Cup Lites at Cayuga & Peterborough
« on: January 30, 2007, 04:29:06 PM »
AMHERST, N.Y. -- With the announcement that Cayuga International Speedway and Peterborough Speedway have both been added to the 2007 schedule, the Cup Lites Series reinforces its commitment to its Canadian teams. The addition marks a return of sorts, as both these tracks were part of the original Cup Lites schedule in 1998 but have not been on the schedule for at least six years.

“We’re really excited to be going back to both Cayuga and Peterborough,” said Cup Lites Communications Director, Kevin Blakely. “Although I never had a chance to race at either track, I’ve heard great things about both of these facilities. This is a great opportunity for our drivers and teams to experience some new tracks, and we’re looking forward to showing off the series to a new set of fans".

The Cayuga International Speedway, located in Hagersville, Ontario is just an hour and a half from both Buffalo, NY and Toronto, ON. Since 1966, Cayuga International Speedway has strived hard to present the best in oval track competition. Through this hard work and dedication to the sport, the track has become regarded by fans, racers, and sponsors as Canada’s premier racing facility. The storied 5/8-mile oval is now under new ownership with a brand new vision for exciting racing events that will restore Cayuga to its glorious past.

“Our goal is to provide fans with the best ‘specials only’ racing format,” says President Jerry Santucci, adding he wants to see Cayuga Speedway become, once again, a special outing for families and race fans alike. (For more visit: http://www.cayugaracing.com)

Peterborough Speedway is Canada's fastest 1/3-mile paved oval, due in large part to a new racing surface. The spectator facilities at Peterborough Speedway can accommodate over 6,000 spectators for racing events at the oval. This speedway boasts one of the very best lighting systems allowing the hosting of televised events at night. The racetrack averages thirty-two (32) race events per year, making it one of the busiest racing venues in Canada. It is one of the most versatile short tracks in existence capable of handling the entire spectrum of motorsports divisions.

Peterborough Speedway is located immediately west of Peterborough, Ontario, and is about 1.5 hours east of Metropolitan Toronto. Peterborough draws attendance from the upper part of the Golden Horseshoe and 401 corridor, extending from Toronto to Cornwall. (For more visit: http://www.peterboroughspeedway.com)

See the Cup Lites at Cayuga International Speedway on May 26 (with a possible second date TBA) and at Peterborough Speedway on June 30 and July 28.

About the Cup Lites:

The Cup Lites Racing Series is a high-speed, low-cost, spec racing division designed to bring professional racing into a range that everyone can afford. The cars are low maintenance, 3/4-scale stock cars powered by a 700cc snowmobile engine. The rules of the Cup Lites Series are designed to keep the cost of racing as low as possible, to keep the emphasis on drivers’ ability, and to make the division as competitive and equal as possible. The Series tours some of the top tracks around Western New York, Northern Pennsylvania and Southern Ontario, making it accessible to many fans and attractive to great sponsors.

The Cup Lites Racing Series, now entering its ninth year, was the brainchild of Tim Bender, an 11-time Snowmobile Champion and former NASCAR Busch Series driver. In 2003, Buffalo businessman and long time team owner Paul Graff acquired the series.

I've seen these guys at Cayuga (a few years ago) doing demonstration hot laps. They were pretty quick for small cars. It should be a good show if there's a decent car count.

They seem to be able to get 13-14 cars per race, and I think they're expecting 15-16 full-time teams this season, so that's pretty good...Like I've said before, I don't know why the Pro Challenge and Cup Lites cars weren't made compatible in the first place, but that's a discussion for another time...
