The surface is really hard on mini-truck parts and pieces, two years in a row we have had guys have parts fail causing big wrecks, once at the start of a feature, and last year on the last corner of the last lap. I'd love the place to death if it there weren't so many seams in the pavement. Diving into turn three through the bumps is fun though!

You gotta wonder how much one of those, functioning with all the stuff needed to operate it, would cost, even at a used rate. (versus a coat of asphalt lol jk)

LOL i was thinking the same thing . I do like that little track it reminds of some of the tracks around Ontario back in the day with its atmosphere but it sure could use a coat of asphalt .

Very funny jcrash but Varney has allot of things going for it . It may have the highest banks of any track in Ontario and it has great concession food at very good prices .  Its also very old school and rubbin is still racin there . Not too many years ago i remember seeing two drivers wives get into it and one of them was a pretty hot farm girl (you got to like that) Going a little further back i remember two drivers getting into it on the track and one of their crew members pouring gas all over the other guys hauler and going to torch it before they stopped him , now thats real passion   ;D Until you have had to fight your way out of a short track you really haven't done any racing . You guys are use to going to the officials and making a protest , i remember when protests were made with a good right hook .  We didn't have to wait until the track made a decision on Tuesday after the race everything got settled right then and there .

YA YA  I know those days are over , thats why they let women , little kids and dogs in the pits now . .....too bad.

That was the night the Flamboro Challenger club was at Varney. The  Nagy / Velenosi feud got alittle carried away that nite. In fact back in Hamilton the next week, The Nagy's returned to their car lot to find 20 or so flat tires. Never found the person.
The one season when I first started racing an had no clue about changing stuff, I ran the whole season with drum brakes on the front. The last half of every feature I was having to pump the pedal 3 times just to get something when I hit the corners. I was actually leading the points for awhile till I blew 2 trannies in 2 weeks and blew a brake line another. Finished 6th at the end.
The funniest was when there would be a caution, the corner track workers would be there and the "home town guys" would pull up and they would ask if their fender and tire were ok. They would yell it was ok and even pull on the fender to clear the tire. Us "out of towners" they would look at us and just shrug....lolol. Tom Donnelly was running the track then, super nice guy, always thanked everyone for coming. The second nite he came over and couldn't believe I drove from Hamilton to race there , so he would always give me a $20 gas voucher everyweek in my payoff for towing there each week.
I had $500 bucks in that car, raced Flamboro Saturday nights, towed to Varney on Sunday afternoons, all by myself, no crew and actually made money racing for 2 years. Some of my most fun racing.

I made my first trip to Varney for an endurance race in 1986 and liked it enough to call it home for the next 20 years.Saw a lot of changes, different promoters, got some championships, got married on the track in '91 and ran in most regular classes that have been there since my first time there.
I agree that Tom Donnelly was a nice guy and great promoter,a real people person and knew how to keep the racing affordable.
The years have taken it's toll on the track surface which is mostly original from 1970 with the exception of most of turn 1-2 and the widening of the front and back straightaways but if it was repaved or reconfigured it just would't be the same.
I have been to a lot of tracks around Ontario and have never seen one that could equal the "one big family" atmosphere that Varney speedway has in the pits.I also don't remember a track that had a lower admission price for the grandstands.
If you haven't been there give it a try if you can,I think you'll like it.

I'm not familiar with the pit atmosphere at Varney, but I'd say that Grand Bend could be a challenger for the "one big family" atmosphere. I can't remember the last time I saw someone wreck at GBS, and not have at least 12 people offer some kind of help, from several divisions.

I was going to say, but the last post was getting long, that last year taking my daughter to race her mini stock at Grandbend on a Sunday afternoon a couple of weekends, after Saturday nite racing Flamboro, sure reminded me of those days. Grandbend is a great little track, wish it was oval myself, but we all have to race the same shape. Love the atomosphere and the fact everyone sits in the same grandstand makes it great for families. Hope to make somemore Sundays there this year, but nothing beats the fans doing the "Varney Shuffle" and meeting a new friend! LOL.

They use to have an announcer that was very funny, one woman told me see didnt much like the racing, but he was worth the admission.  And when the place was getting packed he would ask the fans to slide over in their seats to make room for people still coming in "the Varney Shuffle" and "you might meet a new friend".

my guess is that you would be refering to either Chris Dawson or Ron Kirby
