Hot Fun in the Summertime on Canada's Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

There's nothing like a summertime Saturday night at Peterborough Speedway.

The 6th show of the 2014 campaign took the green flag just after 6:00 with the Parry Spring Service Renegade Trucks battling for 8 laps, with Jack Dallin and Stephen Bierworth taking the wins. Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car qualifying heats went to Kyle Donaldson - in Howie Crowe's #28 - Craig Scott, Dan Price and Anthony DiBello, while Kyle Donaldson, Ryan Kimball, Jack Horner and Tyler Betts took the Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model heats.

Hurricane Midget teams ran a trio of 10 lap preliminary heats, with Shawn Stones, Dave Burrows and Jamie Bound earning checkered flags.  Larry Lawson took the 'B' main last chance qualifier.

Stacey Bierworth and defending track champion Bill O'Hara paced the Parry Spring Service Renegade Truck field to the green flag.  It was a 4 truck breakaway, with O'Hara, Jeff Vandebelt, Jack Dallin and Stephen Bierworth showing the quick way around.  For the first time this season, a driver other Dallin took the pick-up truck win, as Bill O'Hara made it to Dart Heating and Air Conditioning Victory Lane.  Vandebelt, Dallin, Stephen Bierworth and Josh Milwain completed the top 5.

With a front row of Rob Richards and Tom Podd, the Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car pack came to the line for a 20 lap feature dance.  There was action everywhere on the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, west of the Liftlock City as Kevin Hinds and Kyle Donaldson moved to the front of the pack.  Donaldson took over the top spot at the halfway mark, with Craig Scott and Anthony DiBello battling for 3rd and 4th.  With 13 laps complete, a spin by Fidelle DiBello brought out the yellow.  Donaldson punctuated his prior performance on the drop of the green and held off Dan Price, Craig Scott, Anthony DiBello and Kevin Hinds for the win.

Hurricane Midget feature action rolled to the stripe with 24 starters.  The race's first yellow flew with 5 laps complete to clear a pair of runners who had dropped out of the action, but couldn't clear the racing line.  Richard Woodland and Brian Woodland would bring the field back to the green, with Adam Carrothers in the fight as well.  Another yellow waved to slow the field with the lap counter showing 7 complete and there was a red flag for a multi-car wreck that also involved a rollover in the second turn.  With some excellent racing during the closing stages, Jamie Bound was able to claim the win, over Richard Woodland, Carrothers, Rob McColl and Jessica James.  The Hurricane Midgets return to the schedule Saturday, August 9th.

With 25 laps on the table, the Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model teams came from the staging area 12 strong with Amanda Connolly and Ryan Kimball on the front row.  Just 1 lap was complete when Nick Sinopoli and Paul Maltese spun coming through turns 3 and 4.  Connolly paced the field until a yellow with 4 complete when Matt Spence slowed to a stop in the front stretch grass.  Kimball and Donaldson were second and third.  At the halfway mark, Kyle Donaldson looped the #66 coming off the second turn. Connolly was still leading the way with Kimball on her tail as teams came back to racing speed.  Even with a rear-view mirror filled with talent, former track champion Amanda Connolly still managed to pick-up the win.  Kimball, Adam Cuthbertson, Maltese and Tyler Betts completed the fast 5.  The Late Model division is still waiting for its first repeat feature winner.

In the year's first 100 lap endurance event, #141 Steve Lovie picked-up the win, over #22 Cameron Pedersen, #15 Shane Richards, #7x Noel Snow and #401Tyler Junkin.

Bullring Bullet Points:  Peterborough's Laura Preston pocketed $424.50 in the 50/50 draw...For a second consecutive week, Chris Mitchell's #22 Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model had a guest driver, with Dan McHattie taking a turn behind the wheel.  Veteran Nick Sinopoli drove the #55 for Bob Kish, with Kyle 'Wheely' Donaldson doing double duty in the #28 Thunder Car and the #66 Late Model from the Crowe Brothers Racing shops, while Paul Maltese and Ryan Connor made their first career Peterborough Speedway starts in the Late Model and Thunder Car divisions respectively.

With a rare Saturday night off - June 28th - Peterborough Speedway will host the annual Chase for the Colours pole qualifying event Sunday, June 29th.  Feature race winners in the Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car, Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stock and Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun divisions will earn the inside front row starting spot for their respective features during the 22nd annual Autumn Colours Classic October 10th, 11th and 12th.  Spectator gates will open at 1:00, with racing at 2:30.
