Jay Doerr Leads Team to Pair of Solid Results

(London, ON) –Jay Doerr and his Lucas Oil / Once Upon a Child Chevrolet Impala unloaded at Delaware Speedway, Friday August 17th for the next event on the famous ½-mile.  The team was still looking for a finish that matched the speed of the car in the 2012 season.

In heat race competition, Jay started on the inside of the second row and after a long battled claimed a second-place finish with a pass eight laps into the 10-lap affair.

Doerr rolled from the 13th starting position in the feature, but found himself at the back of the field as his line slowed up on the initial green flag.  There was a 25-lap run to open the race and the #43 machine helped guide Jay through traffic, as he cracked the top-ten on lap 25.  A few laps later, a large incident would force a number of drivers to the back and Jay was able to navigate through it, and wound up sixth.

He gained one more spot during the remainder of the event to post his first top-five finish of the season at Delaware.  “It was nice to finally have to go to tech after a feature,” explained Doerr.  “We ended up keeping air in all the tires for a change, and the car was working well throughout the night.  We also wanted to go to Flamboro Speedway on Monday, so the car was in good shape, and we had a little momentium.”

Kirk Hooker took the lead early and paced the field for the rest of the event, with Mark Watson holding off Andrew Gresel for second.

One of the biggest Pro Late Model events in the province was run Monday August 20th at Flamboro Speedway, just outside of Hamilton.  The Gold Rush 100 featured NASCAR driver and commentator Kenny Wallace, and 28 other top drivers in Ontario were racing for $5,000 to win, with an additional $5,000 bonus to be available to one another driver.

The qualifying run didn’t go as planned, and Doerr timed in 18th.

This would force Jay to run the B-Feature, and it was an opportunity to fine tune the chassis before the main event.  On the start and the first restart, Jay had to fall into second position, but on lap seven he made a move on the leader, walking away to a win to easily advance to the main event.

Doerr started 17th in the 100-lap affair and started to move up early.  The caution filled affair saw Jay climb into the top-ten well before the halfway point.  During the second half of the race he raced his way into the top-five with Steve Lyons and Kenny Wallace for position before finishing losing some spots in a late race shuffle to finish eighth.  “We were able to go to the outside and make some passes tonight, which is good, but the car was super tight tonight.  We didn’t think the track was going to tighten up that much and a lot of times I had to drive it right on the apron to try and make the car turn.”
Jason Shaw qualified second and took the Gold Rush Challenge, starting shotgun on the field.  Paul Howse, and Steve Laking traded the lead at the front of the pack before Howse was forced to hold off Shaw in the closing laps to claim the win, while NASCAR personality and driver Kenny Wallace took the bronze medal.

The next event for Doerr Motorsports and his Lucas Oil crew will be Labour Day weekend for The Great Canadian 200, the biggest event of the season at Delaware for the Late Models.  Doerr is pumped for the race, “I like long races, and we’ve run well in the past, finishing fourth a in 2010.”
