Sandercock, Hennessy, Ramsay, Greer, MacGregor, and Perry win on Lang and Fetter Ford night at Brighton
BRIGHTON (June 7, 2014) - On an action packed night at Brighton Speedway, 73 cars and 13 school buses signed in for night five of the 2014 championship chase, presented by Lang and Fetter Ford. A capacity crowd was on hand for the wildly entertaining Workman's OK Tire school bus races.
Sandercock first repeat Late Model winner
Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) stole the headlines of the show winning his second Vanderlaan Building Supplies Pro Late Model feature of the season.
Sandercock started fifth behind a stout top two rows. David MacDonald (No.97 MacDonald Homes) led early after starting on the pole, but Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan) was able to move past MacDonald on lap 11 to take over the top spot.
Driving through the field, Sandercock wrestled second away from MacDonald and followed Potts at the front. Potts chose to carve out the top groove of the track while Sandercock referred to the grip on the bottom.
The decision would be to Potts' detriment as Sandercock stole the lead on lap 13, but only after a door-to-door battle for the lead over a full lap. Steve Baldwin (No.5 cigarchief.com) found more grip on the bottom and slid in to second on lap 16.
Baldwin quickly closed the gap on Sandercock over the final 14 caution-free laps. But Sandercock slammed the door shut on several occasions to pick-up the victory. Baldwin settled for second. Corey Earl (No.11 Hotch's Auto Parts) quietly drove through the field to a third-place finish and picked up the hard-charger award in his second start of the year.
Sandercock and Baldwin were the Motosports of Trenton qualifying heat race winners.
Perry wins school bus feature
The exciting Workman's OK Tire school buses were the third feature of the night. A 15-lap main event started with a four-wide salute for the 13 buses on hand.
Mark Rinaldi (No.19) got out to an early lead in his diesel-powered bus. But Jim Perry (No.44) stole the lead on lap 4. He never looked back, even when his lead was erased during a competition yellow at lap 8. Rick Sopaz (No.24) gave him a run for the top prize, but Perry wheeled his bus at top speed, at times darting between slower buses.
Fans got an especially exciting moment when on lap two a traffic jam in turn two caused Matt Downs' (No.55) bus to go over the berm and in to the creek.
Perry and Sopaz won the school bus heats.
Hennessy gets 100th Canadian Mod win
It was about as dominant as dominant can be. After starting 13th, Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive) made quick work of the 20-car OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Mod field and led 18 laps for his second-consecutive win of the season. The win, punctuated by a heat race victory earlier in the night, was Hennessy's 100th checkered flag since the beginning of the 2011 season.
Zac McBride (No. 8 Daddy's Electric Tattoo) led the opening lap before Curtis King (No.07 Flowmetrix) solved the bottom of the track to lead lap two. The first caution of the night on lap five for a spinning Dale Locke (No.13 Allore Haulage) erased King's lead. Hennessy restarted in third.
Two laps after the restart, Hennessy drove underneath King for the lead and never looked back. Ryan Scott (No.33 J&J Automotive) presented himself as Hennessy's biggest challenger stealing second on lap nine. A couple of mid-race cautions gave Scott his best chance at the lead, but Hennessy was rock solid on the bottom and cruised to victory lane.
Scott finished second while Warren Mowat (No.46 Cormier's Auto Recycling) drove a consistent race to a third-place finish. Jason Curlette (No.77 Quinte West Swap & Sell) and Derrick Greig (No.48 Jim Rowe Drywall) completed the top-five.
Scott, Hennessy, and Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) were the Deerhaven Farm and Garden heat race winners.
Ramsay wins second Pro Stock feature
After Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt's Bobcat Service) dominated May, Justin Ramsay is off to a good start in June. Ramsay led the final 11 laps of the Brighton Automotive Pro Stock main event for his second win of the season.
Jay O'Hara (No.83 1st Guaranty Collision) was the early race leader after starting second. His lead was erased on lap six when Devon Kippen (No.43 Nate's Auto Cosmedix) spun in turn two. Anderson restarted 11th.
That gave Ramsay his chance at the point. O'Hara withstood the challenge for three laps until Ramsay successfully completed the pass on lap nine.
By lap 15, Anderson was up to second, but Ramsay led by a full straightaway. However, Ramsay would relive the nightmare that has haunted for three straight weeks as a lap 18 caution evaporated his lead.
The green-white-checkered finish saw Ramsay and Anderson go door-to-door, but Ramsay prevailed on the bottom lane. The hard charger award went to Anderson, who drove from 11th to 2nd.
Anderson and Wade Purchase (No.53 Paul Turner Auto Repair) won the Vanderlaan qualifying heats.
Greer brothers sweep round two of Comp 4 Triple Crown
The Bill's Johns Comp 4 division has been one of the most exciting so far this season and round two of the ABC Taxi Triple Crown was no different Saturday night. Courtney Mastin (No.97 Grosse Construction) led early in the race before Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating) overtook her on lap five.
After a caution on lap 10 for Terry Hough (No.32 The Vinyl Solution), Rich Sanders (No.29 Fowl Mood Racing) passed Greer to take over the lead on lap 14. But Sanders suffered a flat right-front tire on lap 18, which left the full straightaway lead to Greer.
Greer cruised to victory while his brother, Riley Greer (No.47 Clark's Automotive) raced to second. The Greer brothers finished in the top-two for the second week in a row. Riley won on May 31.
A scary incident on the final corner of the race saw heavy contact between Hough and Mastin when the No.97 got sideways in turn four. Mastin made direct contact with the side of Hough, sending the No.32 in to the outside wall. Bella Cosstick (No.24 Active Wealth Management) suffered heavy damage as well, while Cole Sandercock (No.09) was also involved. Mastin was shaken by the incident, but responded to EMS on the scene and was able to walk away on her own.
Riley and Brady Greer won the qualifying heats as well.
MacGregor completes Stinger hat-trick
For the third time in as many races, Del MacGregor (No.19 R.Ward Construction) parked his Pontiac Grand Prix in Quinte Septic Stinger victory lane.
Early on, it looked as though Rich Phillips (No.7 Ontario Duct Cleaning) would be the car to beat as he stole the lead on lap seven from Chris Lammle (No.95).
But MacGregor came from his seventh starting position to take the lead from Phillips with less than five to go for his third victory of the season.
Gary Taylor (No.89) was the hard-charger, coming from 13th to finish fifth.
Phillips and Geoff York (No.3 Patterson Auto Parts) won the qualifying heats.

The SOS return for their second visit of the 2014 season. The high-powered 360 sprint cars were 23-strong in their season opener on May 17. Mitch Brown (No.10 Haldex) of Caledonia, Ont. scored the featured race win on a tacky track. The track has since slicked off with dry weather and should provide excellent conditions for sprint car racing next Saturday.
A full card of stock car racing will also be on hand, including the second round of the Larry's Towing Triple Crown for the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks. The Vanderlaan Pro Late Models, OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modified, and Bill's Johns Comp 4s will also be on hand.
