Posted by: CanadianRacingOnline« on: December 30, 2009, 10:24:29 PM »Where do you buy tires that are ten Plus years old? Sanford & Sons Junk Yard? Everytime I go to buy tires they need to order them in and they are new tires made the year I bought them.
Did they say what a shelf life of a tire should be? Posted by: jibbyjebidiah« on: December 30, 2009, 06:57:44 PM »Tires do dry out with age, but many factors can contribute to tire failure. Underinflation/overinflation. Being out of balance, impact damage(potholes, curbs, etc) excessive wear, sun damage, alignment of the tires, the list goes on.

During the video, when they were interviewing the guy in the warehouse with all the wrecked cars, you will notice that most are Ford Explorers. A few years back, if you remember, Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, had problems with the tires exploding on the left rear of their vehicles. That problem had nothing to do with the age of the tire, it was caused by the tire heating up on those vehicles. When you listen to the guy being interviewed, it is obvious that he is refering to that case, and not to the age of tires. I am positive that if you showed that guy this clip, he would tell you that his comments were taken out of context.

But is the date code legit? Why should we pay the full boat for old stock? You don't do that for anything else. Cars, ATVs, snowmobiles, etc. If the date code thing is correct then I know I will be looking for that and paying accordingly or going elsewhere. As far as the age of the tire goes and safety, I guess it all depends on how they are stored. Fluorescent lighting is notorious for making different substances deteriorate prematurely. Temperature is another factor also the sun. All things to consider when buying "new" tires. ABC 20/20, “Buckwheat” (of the Little Rascals) story. (1990). Fell for hoax. “In 1990 the ABC program 20/20 was hoaxed into believing that Billy “Buckwheat” Thomas was alive and working as a grocery bagger in Tempe, Arizona. (Thomas actually died in 1980.) A segment broadcast October 5 with narrator Hugh Downs featured an impostor.” ABC 20/20 “Exploding Fords” story (1978). Staged footage. Similar to the later NBC “exploding” GM trucks episode, ABC aired “grossly misleading crash videos and simulations, withheld the same sorts of material facts about the tests, and relied on the same dubious experts with the same ties to the plaintiffs bar… viewers were shown a crash fire and explosion without being told it had been started by an incendiary device.” Heres the truth about the " exploding tires" http://www.jbs.org/article-archive/2298-exploding-tires-and-lovin-free-trade Posted by: ernie« on: December 29, 2009, 04:57:29 PM »Don't know if this applies in Canada but this may be a serious problem with "new" tires and date of manufacture.
