opening race, with a time of 1:23.182 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Saturday, May 21.
Two-time Series champion Andrew Ranger of Roxton Pond, Que., will join Labbe on the front row and Pier-Luc Ouellette will start third.
The Pirelli World Challenge GT class ran the first of its two weekend races. Patrick Long finished first from pole position in a Porsche 911 GT3R. He was followed to the line by the Bentley Continental GT3 of Andrew Palmer with Ryan Eversley third in an Acura TLX-GT. Michael Shein finished first in the GTA class with Martin Fuentes second. Alec Udell took first in the GT Cup class with Sloan Urry coming in second.
The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama held the first of its two weekend races as well. Starting from pole position, Alegra Motorsports driver Daniel Morad won in the Platinum Cup class over Scott Harrgrove. Shaun McKaigue took the victory in Gold Cup with pole sitter Bruno Chapinotti second.
Saturday's racing also saw the Canadian Touring Car Championship run the first leg of its weekend doubleheader. Gary Kwok took the Grand Touring win – as well as first overall – over Bob Attrell. Scott Nicol was first – second overall – in Super Touring and Michel Sallenbach was victorious in the Touring Class.
Sunday's schedule begins with qualifying and three races; the Pirelli World Challenge (Sprint-X GT and GTS) and the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama. After lunch the final three races of the weekend will take place. The NASCAR Pinty’s Series race will take the green flag at 1:00 pm followed by the Pirelli World Challenge GT/GTA/GT Cup race and the Canadian Touring Car Championship to wrap up the Castrol presents the Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend.
