Brown Claims SOS Opener; Baldwin, Anderson, Flieler Also Winners At Brighton

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON – May 22, 2016 – A full grandstand witnessed a night of firsts as all four divisions saw drivers earn their first wins of the season Saturday night at Brighton Speedway. A total of 69 cars were signed in for the night’s action presented by Mix 97 and NOCO Fuels, including 18 Sprint Cars for the Southern Ontario Sprints season opener.

Brown Wins SOS Opener For Third-Straight Season

Mitch Brown (No.10 Haldex Brakes) held the pole for the Southern Ontario Sprints 2016 season opener presented by Sanderson Tire and Automotive and led all 25 laps to win the travelling series’ season kickoff for the third straight year.

Despite his pole starting position, the Brantford, Ont. native was challenged throughout the race by Tecumseh, MI driver Dain Naida (No.17x Townline Variety), who darted past second-starting Rick Wilson (No.42w FK Rod Ends) of Joyceville, Ont. on lap three.

The race ran green until rookie driver Dylan Westbrook (No.47x Ohsweken Speedway) spun in turn four. Westbrook was making his first career start at Brighton. On the ensuing restart, Naida gave Brown his best, but it wasn’t strong enough to pull even or pass the 23-year-old ace.

Brown’s lead grew to nearly a full straightaway on lap 16, the same lap of the final caution as Kyle Fraser (No.01 Oakridge Construction) suffered a broken front end after contact on the front straightaway. The final restart gave Naida his best chance at the lead, but Brown was flawless over the final nine circuits to claim his first win of the season. Naida, Wilson, Glenn Styres (No.0 Case IH) and Ryan Turner (No.91 Insta-Panels) completed the top-five.

Baldwin Shakes The Monkey For Pro Late Model Win

Steve Baldwin (No.5 Pro Advantage Sports & Hobbies) finally shook the monkey off his back to earn his first win since 2014 in round one of the Hotch’s Auto Parts Triple Crown for the Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models.

The win came in spectacular fashion as Baldwin reeled in leader Brandon Mowat (No.46 Target Fabrication) in traffic with six laps to go. The fifth-starting Mowat took the lead from polesitter Terry Hunt (No.20 Krown Rust Control) on lap four and hit cruise control for the next 24 laps.

After Mowat claimed the point, Baldwin wasted little time grabbing the runner-up spot and set out to track down Mowat. However, Mowat’s lead grew to a full straightaway before he was stuck behind a group of five lapped cars.

The traffic erased the lead and gave Baldwin the chance to plot his move for the win. Baldwin jumped at his chance in turn four on lap 29, dicing between a pair of lapped cars to drive around Mowat’s outside. Once both cars escaped the flurry of activity, Baldwin held off a determined Mowat for his first win since August 31, 2014. Adam Turner (No.92 Village Variety) claimed his second straight podium finish with a third-place run while Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) and Phil Potts (No.29 Brighton Recycling) rounded out the top-five.

Anderson Claims Pro Stock Win

Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Bobcat Service) claimed his first victory of the season on Saturday night, outdueling sixth-place starter Leslie Mowat (No.2 Tri-County Plastics) and defending champion Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) to claim the victory in Brighton Automotive Pro Stock action.

The initial green flag produced a three-wide battle for the lead between the polesitter Ryan Connor (No.13 White’s Snow Plow), Rich Sanders (No.29 Orange Motorsports) and Mowat. Connor relinquished the lead to Mowat before the first caution on lap 3 when Sanders was turned to the infield after contact with Cory White (No.91 Hoosier).

Anderson used the restart to push himself to the front of the field and began to battle Mowat for the top position. The two battled side-by-side for five laps before Anderson eventually gathered enough momentum to take the lead exiting turn two.

Anderson, a Trenton native, had to withstand the final restart of the night on lap nine with Ramsay on his back bumper. The ‘Big Smooth’ was just that, however, and cruised to his first victory of the season ahead of Ramsay, Jonah Mutton (No.39 NOCO Fuels), Mowat and Mike Freeman (No.51 Boyer Chevrolet).

Flieler Claims Comp 4 Victory

After a two-year absence from Comp 4 competition, it took Adam Flieler just three races to park his No.11 Double D Sports Bar & Grill car in victory lane. The Trenton, Ont. driver caught Josh Read (No.04 Down To Earth Landscaping) on lap eight and completed the pass for the lead one lap later and never looked back on his way to victory in the 15-lap Bill’s Johns Comp 4 main.

Luke Toms (No.19 Diamond Detailing) led early after starting on the pole, but Read quickly relegated Toms to second on lap three as Flieler drove to third.

Five laps later, Flieler caught the race leader while racing in traffic. The two engaged in a hard wheel-to-wheel battle over the next two laps before Flieler assumed control of the field. Flieler set out to complete the final six laps uncontested, but a red flag at lap 11 halted his effort.

Luke Toms appeared to catch an implement tire in turn four. The contact upset the car and sent Toms flipping wildly before his No.19 came to a rest on its side to draw the red conditions. Toms walked away from the vehicle uninjured under his own power.

Following the restart, Flieler had to withstand a hard challenge from rookie Matthew Moore (No.14 Farl’s Auto Body) down the backstretch with two laps to go before taking the checkered flag. Moore earned the runner-up spot at the checkers in a drag race with Read, who settled for third. Jeremy Toms (No.10 Diamond Detailing) and Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) completed the top-five.
