Report: NASCAR considering Canada race

TSN.ca Staff

3/22/2005

According to a report in the Toronto Star, NASCAR is considering Toronto and Montreal as race sites.

''We'll visit different places in Canada in the next 30 to 90 days to see what  opportunities exist,'' NASCAR chief operating officer George Pyne told the Winston-Salem Journal for a story published Monday. ''The two markets are Toronto and Montreal. Where within those markets? Obviously it will be a road course. But where, we don't have an answer.''

NASCAR recently held a successful Busch series race in Mexico that saw 94,229 people watch Martin Truex Jr. take the checkered flag.

Four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon likes the idea of the series heading north.

''I'd love to see us in Canada,'' said Gordon. ''Staying in North America is extremely important. Canada seems like the next natural place for us to go. Obviously Mexico went well for the Busch cars; that might be a good option (for a Cup race) as well.''

Is it possible to get this in time for this Toronto Indy (July 8th, 9th, 10th) or Montreal (August 26th, 27th, 28th)????

I don't know, but it is sure that they could make it happen for next year.

I think Montreal would be a better venue for NASCAR.

how about neither of the above. Mosport is far superior as a race track to either. The problem is lack of grandstands which could likely be remedied quite easily with an infusion of cash. Montreal is too tight for full bodied cars, Toronto street course exhibits everything that is wrong with street racing-poor sightlines, rough, narrow, little passing.
Please add Bowmanville to the choices!

Wonder how much cash would be needed to bring the Sanair Oval
up to Nascar standards ?

The track is almost a mile oval and Indy cars used race there.

From what I understand the track itself is good shape and the
Pro-Cam guys are racing on it.

If NASCAR wants to race in Canada yearly .

Investing some cash to purchase / fix up Sanair might be a good starting point.

I would like to see it at Mosport too, love the track and facilities, not going to happen though. Not a high profile venue. NO seats to speak of though.

I think NASCAR would want it piggy-backed onto an Indy race. Much of the advertising would be in place already, track staff, and sign in procedures etc. It would be cheaper for NASCAR to do it this way instead of creating a complete weekend on thier own. Not to mention the fact that the course is already set up with hospitality in place. It would mean that you might see CASCAR on Friday, NASCAR on Saturday and Indy on Sunday.

Same would hold true for Sanair, starting from scratch more or less. If they were to go Oval, probably Cayuga (one of the larger surfaces), good track surface, just add some more seats.

If they wanted to make it a yearly race, Sanair would be a good Oval choice, but it would need a huge makover to get it in condition. You won't see NASCAR racing at a run-down facility.

Report: NASCAR favours Mosport

TSN.ca Staff

3/24/2005

TSN.ca - Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, is the leading candidate to land a NASCAR stock car race as soon as 2006, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

The Star reported that a group of NASCAR executives met Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Florida., to map out an expansion strategy. Part of that strategy will include a meeting with Myles Brandt, president and general manager of Mosport.

Brandt said Wednesday he already has had meetings with NASCAR officials about Mosport. He told the Star that NASCAR bosses are serious about a race at his four-kilometre road course.

"They have actually already been to Mosport," Brandt told the Star. "And within the next 30 to 90 days they are going to be back to take another look at the track."

The Star report says Mosport has moved ahead of Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve because of its ability to host races from the Nextel Cup, Busch Grand National or Craftsman Truck series.

The contract between promoter Normand Legault and the city of Montreal, which owns Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, limits its use to twice a year - once for the Canadian Grand Prix and once for the Champ Car Molson Indy Montreal.

While speculation has been rampant that Legault would dump Champ Car in favour of a NASCAR Nextel Cup race, he might not do so for a Busch or Craftsman Truck race.

NASCAR made its first foray outside of continental U.S. this season when the Busch series raced in Mexico City.

As I said, Mosport would be my favorite choice, maybe some temporary stands. Mosport has good management and infrastructure in place. Guess it's wait and see.

The Mosport stuff is contrary to what the NASCAR guy said on the FAN590 radio show last night at 5 although he didn't rule it out completely he said it would need a lot of work. He definitely seemed to be leaning towards the facilities in Montreal without committing to anything. I think they are enjoying the buzz that these stories are generating up here.

It makes sense to me that they would want to be in both Toronto and Montreal markets eventually given the demographics.

He did say it would likely be a road course and they want one that is wide enough for passing and with long enough straights to generate speed.

He also was pretty firm that it would be a Busch and/or Truck event. No timeline that they are working to although it might be possible to get it done in 2006.

They are also looking to fit something in during the prime Canadian summer months of June-July-August that are already pretty full event wise in general for Canadians and in particular for the NASCAR schedules at existing northeastern venues.

There was a mention of how they are already in Canada through the weekly NASCAR Dodge Series at two tracks (didn't mention them by name), the affliation with CASCAR and the Scarborough marketing office/partnership with TSN.

I do recall me saying that NASCAR Busch was coming to Canada. I think MOSPORT would be a great place to be.

Now a good friend of mine had some good suggestions. Get the CNE grounds invovled.

C.N.E. Grounds - great Idea RW

Sure would be great if a major firm such as Molsons built a “Bristol North” on the C.N.E. grounds.

Why doesn't the City of Toronto donate a part of the CNE grounds to say Molsons to build  "Bristol North".  If land was donated one may think the cost would be around $100,000,00 to start with a capacity of say 100,000 seats with plans to expand to 200,000.

Think it could be build in time for the 2008 season.
The City may get more then their money back by year 2.

Hey you never know!  ;-)
