which falken tire IMSLOW? maybe you should go onto their website and do some research and/or ask tech why they are not allowed. Sunset is not the only track to not allow the use of these tires, i have a very good understanding of why they are doing this but those are not the only tires around

I usually run used tires that i get for free at a tire shop, but its gotten to the point where ive got my car dialed in and everytime i try a different tire i have to try new things all over again...next year i think i will be buying all new tires, just so i dont have to change my setup all the time...that being said i have recently priced out good tires that i heard worked pretty well for oval track racing..and the Falken was the cheapest.....i know guys that buy a new tire every week at about 125-150 bucks a pop..IMO thats a little far for 4cyl racing considering a payout is 30-150 bucks....ive also heard that the falkens last a pretty good amount of time.....so why the track wouldnt let us run a cheaper tire that we'd have to buy every few weeks instead of every single week is a mystery to me....their explanation at the winter drivers meeting was that every falken tire was rated as high performance lmao! that doesnt mean that you cant buy a goodyear, yokohama, toyo, michelin,bf goodrich and so on thats not rated high performance...infact i see tires that are known as "high performance'' at the track every weekend...the only thing stopping me from going and buying a DOT hoosier is the fact that may not have an H rating...

SUNSETS TIRE RULE

No racing type tires or snow tires allowed. DOT approved radial tires
maximum size 215R in 60 or 65 series, 225R in 70,75 or 80 series tires
allowed. Passenger car tires only. No recaps or performance tires. Speed
rating limited to S, T, U, and H. No tires to protrude outside of body.

first of all a term like"racing type tire" is too vague.. whats considered racing type and whats not
2nd of all i see tires out there that have V ratings so obviously the rules not inforced anyway
3rd of all NOWHERE does it say no Falkens...they just expect us to know that...whats stopping a new guy from going and buying falkens and gettin to the track only to learn it was a waste of money because he cant run them

Heres a few facts about the Falkens . The hardest cars on tires are the FWD cars with a welded differential , they rip the right front to hell in no time . Go ask Carcone and Zinke they have both tried the Falken and have not found any tire that lasts as long . At Barrie Glaze is running Falkens that he bought off a guy from Sunset that are now 3 yrs old and Glaze has 3/4 of a season on them at this point if he has not replaced them yet. Falkens do not give you a big performance edge over the other tires they just work better longer and provide relief to your wallet . I would like to hear from those who don't like the Falkens and hear why ?

i find that new tires take a couple weeks to come in and work nice! but that's at Barrie! hey maybe they should resurface the track and you guys wouldn't have to go through so many tires! I have run the same right front tire all year and theres still another half season if not more left on it! I use Cooper Cobras! they hook up really well!

The Falkens work right away, stick like glue I think it makes ya faster but if your not loosing grip I think you are safer in that respect. They aren't that expensive and they have an H speed rating so I don't understand why they wouldn't let you run them.

well if the rules say you can run an "H" rated tire, and the Falkens are an "H" rated tire then you should use them! when they tell you no that's when you get out the rules and show them to the tech guy or whoever complains! that's what i would do!

Kahnefreak I have good news for you and bad news for you , first the bad news . Those Cooper Cobras  are junk they have a UTOG rating of 440 and thats rock hard they also have a very heavy carcass weight so that little 4 cylinder engine has to work very hard just to get all that rotating weight spinning when you come off the corner . The good news is your a very good driver if you can run as good as you do with such crummy tires .

Here are the second best tire imo that is legal to run at Sunset Doug Bell ran them on his Honda for a while
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVS+ES100

Heres the third best imo these are the ones Thayne is using

well the tires seem to stick pretty darn good! the best tires i have ever put on my car! maybe the way my car is set up makes them work. they are pretty soft tires. The treadwear or whatever is 400 on them! but i know the Falkens are much lower! ah well it's no biggie though cause i am racing 2 more nights with the car and then no more 4 bangers for me!!! lol

Hill3 i have no reason to mess with his mind i am trying to give him the benefit of an area of expertise that i have . The points leaders at your track would all go faster if they were on better tires then the Cobras . With a UTOG of 440 and a carcass weight way over 20 lbs a long with the inconsistent tire moulds that Cooper is well known for these tires are best suited for the pick up truck that hauls the race car to the track.

Now Spencer behave !  I have run Falcon Ziex all year 205/60-14 on the right and 195/60-14's on the left and they stick like glue through the corners. After a race when you measure the softness they are about the same as a hoosier slick which makes them work well. when I arrived at Sunset I was told I could not run them. How ever I guess some guys had them at the first of the year and they let them run them for 5 weeks only I was informed of this by the Sunset tech official. Tech allowed me and my son to run them for 5 weeks only at which point we would have to change them. As far as a performance advantage, I would say there is some. How ever the best thing about these tires is the saftey advantage of them. We all know what happens when a right front blows out going through the corner, into the wall right ? Well with the Falcon Ziex when they blow out the bead of the tire drops to the inside of the rim and with the soft side wall the tread runs flat on the bead of the rim and you can still actually steer the car to some extent. My point is that they make for a very safe tire for racing in lieu of the performance advantage. I would rotate the right rear to the right front about every 4-5 weeks, at $100 each one every 5 weeks is not a bad tire bill for racing.
