Memorial Caps Off Double Header At Varney

This past holiday long weekend finally delivered in the weather department as two nights of back-to-back racing were capped off with the annual Rick Woolner Memorial for the high-powered All Pro Modifieds. Honouring the Varney Speedway great, it was only appropriate that John Woolner, the son of the late Rick Woolner; who's passing reaches the ten year mark later this month; would drop the green flag on a hungry pack of the fastest field of cars running regularly at the high-banked 1/4 mile oval.

From the pole position, #12 Justin McLellan brought the pack to the green with #2 Dale McArthur right along side. McLellan would win the race out of turn two and take the lead early. On lap two, McArthur would loose traction coming off the fourth turn almost collecting #8 Gary McLean on the front stretch. McLean would squeeze by McArthur but, exiting turn two on the same lap, McArthur would loose grip again only this time #4 Aaron McLean would get into the back bumper sending McArthur spinning to the infield grass and bringing out the first caution flag of the race.

On the restart, McLellan took the lead once again but, the yellow would come out almost immediately for desbris on the race track. Unfortunately, the caution flag flew after McLellan ran over the desbris flattening his right front tire and sending the race leader to the pits for repairs. McLellan would return for the restart lining up at the rear of the filed. Gary McLean took the green flag as the new race leader and would never look back. Driving the very same car that Rick Woolner had driven into victory lane so many times, Gary McLean took the checkered flag in this prestigous memorial tribute. Staying close to the leader for most of the race, #4 Aaron McLean hung on for second. McLellan recovered to salvage a third place finish while #1 Ted Patterson had a solid run edging McArthur in the closing laps to take the fourth spot. Mcarthur was fifth. Gary McLean also won both of the heat races earlier in the night.

In other action this weekend, #51 Clark Hartman wound up in victory lane in Saturday's Stock 4 feature race. Hartman took the white flag running fourth but, battling for the lead heading into the final turn, the top three cars of #12 Jacob Robb, #9 Tessa Cremasco and #75 Scott Mast crashed heading into the third turn. Hartman was able to weave through the carnage to take the checkered flag. Sunday night's Stock 4 feature race saw #35 Tim Tolton hold off a race-long charge from #09 Britton Lundy to cap off a three-win sweep on the night. Saturday night's heat races were won by #12 Jacob Robb, #09 Britton Lundy, #9 Tessa Cremasco and # 35 Tim Tolton. Sunday's heat race were won by Tolton (X2), Lundy and #38 Sherry Smart.

Back to his winning ways, #93 Bill Cole swept the features both nights in the Street Stock division. Once again, #99 Jamie Hunt was able to run with Cole but could not get around the Hanover driver as Hunt was forced to settle for back-to-back second place finishes. Saturday night's heat races were won by #48 Mike Wilson and Cole. Sunday's heats were won by #3 Jamie Jarvis and Cole..

In Sunday's Super Street Stock feature, #83 Scott Way cruised to an easy flag-to-flag win but the story of the weekend was the 'comeback' win in Saturday night's feature race. After what appeared to be a season ending crash last Saturday night, #27 Mark Fenton showed up in time for the drop of the first green flag and, after working out some handling details took his car; which was patched together using a variety of spare parts lying around his shop as well as random pieces of sheet metal; into victory lane! Heat races on the weekend were won by #77 Rob Brown and Fenton on Saturday night, and Way and Fenton on Sunday night.

After two 'off' weeks for the T.W. Robarts Photos Late Model points leader, #18 Jason McLellan found victory lane once again and got back to his winning ways after sweeping the feature races on both Saturday and Sunday nights. McLellan was only passed once all weekend. Taking advantage of some quick reflexes, #19 Brian Wilson was able to get a jump on McLellan on a restart Saturday night but, McLellan would take the top spot back before the two came back across the start-finish line. After winning six of the first eight features this season; including five in a row, McLellan is starting a new streak currently standing at two in a row. Heat races this weekend were won by #19 Brian Wilson and #96 Monty Kelly on Saturday and McLellan and Wilson on Sunday.

The action on the high banks this past weekend was; by far; the most exciting so far this season. All of Saturday's feature races were decided on the final lap with a few coming right down to the line in side-by-side battles, swapping paint for the victory. The trains electrified the standing-room-only crowd on both nights with The Pain Train picking up the win Saturday and The Markdale Salvage Crushers on Sunday. While most of the 'wheels' stayed on the track, two sets left the speedway this weekend as Michael Fleet (4 yrs. old) of Palmerston and Alex Williams (6 yrs. old) of Fergus won brand new bicycles as part of Varney Motor Speedway's Kid's Club draws.

This coming weekend, the Pro 4 Modifieds make their second appearance this season at Varney. Four weeks ago, the Pro 4's ran the high banks for the first time ever turning laps almost as quick as their 8-cylinder counterparts.
